Justifying the subordinated position of women in society by appealing to biological sex diferences has a long history and is popular today, too. In this article the author aims to reconstruct some counter-arguments against such kind of legitimisation of gender inequality developed by Harriet Taylor Mill and John Stuart Mill in the 19th century. These philosophers articulated the problem of women’s subjection, and in line with their liberal position argued for women’s liberation on the grounds of freedom and social justice as well as on those of ethical utilitarism. The author argues that the arguments of these philosophers merit attention even today., Mariana Szapuová., Poznámky na s. 12, Nesrovnalost křestního jména Mariana Szapuová, Obsahuje bibliografii, and Resumé o klíčová slova anglicky na str. 3
Martina Klicperová-Baker uvádí a diskutuje knihu Threat to Democracy (Hrozba demokracii) politického psychologa F. M. Moghaddama. Další diskuse těchto témat je velice vítána. and Since politics is to a great degree applied psychology, psychologists should get involved in the analysis of the current democratic decline and reversal of this trend. Martina Klicperová- Baker introduces and discusses the book Threat to Democracy by a political psychologist, F. M. Moghaddam. Many of its useful concepts will very likely enter the vocabulary of the discipline, e.g., the springboard model to dictatorship, sacred groups, fractured globalization, and political plasticity. Also, Moghaddam’s circular explanation of history (peoples who free themselves from a dictatorship often find themselves trapped by another dictator) and his suggestion to replace multiculturalism with a unifying humanistic orientation (omniculturalism) are very topical. The article is devoted to discussion and elaboration of the main concepts of the book. Klicperová-Baker augments the springboard model of dictatorship theory and converts it into a diagram; she expands definition of populism into a prosocial/antisocial dichotomy; she supplements the “sacred groups” (religion, ethnicity, and race) used by dictators with an additional category of “dark sacred groups” which result from fear and hatred and lead to a negativistic counter-identification (racism, misogyny, malevolent religious self-righteousness, a priori antigovernmental rebelliousness, unsubstantiated climate denial, homophobia). The main point of argument is the concept of freedom (attached and detached freedom) and applicability of Fromm’s “escape from freedom” to the current situation. It is concluded that if Fromm’s idea is not consensual, perhaps the notion of “escape from democracy” is. Further discussion of the matter is very welcome.

Freedom or control of how we act is often and very naturally understood as a kind of power-a power to determine for ourselves how we act. Is freedom conceived as such a power possible, and what kind of power must it be? The paper argues that power takes many forms, of which ordinary causation is only one; and that if freedom is indeed a kind of power, it cannot be ordinary causation. Scepticism about the reality of freedom as a power can take two forms. One, found in Hume, now often referred to as the Mind argument, assumes incompatibilism, and concludes from incompatibilism that freedom cannot exist, as indistinguishable from chance. But another scepticism, found in Hobbes, does not assume incompatibilism, but assumes rather that the only possible form of power in nature is ordinary causation, concluding that freedom cannot for this reason exist as a form of power. This scepticism is more profound-it is in fact presupposed by Hume’s scepticism-and far more interesting, just because freedom cannot plausibly be modelled as ordinary causation., Svoboda nebo kontrola toho, jak jednáme, je často a velmi přirozeně chápána jako druh moci - moc určovat si, jak jedeme.
