Leaf stomatal density (SD), net photosynthetic rates (PN), and stomatal conductance (gs) of Hordeum vulgare and Pisum sativum cultivars in Himalaya increased with altitude. Higher PN and leaf temperature under low CO2 partial pressure at high altitudes could evoke a higher gs and SD to allow sufficient influx of CO2 as well as more efficient leaf cooling through transpiration. and S. Paranaella, a new microcotyline monotypie genus, is erected to accommodate Paranaella luquei sp. n., parasite of gill filaments from Hypostomus sp., Hypostomus regani (Ihering) and Rhinelepis aspera Spix et Agassiz (Loricariidae) from the Paraná River, Brazil. The new genus is most closely related to Microcolyle Van Beneden et Hesse, 1863, Diploslamenides Unnithan, 1971 and Solostamenides Unnithan, 1971. From Microcolyle it differs mainly by having the genital atrium formed by a muscular ring with a concentric row of numerous elongate and straight spines; from Diplostamenides it can be distinguished by the unarmed and not differentiated cirrus and from Solostamenides it differs by the single vaginal pore and absence of larval hooks.
Trichodina kamchatika Konovalov, Shevlyakov et Krasin, 1970 is redescribed based on specimens obtained from the gills and body surface of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) from Nova Scotia and Quebec, Canada and its taxonomic history briefly reviewed. This is the first report of T. kamchatika from North America.
Structural differences of microtriches and distal cytoplasm of the tegument in the apical and lateral suckers, scolex proper and neck of Proteocephalus macrocephalus (Creplin,1815) were studied. The microthrix border in the apical sucker is formed by filamentous microtriches only. The frontal and lateral parts of scolex bear mainly filamentous microtriches, but seldom short conoid types occur. The transitional zone between scolex and neck is covered mainly with short conoid microtriches. The neck bears blade-like microtriches. In the apical and lateral suckers, the basal plasma membrane of the distal cytoplasm adheres to the basal lamina at some points only, forming thus a lacunal system at the base of the sucker tegument. In the scolex proper and neck region, the basal plasma membrane of the tegument is connected continuously with the basal lamina. The distal cytoplasm is penetrated by two types of gland cell ducts and cibate sensory receptors. Possible functions of different parts of the microthrix border are discussed.
Subepidermal glands of the body of Troglocaridicola sp. (from the cavemicolous shrimp Troglocaris sp. in eastern Italy) were observed by transmission electron microscopy. The reservoir and duct of the glands arc lined with longitudinal microlubulcs. Membrane-bound granules inside the gland show a distinctive pattern: they contain fibres, 18 nm in diameter, regularly arranged in bundles with a 5 nm space between libres. From a survey of the available literature on glands of Platyhelminthes, it is concluded that this structure is known only in this species. Glands with regularly arranged 18 nm fibres, if characteristic for the Scutariellidae, could be considered an autapomorphy of this family, distinguishing it from other members of the Temnocephalida.
