1153. Autumnal leaf abscission of sugar maple is not delayed by atmospheric CO2 enrichment

To investigate the effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment on physiology and autumnal leaf phenology, we exposed 3-year-old sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) seedlings to 800 (A8), 600 (A6), and 400 μL(CO2) L-1 (AA) in nine continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) chambers during the growing season of 2014. Leaf abscission timing, abscised leaf area percentages, leaf number, light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PNmax), leaf area, accumulative growth rates, and biomass were determined and assessed. The results suggested the following: (1) no significant differences were found in the timing of leaf abscission in the three CO2-concentration treatments; (2) PNmax was continuously stimulated to the greatest extent in A8 at 319% and 160% in A6 until the end of the growing season, respectively; and (3) leaf number, leaf area, and accumulative height growth all significantly increased by elevated CO2, which led to a 323% increase in A8 biomass and 235% in A6 biomass after 156-d fumigation. In summary, the results suggest, the timing of leaf abscission of sugar maple in fall was not modified by CO2 enrichment, the increased carbon gain by elevated CO2 was mainly due to increased leaf area, more leaves, and the continuously enhanced high photosynthesis throughout the growing season instead of the leaf life span., L. This paper examines the possibility and the desirability of axiomatization in law. In the first part, the paper examines the notion of axiom and the ways how it was or could be introduced into law. It is here where the authors openly invite the reader to lose the conventional approach and think about alternative ways to build basic legal concepts. International Workshop on Astronomical X-Ray-Optics (AXRO) organized by the Institute of Astronomy of the CAS was focused on presentation and discussion of recent and future technologies for future X-ray astronomy missions. One session was aimed on astrophysical aspects of X-ray telescopes/satellites, in which some review talks were given from leading scientists in this field plus some presentations of relevant Czech scientists. The goal of the workshop was to present and to discuss recent and future technologies for X-ray astronomy missions. These missions require development of mostly inovative technologies, and discussed the possibilities, the results obtained so farm and new ideas in detail. Recenzentka představuje knihu francouzského historika, profesora pařížské Sorbonny a odborníka na dějiny reprezentací, symbolů a obrazů, která se zabývá fenoménem "lidské spodiny", jak se vynořil a proměňuje v euroamerické kultuře od počátku 19. století do současnosti. Zdánlivě neuchopitelné téma, unikající nástrojům sociálních věd, se autor nesnaží analyzovat metodami historické sociologie, ale prostřednictvím jeho administrativních, žurnalistických, turistických a uměleckých reprezentací. Důležité podle recenzentky je, jak autor převrací perspektivu a ukazuje, že dějiny lidské spodiny jsou především dějinami většinové společnosti a její potřeby popsat a pojmenovat své odvrácené stránky a strach z měnícího se světa, potřeby vylučovat, moralizovat a disciplinovat. Geografického omezení na frankofonní, anglofonní a hispanofonní svět lze sice litovat, může být ale také inspirující výzvou., The book under review, by the French historian Dominique Kalifa (is Director of the Centre for Nineeteenth-century History at the University of Paris, where he specializes in the history of crime, transgression, social control, and mass culture in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Europe, particularly France), is concerned with the phenomenon of the "lower depths" (or "dregs of society"), as they emerged and changed into Euro-American culture, from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present. The author does not seek to analyse this seemingly ungraspable topic using the methods of historical sociology, for it has long evaded study by the means available to the social sciences. Instead, he turns to the ways the subject has been represented by bureaucracies, journalists, tourism, and art. According to the reviewer, it is important how the author inverts the perspective, and demonstrates that the history of the dregs of society is mainly the history of majority society. That is to say, majority society has felt a need to describe and name its dark side and its fear of a changing world, to exclude, moralize, and discipline.
