- Description:
- The establishment of a special international tribunal to prosecute the surviving leaders of the Cambodian Khmer Rouge regime is a result of a long, complicated process. Supported by the UN and the international community, the tribunal had finally started its work in 2006, after years of negotiations between Cambodia and the United Nations. With five Khmer Rouge already detained and investigated, the victims of the Pol Pot dictatorship finally have some hope of seeing justice being done after three decades of waiting. Although the advanced age and poor health of most of the defendants give the expected prison sentences more of a symbolic than real meaning, it is precisely this symbolic meaning that can provide the ultimate conclusion to one of the most troubled and tragic periods of Cambodian history.
