Low temperature significantly influences chloroplast development and chlorophyll (Chl) biosynthesis, so effect of coldness on Chl content and Chl fluorescence characteristics was investigated in C. bungeana (Chorispora bungeana Fisch. & C.A. Mey). The levels of transcript and protein of an enzymatic step during Chl biosynthesis in response to chilling (4°C) and freezing (-4°C) were also examined in this work. Significant reduction in total Chl content was observed, but the reduction was much less at 4°C than that at -4°C. Moreover, the maximal quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry, indicated by Fv/Fm, decreased in the first 12 h, but then started to increase and reached higher levels than the control at 24 h and 48 h at 4°C, but decreased continuously at -4°C. Whereas quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) showed no significant difference between the chilling-stressed and the control seedlings, at -4°C, ΦPSII was markedly reduced with the prolonged treatment. In general, there were no significant responses of photochemical quenching (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) to cold treatment. Meanwhile, the full-length cDNA of NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (POR, EC 1.3.1.33) was isolated and termed CbPORB (GenBank Accession No. FJ390503). Its transcript and protein content only slightly declined at 4°C, but dramatically reduced at -4°C with the time. These results strongly suggest that CbPORB possesses certain resistant characteristics and is a major player in Chl biosynthesis process involved in plant growth and development of C. bungeana under cold environmental conditions. and Y. The negative affective state of opiate abstinence plays an important role in craving and relapse to compulsive drug use. The dopamine system participates in the reward effects of opiate use and the aversive effect of opiate abstinence. The amygdala is an essential neural substrate for associative learning of emotion. To establish a model of conditioned place aversion (CPA) in morphine-treated rats, we used different visual and tactual cues as conditioned stimuli (CS) within a conditioning apparatus. An injection of naloxone served as the unconditioned stimulus (US). The 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion technique was used to investigate the effects of the dopaminergic system of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) on naloxone-induced CPA. Rats were rendered physically dependent via administration of increasing doses of morphine delivered via intraperitoneal injection. Doses increased by 20 % each day for 14 days, starting from an initial dose of 6 mg/kg. All rats also received a low dose of naloxone (0.1 mg/kg) by injection 4 hours after morphine treatment on days 11 and 13 to induce CPA in a biased twocompartment conditioned place apparatus. Morphine-dependent rats with sham lesions were found to develop significant CPA after naloxone treatment. Bilateral 6-OHDA lesions of the CeA impaired the acquisition of CPA but had no effect on locomotor activity. In order to evaluate the combined effects of simulated acid rain (SAR) and salinity on the physiological responses of macroalgae, Ulva prolifera was cultured under three salinity treatments (5, 10,
25‰) and at different pH, i.e., at pH 4.4 (C), pH 4.4(F), where the pH of the culture increased from 4.4 to approximately 7.8 during the cultivation period, or in absence of SAR at pH 8.2(C), at 100 μmol(photon) m-2 s-1 and 20°C. Compared to 25‰ salinity, Relative growth rate (RGR) of U. prolifera was enhanced by 10‰ salinity, but decreased by 5‰ salinity. No significant differences in RGR were observed between the pH 8.2(C) and pH 4.4(F) treatments, but the chlorophyll a content was reduced by SAR. Negative effects of SAR on the photosynthesis were observed, especially under low salinity treatments.
