3. Comparisons of grace and GLDAS derived hydrological loading and the impacts on the GPS time series in Europe

The surface displacement caused by hydrological loading makes an important contribution to the non-linear crustal movement observed at the International Global Navigation Satellite System Service (IGS) stations. In this paper, the amplitude, correlation, and root mean square (RMS) of the vertical displacement time series signals of 47 IGS stations are used to analyze which data of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) or Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) can better reflect the hydrological load effect in Europe. The results show that in Europe, the hydrological load effect calculated based on GRACE data is more accurate than that of GLDAS, which has not been reported before. Then, the relationship between the GPS height and GRACE load deformation in terms of annually-oscillating signals, correlation, and phase is analyzed by using singular spectrum analysis, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and wavelet coherence (WTC). It was found that GPS and GRACE agree at some stations (e.g., BOR1 and ZIMM), while they differ significantly in amplitude and phase at other stations (e.g., KIRU and NOT1), indicating that not all GRACE-derived displacements of IGS stations can clearly explain their nonlinear motion. and The correlation coefficients between GPS and GRACE are higher than 0.7 at 85 % of stations. Amongst them, the values are obviously greater than 0.8 (e.g., ZIMM and LAMA) around inland areas and high mountains, and even less than 0.6 (e.g., ANKR and KIRU) along the coast of the Mediterranean ocean, which more precisely shows that the hydrological load effect has obvious spatial and regional characteristics compared with previous studies. In addition, the relative phase of the WTC solution is basically consistent under non-detrend and detrend, which shows that the relative phase difference of each station is only related to the nonlinear movement and not to the linear trend caused by the tectonic deformation. Finally, we study the influence of GRACE hydrological load on the RMS of GPS height, which is reduced by 24.60 % on average, and the reduction rate distribution of the RMS is in good agreement with the spatial distribution of the correlation coefficient.

The use of livestock guarding dogs (LGDs) has been widely advocated as a responsible tool for reducing livestock predation and conserving wildlife. However, their hidden ecological costs have rarely been investigated. We analysed scats (n = 183) from six LGDs and visited Global Positioning System (GPS) location clusters (n = 352) from nine GPS-collared LGDs to reconstruct their diet and assess impacts on wildlife and livestock in Namaqualand, South Africa. Wild mammals, including 10 native species, and small-livestock were the main secondary foods (i.e. besides dog food pellets). A total of 90% of scats and one third of GPS clusters investigated had associated animal remains. When accompanied by a human attendant, fewer LGD scats contained animal matter (39.9%; of which 32.3% wild mammals and 4.6% livestock), in contrast to scats of LGDs on their own (93.2%; 14.4% wild mammals, 75.4% livestock). Similarly, few clusters of accompanied LGDs included animal remains (5.7%; of which 43.8% wild mammals and 31.3% livestock), whereas unaccompanied dogs clustered frequently at carcasses (92.4%; 16% wild mammals, 74% livestock). While sample sizes were relatively small and some dogs might have scavenged, we emphasize the importance of rigorous training and intensive monitoring of LGDs to correct unwanted predation behaviour and to maximize their ecological and protective benefits.

5. Monitoring of the ground deformation in Penang Island, Malaysia using permanent scatterer interferometry synthetic aperture radar (PS-INSAR) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) techniques

Ground deformations (e.g., landslide and subsidence) have substantially risen recently around Penang Island, Malaysia. The development of hillslopes for rapid urbanisation and heavy rainfall has detrimental impacts on Penang Island soil layers. Modelling, simulation, and the development of susceptibility maps were past methods used to predict potential ground deformations of Penang Island. There is no published work on the Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique, where ground deformation of the region has been holistically studied. This work integrates the Persistent Scatterer InSAR (PS-InSAR) technique with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to monitor the deformation on the island and identify possible subsurface causes for the disturbance. Twenty-four descending Sentinel-1A datasets acquired between 14th July 2017 and 13th October 2018 were processed to monitor and map ground deformation areas with a focus on three selected regions- Batu Feringghi (BF), Paya Terubong (PT), and Tanjung Bungah (TB), where multiple landslides occurred between 2017 and 2018. InSAR results were later analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) tool and validated by the available Global Positioning System (GPS) analysis. InSAR analyses reveal the mean deformation values of -3.13 mm/yr, -2.76 mm/yr and -4.77 mm/yr for the BF, PT, and TB areas. GPR surveys were conducted with a 300/800 MHz dual-frequency antenna at the three selected study areas. The article presents a new rnethodology concerning the GPS signals Processing and shows the signál pre-processing the influence on the quality of the prediction error. The next paraineter, which qualified the model quality, is exponential forgetting. For slowly tinie dependent models the exponential forgetting is approximately 0.98 - 0.99. The lower forgetting value points out the time varying model which is not usable for our modelling application. At the end of the article we achieved model for GPS signals with the appropriate prediction errors and with adequate exponential forgetting. AU theoretical results are practically applied on reál GPS signals and the achieved accuracy is much better according to the raw measured data.

The paper is focused to the analysis of permanent and epoch-wise GPS networks extending over the region of Slovakia. We considered almost all available GPS data measured in Slovakia and its close surroundings over the period of last 17 years. Our analysis is based on combination of homogenized permanent and epoch-wise network solutions leading to the ITRF2005 related coordinates, velocities and their global covariance matrix. Estimated velocities were further reduced for APKIM2005d plate motion model and submitted to the velocity filtering and smoothing using the least square collocation approach. The obtained homogenized intra-plate velocity field is then used for the surface deformation analysis.
