All sites in the “Oderská brána” Gate, Czech Silesia and North Moravia, a somewhat marginal region from the viewpoint of LBK occupation, are linked by an abundant occurrence of chipped industry, produced mainly from the chert of the Cracowian-Częstochowa Jurassic formation, the outcrops of which are 150 km distant. In spite of this remnants of cortex were ascertained on nearly one third of artefacts and cores are as numerous as formal tools. Because of a considerable distance from the source the sites with such composition of industry are usually considered to be secondary production centres. The discussion makes a reference to the fact that remnants of cortex could be left on the artefacts intentionally, since they testify to the provenance of the stone (either geographical or perhaps even below-ground). In addition to the distance from the source, intensity and manner of working with flint is determined by a number of other factors, for instance relaxation or competitiveness among knappers. The special liking for this activity in the remote Upper Oder enclave and evidence of fishing can be related to the Mesolithic traditions. Secondary production centres could only come into existence as a consequence of an increased demand for chipped industry; however this demand was often very low exactly in the settlements with the LBK.
Neočekávatelnost sledovaného fenomenu vede ke skeptickým úvahám o možnostech archeologické identifikace byť i masových aktivit transcendentálního významu, zejména pokud nezanechaly větší množství pozůstatků z nepomíjivých surovin. and Chipped industry appears rather rarely in the settlements and cemeteries of the Early Bronze Age. Among the most conspicuous types are glossy denticulated blades and triangular points, while alongside the preponderant small flakes cores are generally absent. The enormous extent of the extraction of Jurassic chert – redeposited in the Miocene sands of the Krumlovský les [Krumlov Forest], is somewhat more surprising. Over an area of several dozen hectares it is possible to trace filled–in extraction terraces and shafts, which may be up to 8 m deep. In contrast to the earlier (Late Lengyel) extraction, virtually all of the industry was leaved on the spot to a massive scale. Outside of mining fields, extensive workshops are known from the Únětice settlement at nearby Kubšice, which apparently served as a meeting place for miners and chippers. Chert and brightly coloured cherty breccia were worked here using unusual flat and discoid techniques unknown from settlements but with analogies from contemporary mining areas in Europe. Even if this activity required what was perhaps the greatest communal application of a workforce in the Early Bronze Age, the reasons for it must have been predominantly non–practical, arising rather from the psycho–social sphere. The unanticipated nature of the phenomenon leads to sceptical view of the chances for the archaeological identification of even mass activities of transcendental significance, particularly where such leave no large quantities of durable raw materials behind.
