- The paper aims at a unification of the two directions in contemporary philosophy of science: the direction which deals with the relation of data to phenomena with the direction which deals with the knowledge about mechanism and its employment in scientific thinking. It aims also at a reconstruction of the development of scientific knowledge which is characterized in contemporary philosophy of science as a movement from data, via phenomena, to mechanisms. An attempt will be made to show that this in fact amounts to an assignment of philosophical categories like data, phenomena, mechanism, etc. This unification and reconstruction draws also on the reconstruction of the main stages of the development of knowledge leading from A.-J. Ångström’s measurement of the wave-lengths of spectral lines of hydrogen in 1868 to N. Bohr’s theory of the hydrogen atom proposed in 1913., Práce se zaměřuje na sjednocení obou směrů současné filosofie vědy: směr, který se zabývá vztahem dat k jevům se směrem, který se zabývá znalostmi o mechanismu a jeho využití ve vědeckém myšlení. Zaměřuje se také na rekonstrukci rozvoje vědeckých poznatků, které jsou v současné filosofii vědy charakterizovány jako pohyb od dat, přes jevy, k mechanismům. Pokusíme se ukázat, že to ve skutečnosti představuje přiřazení filosofických kategorií, jako jsou data, jevy, mechanismy atd. - Tichý’s Transparent Intensional Logic (TIL) is an overarching logical framework apt for the analysis of all sorts of discourse, whether colloquial, scientific, mathematical or logical. The theory is a procedural (as opposed to denotational) one, according to which the meaning of an expression is an abstract, extra-linguistic procedure detailing what operations to apply to what procedural constituents to arrive at the product (if any) of the procedure that is the object denoted by the expression. Such procedures are rigorously defined as TIL constructions. Though TIL analytical potential is very large, deduction in TIL has been rather neglected. Tichý defined a sequent calculus for pre-1988 TIL, that is TIL based on the simple theory of types. Since then no other attempt to define a proof calculus for TIL has been presented. The goal of this paper is to propose a generalization and adjustment of Tichý’s calculus to TIL 2010. First I briefly recapitulate the rules of simple-typed calculus as presented by Tichý. Then I propose the adjustments of the calculus so that it be applicable to hyperintensions within the ramified hierarchy of types. TIL operates with a single procedural semantics for all kinds of logical-semantic context, be it extensional, intensional or hyperintensional. I show that operating in a hyperintensional context is far from being technically trivial. Yet it is feasible. To this end we introduce a substitution method that operates on hyperintensions. It makes use of a four-place substitution function (called Sub) defined over hyperintensions., Tichý Transparentní Intenzionální Logika (TIL) je zastřešující logický rámec vhodný pro analýzu všech druhů diskurzů, ať už hovorových, vědeckých, matematických nebo logických. Tato teorie je procedurální (na rozdíl od denotační) jedna, podle které je význam výrazu abstraktním, extra-lingvistickým postupem, který podrobně popisuje, jaké operace mají být aplikovány na to, jaké procedurální složky se mají dostat k produktu (je-li nějaký) řízení. to je objekt označený výrazem. Tyto postupy jsou přísně definovány jako konstrukce TIL. Ačkoli analytický potenciál TIL je velmi velký, odpočet v TIL byl spíše zanedbán. Tichý definoval postupný počet pro před-1988 TIL, to je TIL na základě jednoduché teorie typů. Od té doby nebyl předložen žádný další pokus definovat důkazní kalkul pro TIL. Cílem příspěvku je navrhnout zobecnění a úpravu Tichého kalkulu na TIL 2010. Nejprve stručně rekapituluji pravidla jednoduchého typu kalkulu Tichého. Pak navrhnu úpravy kalkulu tak, aby byl použitelný pro hyperintenze v rámci rozvětvené hierarchie typů. TIL pracuje s jednou procedurální sémantikou pro všechny druhy logicko-sémantického kontextu, ať už jde o extenzivní, intenzionální nebo hyperintenzionální. - I argue that the conception of reflective equilibrium that is generally accepted in contemporary philosophy is defective and should be replaced with a conception of fruitful reflective disequilibrium which prohibits ad hoc manoeuvres, encourages new approaches, and eschews all justification in favour of continuous improvement. - I consider and reject a specific criticism advanced by Korsgaard against virtue ethics and epistemology when these are conceived with the help of what she calls the image of the “Good Dog.” I consider what virtue ethics and epistemology would look like if the Good Dog picture of virtues were largely correct. I argue that attention to the features that make Korsgaard undermine the usefulness of virtues when conceived along the lines of the Good Dog picture reveals the opposite of what she claims. On the Good Dog picture, virtue ethics and epistemology are seen as more promising approaches to rationality than Korsgaard’s own advocacy of reflection.

- The runoff coefficient (RC) is widely used despite requiring to know the effective contributing area, which cannot be known a priori. In a previous work, we defined runoff length (RL), which is difficult to measure. This work aimed to define the minimum RL (mRL), a quantitative and easy proxy of RL, for use in a pilot study on biocrusts in the Tabernas Desert, Spain. We show that RC decreases according to a hyperbola when the contributing area increases, the independent variable being the length of the effective contributing area and its coefficient involving the effects of rainfall and surface features and antecedent conditions. We defined the mRL as the length of the effective contributing area making RC = 1, which is calculated regardless of the area. We studied mRL from three biocrust types and 1411 events clustered in seven categories. The mRL increased with rain volume and intensity, catchment area and slope, whereas plant cover and biocrust succession (with one exception) had a negative effect. Depending on the plot, mRL reached up 3.3–4.0 m on cyanobacterial biocrust, 2.2–7.5 m on the most widespread lichens, and 1.0–1.5 m on late-successional lichens. We discuss the relationships of mRL with other runoff-related parameters.

- The author defends a combination of Strawson’s account of definite descriptions as devices of singular reference par excellence with the Russellian truth-evaluation of utterances of sentences with descriptions. The complex Russellian proposition is, according to the author’s view, introduced by such utterances into communication as a by-product of the instrumental side of an attempt to make a singular statement. This, precisely like the instrumental aspects of similar attempts exploiting names or demonstratives has to be reflected by analysis but should not be confused with the communicative function of utterances. The success of all these attempts depends on the fulfilment of empirical conditions of various types, given by semantics of descriptions, names or demonstratives (unless the relevance of these conditions is neutralized by another identificatory factor dominating in given context). But their communicative function does not consist in claiming that these conditions are fulfilled.The author agrees with Strawson that the first two conjuncts of the complex Russellian proposition are introduced into communication as presuppositions: but argues in favour of defining presupposition (in pragmatic sense) in normative, rather the intentional terms., Autor obhajuje kombinaci Strawsonova popisu jednoznačných popisů jako prostředků singulární reference par excellence s Russellovským pravdivým hodnocením výroků vět s popisy. Komplexní Russellovo tvrzení je podle názoru autora zavedeno takovými projevy do komunikace jako vedlejší produkt instrumentální strany pokusu o vytvoření jednotného prohlášení. To, stejně jako instrumentální aspekty podobných pokusů využívajících jména nebo demonstrace, musí být zohledněno analýzou, ale nemělo by být zaměňováno s komunikativní funkcí promluv. Úspěch všech těchto pokusů závisí na naplnění empirických podmínek různých typů, daných sémantikou popisů, jména nebo demonstrace (pokud význam těchto podmínek není neutralizován jiným identifikačním faktorem, který v daném kontextu dominuje).
