The following caryophyllidean tapeworms were found in freshwater fishes from Japan (species reported from Japan for the first time marked with an asterisk): family Caryophyllaeidae: Paracaryophyllaeus gotoi (Motomura, 1927) from Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Cantor); Archigetes sieboldi Leuckart, 1878 from Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck et Schlegel) and Sarcocheilichthys variegatus microoculus Mori (new hosts); family Lytocestidae: *Caryophyllaeides ergensi Scholz, 1990 from Tribolodon hakuensis (Günther), T. ezoe Okada et Ikeda, Hemibarbus barbus (Temminck et Schlegel) and Chaenogobius sp. (new hosts); Khawia japonensis (Yamaguti, 1934) from Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus; K. sinensis Hsü, 1935 from H. barbus (new host) and C. carpio; *K. parva (Zmeev, 1936) from Carassius auratus langsdorfii Valenciennes in Cuvier et Valenciennes and Carassius sp. (new hosts); and *Atractolytocestus sagittatus (Kulakovskaya et Akhmerov, 1962) from C. carpio; family Capingentidae: *Breviscolex orientalis Kulakovskaya, 1962 from H. barbus (new host); and Caryophyllidea gen. sp. (probably Breviscolex orientalis) from C. carpio. The validity of C. ergensi, originally described from Leuciscus leuciscus baicalensis from Mongolia, is confirmed on the basis of an evaluation of extensive material from Japan. Atractolytocestus sagittatus (syn. Markevitschia sagittata) is tentatively considered a valid species, differing from the only congener, A. huronensis Anthony, 1958, in its considerably greater number of testes.
Eight species of fishes from rivers of Northern Portugal were examined for cestodes but only one, Barbus barbus bocagei (Steindachner), was infected: river Este (4 of 12 infected, 1,1,4 adult and 37 juvenile cestodes found respectively), Lima (1 of 8 infected, 1 juvenile cestode), Paiva (1 of 5 infected, 57 juvenile cestodes) and Sousa (1 of 13 infected, 1 adult cestode). The cestodes were Caryophyllidea. The fan-shaped scolex had very shallow incisions, with the scolex separated from the hindbody by a neck. The first vitelline follicles started a considerable distance anterior to the testes, with some vitelline follicles along the lateral margins of the cirrus sac, uterine coils and H-shaped ovary. The uterine coils extended forward to the posterior half of the cirrus sac. Transverse transmission electron microscope sections showed cortical vitelline follicles and medullary testes validating Lytocestidae. These features identify Khawia baltica Szidat, 1941, described from tench Tinca tinca (L.) in East Prussia and subsequently reported from barbel B. barbus and T. tinea in Russia, This is a new host and first record from Portugal and western Europe, thus extending the known range of distribution of K. baltica.
Spermiogenesis and ultrastructure of mature spermatozoon of the caryophyllidean cestode Hunterella nodulosa, a parasite of suckers (Catostomidae), have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. This monozoic tapeworm is unique in its mode of attachment and represents the second North American species studied. The process of spermiogenesis of H. nodulosa follows the general pattern already described in other caryophyllideans. The most characteristic feature is the presence of a slight rotation of the flagellar bud, which seems to be a typical character of spermiogenesis in this cestode group. The mature spermatozoon of H. nodulosa is characterized by the presence of one axoneme of 9 + ''1'' type of the trepaxonematan flatworms surrounded by a semi-arc of cortical microtubules in its anterior extremity, parallel nucleus and cortical microtubules arranged in a parallel pattern, which corresponds to the Type III pattern of cestode spermatozoa according to Levron et al. (2010). Comparison of the present data with those available for other caryophyllideans did not reveal substantial differences, even though they belong to different families, infect different hosts (catostomid, cyprinid and siluriform fishes) and occur in distant zoogeographical regions. This indicates uniformity of the process of sperm formation and spermatozoon ultrastructure in one of the evolutionarily most ancient groups of tapeworms.
