Cixiid planthoppers have been shown to vector phloem-limited prokaryotes associated with plant diseases world-wide. In eastern France, an emerging disease of sugar beet called syndrome "basses richesses" has been associated with phloem-restricted bacteria transmitted by a cixiid planthopper within the genus Pentastiridius. Early investigation suggested the species being Pentastiridius beieri. On the basis of a morphological and phylogenetic study we report the identification of the planthopper as Pentastiridius leporinus. Furthermore we report some biological traits of the species, which shows a surprising ecological adaptation to an annual cropping rotation sugar beet-winter cereals.
First descriptions of males of Peltonotellus raniformis (Mulsant & Rey, 1855), P. melichari Horváth, 1897 and Ordalonema faciepilosa Dlabola, 1980 are given. In addition, identification keys to the eight Caliscelidae genera of the Western Palaearctic and to the five Peltonotellus Puton, 1886 species of Europe are presented.
The planthopper genus Pseudoparicana Melichar, 1914 is revised. Three previously known species, P. curvifera (Distant, 1907), P. sanguinifrons Muir, 1931 and P. tepida Melichar, 1914 are re-described and P. analoga Wang & Malenovský sp. n. is described as new. Lectotypes are designated for P. curvifera and P. tepida. An identification key and illustrations of diagnostic characters, including male and female genitalia, are provided for all taxa and the systematic position of this genus and the asymmetry of the genitalia of the species are briefly discussed. Two new species (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha, Cixiidae) included in a new genus, Meenocixius gen. n., and associated with Acanthophœnix rubra (Bory) H. Wendl. (Arecaceae) are described from the island of La Réunion: M. bebourensis sp. n. and M. virescens sp. n. This genus shows several autapomorphies in its tegmina venation, very particular within the Fulgoromorpha. Borbonomyndus gen. n., is proposed for another new species, B. pandanicola sp. n. associated with Pandanus purpurascens Thouars (Pandanaceae), and B. pallidus (Synave), previously described as a member of the genus Eumyndus Synave. According to morphological and ethological data, E. bistriatus is synonymized with B. pallidus, of which three different forms are recognized. All species of Borbonomyndus are found associated with Pandanus. These two new genera are endemic to La Réunion. Without taxonomic standing, the subspecies of Brixia belouvensis are synonymyzed and restricted to four different forms. A key is proposed for the Cixiidae of La Réunion, which now includes 12 species belonging to 6 different genera: Achaemenes, Aselgeoides, Brixia, Oliarus (but we show that the species placed in this genus need to be reviewed), Borbonomyndus, and Meenocixius. Monophyly of Eumyndus, from which E. perinetensis Synave is excluded, is substantiated. Following the new interpretation, this genus is now restricted to Madagascar. The species Cubana insularis Muir, from the island of Rodrigues, is transferred to a new genus: Achaebana gen. n. Finally, cixiid endemism and their host-plant associations in the Mascarenes are discussed.
Three new genera containing five new species of Lophopidae are described: Maana colorata, Maana erythina, Maana oriomoensis, Podoschtroumpfa magna and Pseudotyxis malimoenensis. A new key to the genera of Lophopidae is also provided, followed by a cheklist of the distribution of the genera and their host plants.
