- Description:
- Hematopoiesis-modulating action of meloxicam, a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, has been evaluated in mice. Increased serum level of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) after meloxicam administration has been found in sublethally γ-irradiated animals. In further experiments hematopoiesis-stimulating effects of meloxicam and G-CSF given alone or in combination have been investigated. Granulocyte/macrophage progenitor cells counts were used to monitor these effects. Meloxicam and exogenous G-CSF did not act synergistically when given in combination, but could be mutually substituted during their repeated administration. The results suggest a promising possibility of using meloxicam as an auxiliary drug reducing the high costs of G-CSF therapy of myelosuppression., M. Hofer, M. Pospíšil, V. Znojil, J. Holá, A. - Description:
- The aim of this paper is to point out that the growing need for well‐educated citizens in the increasingly bureaucratized 18th Century, in itself a wellknown phenomenon, should be seen in a wider context. First, we must consider how it relates to the gradual emergence of the modern European nationstate; and secondly, to the cultural and political consequences of social stratification. In nations with a cohesive social structure and, in some cases, a tradition of statehood, the growing numbers and importance of the new intelligentsia were primarily the result of an expansion of existing elites drawing on their own social class. In emerging nations formed largely through nationalist movements, on the other hand, the process was accompanied by the upward mobility of young men from the middle and lower middle classes. In some nations, such as the Czechs and the Finns, these were often the sons of petit bourgeois and artisan families; but in the majority of cases the emergent national intelligentsia found its recruits chiefly among farmers and the rural population as a whole (Lithuania, Estonia). Understandably, this distinction led to differences in the formation of national stereotypes, political cultures and attitudes to social organization. The use of the term "plebeian intelligentsia" in this context is meant as a typological characteristic rather than a pejorative label., Miroslav Hroch., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy

- Description:
- Animal-free set-up enables a new series of experiments; from basic research describing trophic dependences of ticks to testing anti-tick compounds. Exploiting the cunning use of silicone membrane to mimic a host skin, in combination with perfumes that resemble the scents of a living animal, scientists from the Institute of Parasitology of the Biology Centre of the CAS gradually reveal what makes the tick a parasite. The membrane system is also intended for applied research, for testing anti-tick vaccines/compounds. and Jan Perner, Matěj Kučera, Petr Kopáček.

14269. Memories of the fourth condition and lessons to be learned from a suspicious externalism

- Description:
- A significant and interesting part of the post-Gettier literature regarding the analysis of propositional knowledge is the attempt to supplement the traditional tripartite analysis by employing a fourth condition regarding the defeasibility of evidence and thus to preclude the counterexamples displayed in Gettier’s original article. My aim in this paper is to critically examine the sort of externalism that accompanies the most promising of the proposed fourth conditions, due to Pollock, in order to offer some fresh insights on this old epistemological issue. I argue that Pollock’s paradigmatic treatment of the matter gives rise to a critical problem with regard to the exact role of the fourth condition and its relation with the onto-semantic or alethic condition of propositional knowledge, to wit, truth. In the light of this discussion, I draw certain conclusions about epistemic externalism and point out some of its theoretical shortcomings., Významnou a zajímavou součástí post-gettierovské literatury týkající se analýzy výrokových poznatků je pokus doplnit tradiční tripartitní analýzu využitím čtvrté podmínky týkající se nedotknutelnosti důkazů a tím vyloučit protiklady uvedené v původním článku Gettiera.

- Description:
- Ant Colony Optimization is a meta-heuristic for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems. It is a constructive population based approach inspired by the social behavior of ants. In our research, we are focused on the parallel/distributed computing on massively parallel systems. More precisely, we want to adjust Max-Min Ant System (one of Ant Colony Optimization algorithms) for these systems. Traditionally, a matrix is used to store the pheromone information. If we want to solve large instances, this is a very memory consuming solution. In this paper, we propose a different approach. We do not use the matrix to store the pheromone information. Instead, ant trails that are normally incorporated into this matrix are stored during the computation and just some parts and only in time when they are really needed are assembled. Proposed solution was implemented in C++. The implemented solution was tested on large symmetric instances of Traveling Salesman Problem. In these experiments, we were able to compute results with a comparable quality and even faster than with the traditional approach while using only a portion of the original memory.
