A unique geographic location of the Krkonoše Mts. during the glacial periods (in the forefront of the continental ice shield) together with relatively harsh climatic conditions of the summits during the Holocene, provide suitable conditions for the occurrence of many glacial relicts from different taxonomic groups. Glacial relicts show continuous distribution in taiga and tundra biomes, with isolated occurrences in montane and alpine belts in mountain ranges of the moderate climatic zone. The article provides an overview of glacial relicts in the Krkonoše Mts. and Jan Vaněk, Jan Materna, Jiří Flousek.
A tiny terrestrial snail Vertigo geyeri is an example of a typical late-glacial relict in the central Europe. It inhabits exclusively treeless fens and is highly endangered in most of its area and internationally protected. So far, only three recent and highly isolated populations have been found in the Czech Republic. The first one, a small calcareous spring fen located in the V Dubech Nature Monument was however damaged by construction of drainage canals and summer droughts in the last few years and the future survival of this population is doubtful. New sites found in 2011 (the Louky u Jeníkova NM and the Ratajské rybníky NM) document that the species is still extant in the Czech Republic at more sites than previously thought., Jan Myšák, Michal Horsák, Jaroslav Č. Helminti, známí též jako červi, jsou v tradičním pojetí považováni za více či méně závažné parazity zvířat a člověka. Současný výzkum však postupně odhaluje i jejich druhou tvář a hledá jejich možné využití v moderní medicíně., Helminths, also known as worms, are traditionally considered to be more or less serious parasites for both animals and man. Nevertheless, current research has revealed some beneficial attributes and aims to uncover their potential application in modern medicine., and Tomáš Macháček, Jana Bulantová, Lucie Jedličková, Roman Leontovyč, Jan Pankrác, Vladimír Skála, Libuše Turjanicová, Petr Horák.
Areas where they occur are primarily blackwater, but also mixed, i.e. black and clear water. When bred in human care it is rewarding to see them in simple and well-maintained small and medium-sized aquaria with above-average occurrence of residual organic matter. They are peace-loving fish that do not mix well with aggressive neighbours. Simple maintenance is easy, but only experienced breeders will normally manage to breed them., and Jaroslav Eliáš.
