In this study, cotton seedlings were subjected to osmotic-, salt- and alkali stresses. The growth, photosynthesis, inorganic ions, and organic acids in the stressed seedlings were measured, to compare the mechanisms by which plants adapt to these stresses and attempt to probe the mechanisms by which plants adapt to high pH stress. Our results indicated that, at high stress intensity, both osmotic and alkali stresses showed a stronger injurious effect on growth and photosynthesis than salt stress. Cotton accumulated large amount of Na+ under salt and alkali stresses, but not under osmotic stress. In addition, the reductions of K+, NO3 -, and H2PO4 - under osmotic stress were much greater than those under salt stress with increasing stress intensity. The lack of inorganic ions limited water uptake and was the main reason for the higher injury from osmotic-compared to salt stress on cotton. Compared with salt- and alkali stresses, the most dramatic response to osmotic stress was the accumulation of soluble sugars as the main organic osmolytes. In addition, we found that organic acid metabolism adjustment may play different roles under different types of stress. We compared the effects of salt-stresses (SS, 1: 1 molar ratio of NaCl to Na2SO4) and alkali-stresses (AS, 1: 1 molar ratio of NaHCO3 to Na2CO3) on the growth, photosynthesis, solute accumulation, and ion balance of barley seedlings, to elucidate the mechanism of AS (high-pH) damage to plants and the physiological adaptive mechanism of plants to AS. The effects of SS on the water content, root system activity, membrane permeability, and the content of photosynthetic pigments were much less than those of AS. However, AS damaged root function, photosynthetic pigments, and the membrane system, led to the severe reductions in water content, root system activity, content of photosynthetic pigments, and net photosynthetic rate, and a sharp increase in electrolyte leakage rate. Moreover, with salinity higher than 60 mM, Na+ content increased slowly under SS and sharply under AS. This indicates that high-pH caused by AS might interfere with control of Na+ uptake in roots and increase intracellular Na+ to a toxic level, which may be the main cause of some damage emerging under higher AS. Under SS, barley accumulated organic acids, Cl-, SO4 2-, and NO3 - to balance the massive influx of cations, the contribution of inorganic ions to ion balance was greater than that of organic acids. However, AS might inhibit absorptions of NO3 - and Cl-, enhance organic acid synthesis, and SO4 2- absorption to maintain intracellular ion balance and stable pH. and C.-W. Wang ... [et al.].
Gum acacia (GA) is used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries as an emulsifier and stabilizer, and in some countries in the traditional treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We have previously found that GA ameliorates adenine -induced chronic renal failure (CRF) in rats. Different brands of GA are commercially available, but their comparative efficacy against adenine-induced CKD is unknown. Here, we explored the effects of three different brands of GA (Sudanese GA, SupergumTM and GA from BDH) on some physiological, biochemical, and histological effects of adenine-induced CRF in rats. Adenine (0.75 %, w/w in feed, four weeks) reduced body weight, and increased urine output. It also induced significant increases in blood pressure, and in creatinine, urea, several inflammatory cytokines in plasma, and indices of oxidative stress, and caused histological damage in kidneys. Treatment of rats concomitantly with any of the three GA brands, significantly, and to a broadly similar extent, mitigated all the signs of CRF. The results suggested equivalent efficacy of these brands in antagonizing the CRF in this animal model. The objective of this work was to evaluate the relative trap efficiency of the three modified traps baited with 1-octen-3-ol as attractant, Box, Nzi and Canopy, for horse fly (Tabanidae) survey. Nine traps (three traps per trap type) were tested in 3 × 3 Latin square designs during summer 2011 in riparian oak-ash forests in the Danube floodplain of Croatia. Overall, the traps caught 1,986 specimens of 11 horse flies species during the study period. The most abundant species caught was Tabanus bromius (58%), followed by Tabanus tergestinus (21%), Tabanus maculicornis (16%), Tabanus sudeticus (2%), Atylotus loewianus (1%) and Tabanus autumnalis (1%). Both the Box traps and the Nzi traps had significantly greater catch efficiencies than the Canopy traps (βbox = 2.47, X2 = 65.48, df = 1, P < 0.001 and βnzi = 1.54, X2 = 25.12, df = 1, P < 0.001, respectively). Nzi traps had a catch rate 4.65 (95% CI: 2.55, 8.48) times greater than Canopy traps and Box traps had a catch rate 11.77 (95% CI: 6.48, 21.39) times greater than Canopy traps. This paper compares Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and MultiLayer Feed-forward neural network (MLF) in modeling a driver's decision when making a discretionary lane changing move on a freeway. The FIS model has been developed and published in an earlier work by the authors, whereas the SVM and MLF models are newly developed in this research. The FIS, SVM and MLF models use the same four inputs: the gap between the subject vehicle and the leading vehicle in the original lane, the gap between the subject vehicle and the leading vehicle in the destination lane, the gap between the subject vehicle and the trailing vehicle in the destination lane, and the distance between the preceding and trailing vehicles in the destination lane. The models give a binary decision of "no, stay in the same lane" or "yes, move to the destination lane now". These models were trained and then tested with the Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM) vehicle trajectory data. The results have shown that the FIS has the highest accuracies in making correct lane changing decisions. It recommends "yes, move to the destination lane now" with 82.2% accuracy, and "no, stay in the same lane" with 99.5% accuracy. The SVM model also outperformed the traditional gap acceptance model which was used as the benchmark. However, the MLF model was not as accurate as the gap acceptance model.
Trichodina centrostrigeata Basson, Van As et Paperna, 1983 from Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters) and O. niloticus (Linnaeus) from different host populations from Argentina, Mexico and South Africa was reviewed. Although T. centrostrigeata has a distinct denticle structure that makes morphological taxonomic inferences uncomplicated, variation of the denticles within and among individuals and populations were still observed. While traditional taxonomy of mobilines is heavily reliant on morphometrics, and recently even more so on molecular analysis, this paper proposes the use of geometric morphometry, specifically elliptical Fourier analysis, to address morphological conflicts that arise when comparing different populations. By applying this technique, combined with traditional taxonomy, it was found that T. centrostrigeata in this study can be grouped into two separate morphotypes, the first (type a) from aquaculture farms in Argentina and Mexico and the second (type b) from a natural habitat in Glen Alpine Dam, South Africa. This study supports the validity of geometric morphometry as an additional technique to distinguish not only between species but also evolutionary plasticity of the same species from different localities and habitats.
Chlorophyll a fluorescence, water potential (Ψs), and root system of Juniperus oxycedrus ssp. macrocarpa, Juniperus phoenicea ssp. turbinata, and Pinus pinea were studied in Mediterranean coastal dunes of SW Spain during summer drought and after fall rains in 1999, the driest year in the 90's. A strong and reversible depression in the photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 of the three species was recorded, which happened concomitantly with the diurnal increase and decrease in radiation. J. phoenicea, with superficial root system, was the most affected species by summer drought. It showed high rates of down-regulation of photosynthesis by photoinhibition and positive correlation between Ψs and Fv/Fp, with Ψs lower than -7 MPa. However, it tolerated this high stress, showing a fast recovery of its physiological state after fall rains. On the other hand, J. oxycedrus and P. pinea, both with deep root systems, kept their Ψs values up to -3 MPa, showing lower stress during summer drought. On the other hand, J. oxycedrus and J. phoenicea were more sensible to changes in edaphic water content than P. pinea. These specific responses to summer drought would be determined by their root distributions and stomatal control of transpiration, conditioning the efficiency in getting and using the available water resources. Ecophysiological responses indicate that these species are well-adapted to long periods of drought in Mediterranean climate areas, developing different strategies: J. phoenicea tolerates high stress with a fast recovery after fall rains, while J. oxycedrus and P. pinea are less affected by summer drought since their deep root systems would allow them to reach deep water resources. and J. During the past four decades, several species of aphidophagous Coccinellidae became established in North America, including Coccinella septempunctata, Harmonia axyridis, Hippodamia variegata, and Propylea quatuordecimpunctata. After their
establishment, unknown circumstances favoured a rapid increase in population densities and distribution of H. axyridis and C. septempunctata at localities hundreds and thousands of kilometers from their release sites. Propylea quatuordecimpunctata and Hippodamia
variegata have spread more slowly after becoming established in northeastern North America. Comparative studies based
upon allozyme variation in these four introduced species and in six native North American species of ladybird beetles revealed no
significant differences in genetic diversities. Genetic variation, assessed by allelic diversity and heterozygosity, was uncorrelated
with the establishment and spread of these predatory species in North America. All ladybirds studied show a remarkable degree of
dispersion with little detectable population subdivision.
Microsporidia have been known for some time to possess among the smallest genomes of any eukaryote. There is now a completely sequenced microsporidian genome, as well as several other large-scale sequencing efforts, so the nature of these genomes is becoming apparent. This paper reviews some of the characteristics of microsporidian genomes in general, and some of the recent discoveries made through comparative genomic analyses. In general, microsporidian genomes are both reduced and compacted. Reduction takes place through gene loss, which is understandable in obligate intracellular parasites that rely on their host for many metabolites. Compaction is a more complex process, and is as yet not fully understood. It is clear from genomes surveyed thus far that the remaining genes are tightly packed and that there is little non-coding sequence, resulting in some extraordinary arrangements, including overlapping genes. Compaction also seems to affect certain aspects of genome evolution, like the frequency of rearrangements. The force behind this compaction is not known, and is especially interesting in light of the fact that surveys of genomes that are significantly different in size yield similar complements of protein-coding genes. There are some interesting exceptions, including catalase, photolyase and some mitochondrial proteins, but the rarity of these raises an interesting question as to what accounts for the significant differences seen in the genome sizes among microsporidia.
