Práce se zabývá některými aspekty aktuálního členění věty v rovinách novinářského a odborného stylu současné psané angličtiny. Je zaměřena zejména na identifikaci informační kontury textu, výskyt sdělných jednotek a sdělných polí, míru porušování principu linearity, zastoupení dynamických sémantických škál, znázornění dynamiky široké a úzké scény a v neposlední řadě také na výskyt tří typů tematických posloupností (posloupnosti s návaznou tematizací tématu, posloupnosti s průběžným tématem a posloupnosti s tematickým odvozováním). Tyto aspekty jsou použity k ověření výchozí hypotézy o stylistické platnosti aktuálního členění. ,The study investigates selected aspects of Functional Sentence Perspective (FSP) in contemporary English news and academic prose, namely the information contour of text, the occurrence of communicative units and communicative fields, violation of the FSP linearity principle, the occurrence of dynamic semantic scales, dynamics of broad and narrow scenes, and the types of thematic progressions, including simple linear thematic progressions, progressions with continuous (constant) themes, and progressions with derived themes. These aspects are taken into consideration to address a hypothesis that FSP phenomena are stylistically relevant.

Vychází od roku 2009 dvakrát ročně. Je pokračováním stejnojmenného periodika založeného v roce 1959, jehož prvních jedenáct svazků vyšlo v rámci edice Spisy Filozofické fakulty Univerzity J. E. Purkyně v Brně (v letech 1959-1976), poté vycházelo v rámci Sborníku prací filozofické fakulty brněnské univerzity, řady K, germanisticko-anglistické, ISSN 0231-5351 (1979-1994) a dále jako řada S, anglistická, ISSN 1211-1791 (1995-2008). ,Brno Studies in English, ISSN 0524-6881 (print), 1805-0867 (online), is a peer-reviewed international scholarly journal published by the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, Brno (Czech Republic). The monograph is a contribution to the study of the interactions between semantics, pragmatics and syntax. It offers an analysis of English causative contructions with intransitive verbs of motion (secondary agent constructions), which have been dealt with so far only partially. The analysis is mainly bulit on the material from the BNC and COCA. It identifies several (partially overlapping) constructional subtypes and a set of factors which enable the verbs to enter into them. The monograph is an interdisciplinary work, bringing new insights into cognitive linguistics (especially in the analysis of a causation of motion) and building on insights from psycholinguistics and philosophy of language. The monograph is designed for linguistists and students of linguisitcs. ,Monografie je příspěvkem ke studiu vztahů mezi rovinou sémantickou, pragmatickou a syntaktickou. Na materiálu převážně z Britského národního korpusu a Korpusu současné americké angličtiny analyzuje anglické kauzativní konstrukce s intranzitivními slovesy pohybu (konstrukce se sekundárním konatelem), které byly dosud v literatuře pojednány pouze parciálně. Identifikuje několik (částečně se překrývajících) konstrukčních podtypů a soubor faktorů, které umožňují slovesům vstupovat do daných konstrukcí. Práce má interdisciplinární povahu: přináší nové poznatků z psycholingvistiky a filozofie jazyka. Práce je určena lingvistům a studentům lingvistiky.

This study is concerned with the term wit and its use in contemporary and early modern literary and aesthetic theories. More specifically, it deals with the literary and aesthetic implications of wit and its French equivalent esprit as they were theorized in critical writings of several authors of the early modern England and France – Dominique Bouhours, Chevalier de Méré, Nicolas Boileau-Déspreaux, John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Joseph Addison. The objective of the study is to re-assess the English concept of wit, nowadays regarded as an out-dated device of past poetic systems, and to present it as vital and useful part of the contemporary discourse. The second goal is to provide comparative reading of early modern English and French theoretical texts dealing with wit and esprit, respectively. Presenting ideas on wit as employed in the theoretical writings in the light of its French equivalent, the study aims to demonstrate a gradual development of the terms from rhetoric to aesthetic. ,Práce se zabývá především anglickým termínem wit v jeho moderním i historickém kontextu. Dále se zabývá literárními a estetickými důsledky pojmů wit a esprit a jejich použitím v teoretických spisech několika kritiků v období raně moderní Anglie a Francie. Práce má dva hlavní cíle. Prvním cílem je přehodnocení anglického pojmu wit, který je dnes považován za poněkud zastaralý výrazový prostředek historických poetických systémů a prezentovat jej jako životaschopnou a užitečnou součást současného uměleckého diskurzu. Druhým cílem této práce je poskytnout srovnávací výklad raně moderních anglických a francouzských teoretických textů zabývající se termíny wit a esprit.

Kniha zkoumá, jakou roli sehrály romány Henryho Fieldinga v průběhu všeobecné reformy veřejného vystupování, přičemž se blíže soustřeďuje na vývoj maskulinních vzorů, který je spojen s proměňujícím se chápáním zdvořilosti v letech 1742–1751. Publikace prezentuje analýzy Fieldingových obrazů maskulinity v souvislosti s dynamickými požadavky na ekonomické, politické a estetické standardy, a nabízí tak přínosný a komplexní pohled na jeho dílo v dobovém kontextu. ,This book explores the role of Henry Fielding’s novels in the context of the general project of reformation of manners and focuses on the development of the models of masculinity in his novels, which parallels the shifts in understanding of politeness in the years 1742–1751. It considers several viewpoints related to the changing economy, politics and aesthetic requirements of the time and uses them to analyse how Fielding's models of masculinity dealt with these complex perspectives.
