Description:

The article seeks to analyze the role of King Ramkhamheng of Sukhothai as a type of ideal ruler in Thai history and historiography. It first briefly describes Ramkhamhengs’s rule, with an emphasis on the qualities, virtues and deeds of the king, as outlined by the so-called Ramkhamheng Stele. The second part of the article focuses on the impact this ideal of kingship and leadership has had on modern Thai politics, as illustrated by the example of the Thai Prime Minister Sarit Thanarat.
