Water availability is an important factor for plant growth in arid environments. In recent decades, vermicompost (VC) fertilizer has been used in agriculture as a safe and effective fertilizer with high water-holding capacity. The aim of the present study was to characterize effects of VC fertilizer on photosynthetic activity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. cv. Karaj) under drought conditions at three different growth stages. Tests were carried out with four volumetric ratios of VC to soil, i.e., 0:100, 10:90, 20:80, and 30:70, and three levels of drought stress, i.e., no stress (NS), moderate drought (MS), and severe drought (SS) (100, 75, and 25% of field capacity, respectively). Evaluations were performed at the seedling, flowering, and podding stage. We found that the VC treatment under NS conditions significantly increased total chlorophyll content [Chl (a+b)], intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) at all three stages. The VC addition of 10 and 20% significantly enhanced the Chl content and Fv/Fm under MS and Fv/Fm, C i, and P N under SS at the flowering stage. In conclusion, our results proved a positive effect of the VC fertilizer on photosynthesis of chickpea under NS conditions, but it was not found under MS and SS., S. R. Hosseinzadeh, H. Amiri, A. The Interkosmos satellite laser ranging system ar Borowiec is described. The system ranging precision has been evaluated. The calculations show the standard deviation associated with the observations to be in the range of ±75 cm. A brief discussion of the influence of the random errors upon calibrations and observations proper is given.
Photosynthesis and growth characteristics of Parthenocissus quinquefolia were measured under differing soil water availability within a pot. Decreased soil moisture significantly reduced the leaf relative water content (RWC) and the above- and below-ground biomass. However, more biomass was allocated to the root than to the leaf. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) were also significantly decreased but water use efficiency (WUE) was increased. Midday depressions in PN and gs were not evident for the well-irrigated plants. With the lower water availability, midday reductions in PN and gs were much more marked and the duration of the depression was longer. Additionally, the PN-irradiance response curves also indicated that water supply affected photosynthesis capacity. The growth and photosynthetic response of P. quinquefolia to water supply indicated that this species could resilient to water availabilities and adapt to Hunshandak conditions very well. and Z. J. Microsporidia are a group of obligate intracellular unicellular eukaryotes that can parasitize a wide variety of other eukaryotes ranging from protists to invertebrates and vertebrates. In this study, we examined the microsporidium Nosema sp. isolated from the mulberry pest, Hemerophila atrilineata Butler, 1881, named herein ''Nosema sp. HA''. The fresh spores were long oval in shape, 3.8 ± 0.4 μm in length and 1.9 ± 0.3 μm in width. Analysis of tissue infection of silkworm, Bombyx mori Linnaeus, 1758, indicated that the midgut, Malpighian tubules, muscle, fat body, silk glands, hemocytes, nerve tissue and gonads of silkworm were infected with Nosema sp. HA. The complete rRNA gene sequence of this microsporidium contained 4 305 base pairs (GenBank Accession JN882299), including the large subunit rRNA (2 492 bp), the internal transcribed spacer (187 bp), the small subunit rRNA (1 232 bp), the intergenic spacer (279 bp) and the 5S region (115 bp). The organization of the rRNA gene is 5'-LSU-ITS-SSU-IGS-5S-3'. Phylogenetic analysis, comparison of sequence identities and the arrangement in the rRNA gene subunits suggested that this isolate is separate from other Nosema species.
The ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPC) activity, protein content and net photosynthetic rate (P^) were estimated at monthly intervals from September 1990 to August 1991 in Chukrasia íabularis, Dolichandrom atrovirens, Eugenia jambolana, Gmelina arborea, Lamea coromandelica, Terminalia arjuna and Terminalia bellehca. The leaves of all these tree species showed significantly higher RuBPC activity during summer than in winter, when it was expressed on the basis of chlorophyll (Chl) content. RuBPC exhibited seasonal variations in its activity and these differed from one tree species to the other. When expressed on the basis of leaf area, the activity of RuBPC correlated with protein content, but not with P^.
