We have investigated the effect of a diet containing of 4 % oyster fungus (Pleurotus ostreatus) and 0.1 % cholesterol on glycaemia and hyperlipoproteinaemia in rats with insulin-dependent diabetes (streptozotocin 45 mg/kg). After two months, the rats with diabetes kept on the oyster fungus diet, had a significantly lower basal and postprandial glycaemia, the insulinaemia remained unchanged. The cholesterol concentration was decreased by more than 40 %, the lipoprotein profile was upgraded by the decrease of the cholesterol in both the low density and very low density lipoproteins. The oyster fungus decreased the cholesterol accumulation in the liver and had no significant effects on the levels of serum and liver triacylglycerols.
The paper deals with the effect of the parameters of aqueous slurries of particulate matter on the functional relationship between the specific energy and the flow rate of hydrodynamic dredge pumps. The empirical conversion equations available from literature are reviewed. The methods of converting the pump characteristics at clear water to those which apply for slurries have been incorporated into a straightforward, user-friendly computer program which can be run on a PC. The program may be adopted in the design of hydro-transportation systems involving hydrodynamic dredge pumps. In the Orinoco lowlands, savannas have been often replaced by pastures composed of the C4 grass, Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. We addressed following questions: (1) How does the replacement of the native vegetation affect CO2 exchange on seasonal and annual scales? (2) How do biophysical constraints change when the landscape is transformed? To assess how these changes affect carbon exchange, we determined simultaneously the CO2 fluxes by eddy covariance, and the soil CO2 efflux by a chamber-based system in B. decumbens and herbaceous savanna stands. Measurements covered a one-year period from the beginning of the dry season (November 2008) to the end of the wet season (November 2009). During the wet season, the net ecosystem CO2 exchange reached maximum values of 23 and 10 μmol(CO2) m-2 s-1 in the B. decumbens field and in the herbaceous savanna stand, respectively. The soil CO2 efflux for both stands followed a temperature variation during the dry and wet seasons, when the soil water content (SWC) increased above 0.087 m3 m-3 in the latter case. Bursts of CO2 emissions were evident when the dry soil experienced rehydration. The carbon source/sink dynamics over the two canopies differed markedly. Annual measurements of the net ecosystem production indicated that the B. decumbens field constituted a strong carbon sink of 216 g(C) m-2 y-1. By contrast, the herbaceous savanna stand was found to be only a weak sink [36 g(C) m-2 y-1]. About 53% of the gross primary production was lost as the ecosystem respiration. Carbon uptake was limited by SWC in the herbaceous savanna stand as evident from the pattern of water-use efficiency (WUE). At the B. decumbens stand, WUE was relatively insensitive to SWC. Although these results were specific to the studied site, the effect of land use changes and the physiological response of the studied stands might be applicable to other savannas., J. San José, R. Three secondary compounds, pyrocatechol, gramine and ferulic acid from wheat were separately incorporated into artificial diets and fed to cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) larvae to determine their effects on larval and pupal weights and the nutritional indices of the larvae. The results show that these three secondary compounds can decrease the mean larval and pupal weights of cotton bollworm, with the mean larvae weights differing significantly between treatments. Mean pupal weight was only significantly reduced by ferulic acid and gramine, but not pyrocatechol. There were significant correlations between mean larval weight and concentration of the three secondary compounds tested, and between mean pupal weight and concentration of ferulic acid and gramine. The three secondary compounds tested affected the nutritional indices of cotton bollworm larvae differently. Compared with the control, ferulic acid and gramine significantly decreased RGR (the relative growth rate), AD (approximate digestibility) and ECD (conversion efficiency) of cotton bollworm larvae, and pyrocatechol only reduced ECD. All three indices were the lowest for cotton bollworm larvae fed on the diet with gramine (0.0984 ± 0.0114 g/g/day, 14.2670 ± 1.1541% and 31.1337 ± 1.1213%).
In order to enhance the mass production of the house fly, Musca domestica, five aspects of its oviposition biology were analyzed. Oviposition substrate and the manner of its presentation, the composition of the diet of the adults, size of the pupae and numbers of flies in a cage were identified as critical. Females preferred to lay eggs on a substrate which was presented within a shelter and with increased linear edges against which the flies could oviposit. Different types of oviposition substrate resulted in comparable yields of eggs. The presence of an oviposition attractant (ammonia) in the manure was found to have a potentially positive effect on female fecundity. Egg yield increased when two protein sources (yeast and milk) were included in the adult diet. However, flies fed a mixture of sugar and yeast laid over 50% fewer eggs than those fed the same proportion of sugar and milk. The fecundity of flies decreased with increase in the number of flies per cage, but the highest total number of eggs per cage was obtained when the flies were most crowded (14.2 cm3 per fly). The Asian long-horned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, is a serious destructive pest of forests throughout China as it attacks a wide range of host plants. The effect of host trees on the cold hardiness of A. glabripennis larvae could be the basis for predicting the performance of this forest pest on different common hosts.To evaluate the effect of different species of host plant on the cold hardiness of overwintering larvae of A. glabripennis, we measured the supercooling point (SCP), fresh mass, protein content and concentrations of low molecular weight substances in overwintering larvae collected from three different host species (i.e., Populus opera, Populus tomentosa and Salix matsudana). Mean SCPs and protein contents of larvae from these three hosts differed significantly. The SCPs and protein contents of the larvae collected from P. opera and P. tomentosa were significantly higher than those collected from S. matsudana. The concentrations of glycerol, glucose and trehalose in overwintering larvae collected from these host species also differed significantly, but there were no significant differences in the concentrations of sorbitol and inositol. The larvae that were collected from S. matsudana had the highest concentrations of glycerol and trehalose and those from P. opera the lowest contents of glycerol, whereas those from P. tomentosa had the lowest concentrations of trehalose but the highest concentrations of glucose. Because of the significant differences in the quantities of these biochemical substances in their bodies, the cold hardiness of overwintering larvae of A. glabripennis was significantly dependent on the tree they fed on. The effects of altered thyroid state on the antioxidant defense system in the liver of differently aged rats were examined. Male rats aged 15, 45 and 75 days were treated with L-thyroxine, T4 (40 g/100 g body mass, s.c., one dose per day) for 14 days (finally aged 30, 60 and 90 days, respectively). The following antioxidant defense enzymes were measured: superoxide dismutases (both copper zinc, CuZn-SOD and manganese containing, Mn-SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), as well as the content of low molecular mass antioxidant glutathione (GSH). The effect of T4 on antioxidant defense system in the liver differs with respect to age. T4 treatment decreased CAT and GST activities, as well as the content of GSH in animals aged 60 and 90 days. The same treatment elevated GR activity in rats at 30 days of age, this phenomenon was not observed in older animals. The different response of immature rats to thyroxine compared to older animals could be attributed to the differences in thyroxine metabolism and the developmental pattern. Direct effect of T4 on mature rats can be considered as a part of its overall catabolic action.
Previous studies have demonstrated that both tick saliva and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato antigens modulate the cytokine response of the host. In this paper, the effect of salivary gland extract (SGE) from Ixodes ricinus (L., 1758) ticks on cytokine production by primary cultures of mouse epidermal cells stimulated with Borrelia afzelii Canica, Nato, du Merle, Mazie, Baranton et Postic, 1993 spirochetes was analysed. Epidermal cells were derived from C3H/HeN mice, susceptible to Lyme disease, and BALB/c mice, which are resistant. In cultures from C3H/HeN mice, SGE down regulated production of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and up regulated Th2 cytokine, interleukin 4 (IL-4). Cultures from BALB/c mice produced higher basal levels of monitored cytokines, but their production was affected by SGE a different way. While Th2 cytokines IL-6 and IL-10 were down regulated, the effect on TNF-α and IL-4 was ambiguous. These results indicate that the effect of tick saliva on the epidermal cells of Lyme disease-susceptible C3H/HeN mice mirrors its effect on other cells of the immune system.
Direct sowing with non-woven fabric mulch is the new organic rice cultivation system. We studied the effect of topdressing on individual leaf photosynthesis at different position and grain yield in rice plants cultivated by this system. Leaf photosynthetic rate at the different leaf position per plant (PN-LP) of the third and fourth to lower leaves was higher when the topdressing amount was increased. Without topdressing or in no-fertilizers plots, the PN-LP values of lower leaves were very low. The leaf photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area (PN-LA) decreased gradually as the leaf position became lower. Again, the PN-LA values of the top-dressed plots at the lower leaves were higher than that of plots without topdressing or without fertilizers. The lower leaves maintained a higher PN because of a higher rate of nitrogen accumulation due to topdressing. The higher rate of photosynthesis in these leaves resulted in better root activity, which contributed to a better ripening percentage and ultimately higher rice grain yield. and S. T. Hossain, H.
