The paper presents the first historically available designs of two-element objectives - doublets, which origin in the second half of the 18th century and in 19th century. Parameters of those doubles are presented. Moreover, the calculation of their optical characteristics is done, and methods for numerical design of non-cemented and cemented doublet are shown as well. and Práce představuje první historicky dohledatelné návrhy dvoučlenného objektivu pro dalekohledy - dubletu, které pocházejí z druhé poloviny 18. století a ze století 19.
a1_LUKEŠ, Igor: Československo nad propastí: Selhání amerických diplomatů a tajných služeb v Praze 1945-1948. Z angličtiny přeložili Jan Jirák a Ladislav Köppl. Praha, Prostor 2014, 383 strany, ISBN 978-80-7260-292-6. Monografie Igora Lukeše vyšla původně ve Spojených státech pod názvem On the Edge of the Cold War: American Diplomats and Spies in Postwar Prague (New York, Oxford University Press 2012). Československo nad propastí: Selhání amerických diplomatů a tajných služeb v Praze 1945-1948. Trans. from the English by Jan Jirák and Ladislav Köppl. Prague: Prostor, 2014, 383 pp., ISBN 978-80-7260-292-6. The book under review is a Czech translation of Igor Lukeš’s On the Edge of the Cold War: American Diplomats and Spies in Postwar Prague (New York and Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012), whose Czech title translates as ‘Czechoslovakia on the edge of the abyss: The failure of US diplomats and secret services in Prague, 1945-48’. The first of the three reviews, published here as part of the section ‘Three Readings of One Book’, is conceived on the broader plan of an analysis of US-Czechoslovak relations in the years immediately after the Second World War. The book, according to the reviewer, is the result of extensive research in all of the important American and Czech archives. Moreover, it is to the author’s great credit that he conducted numerous interviews with people involved in the described events and has made use of the unpublished manuscripts they provided him with. He offers a highly attractive, indeed gripping, account, thanks to which the reader gets a very good idea of what it was that led to the Communist takeover in late February 1948. But this picture is neither complete nor balanced. In this work about the failure of US diplomats and the US secret services in Prague, its greatest strength, according to the reviewer, is, somewhat paradoxically, the revealing passages about the activities of the Czechoslovak intelligence services against the US Embassy and its representatives in Czechoslovakia., b2_What is problematic, however, is the interpretations based on insufficient sources, factual imprecision, and careless interpretation or even intentional shifts, which the reviewer exposes by analysing the withdrawal of the US Army from Czechoslovakia, the role of Czechoslovakia in post-war US policy, and the character of the US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia, Laurence A. Steinhardt (1892-1950). Lukeš, according to the reviewer, too readily accepts the idea that Czechoslovakia was of great importance as an American ‘testing ground’ to determine the possibilities of maintaining friendly relations with the Soviet Union, while he fails to take into account essential shifts in developments. Above all, however, he presents a contrived portrait of Steinhardt as an originally capable and responsible diplomat who, in consequence of professional failures in his Prague mission, ceased to take an interest in Prague events, paying more attention to his private affairs than his ambassadorial duties., and Petr Mareš.

Celkově je Houdova kniha důležitým kamenem do mozaiky poznání, k drahokamu má však daleko., In the fi rst part of this review article, the author critically considers mainstream Czech contemporary history writing as a whole. Apart from the missed opportunities to tackle potentially ''big'' topics that might also be of interest to readers outside the Czech Republic - which unfortunately only a few individuals have devoted themselves to - he argues that historians’ being suspicious of, or ignoring, any kind of theoretical concept and profounder methodological consideration is a chronic malady of the fi eld here. This weakness, according to him, is manifested both in a stubbornly one-sided orientation to primary sources (in the worst case merely ‘copying out archive records’), and, on the other hand, adopting current Western theoretical and methodological approaches and applying them mechanically to Czech historical material. The author then freely relates his theses to Přemysl Houda’s Intelektuální protest, nebo masová zábava? Folk jako společenský fenomén v době tzv. normalizace (Intellectual protest or mass entertainment? Folk music as a social phenomenon in the ‘Normalization’ period), published in 2014., The reviewer, however, does not aim to use this book as a prime example of these shortcomings - instead, it represents for him simply one publication of a whole range of comparable ones. Houda, argues the reviewer, has tackled the important and so far little-researched topic of Czech folk music in the 1970s and 1980s, but he too suffers from overly narrow specialization and from mistrust of theory, and he also partly neglects the relevant literature. The reviewer considers each chapter in the book, and points out the problems, for example, the author’s neglecting the continuity on the folk-music scene between the 1960s and the period of ‘Normalization’ (after the crushing of the Prague Spring reform movement), the lack of a defi nition of ‘folk music’, the excessively narrow selection of singer-songwriters he considers, the overly brief analysis of their lyrics, and insuffi cient attention to the essence of such a diverse genre and the transformations it went through. Better than in the book’s more general chapters, the author has, according to the reviewer, succeeded in the case studies devoted to particular folk-music phenomena. Though Houda’s book is on the whole an important stone in the mosaic of our knowledge, the reviewer concludes, it is far from a gem., and Zdeněk R. Nešpor.
Keplerův spis Astronomia nova představuje jedno z nejvýznamnějších astronomických děl všech dob. Obsahuje odvození vztahů, jimž dnes říkáme první a druhý Keplerův zákon pohybu planet. Kepler zde uplatnil nový přístup k astronomii, fyzice a vesmíru vůbec, když vyšetřoval eliptickou dráhu, po níž se Mars pohybuje kolem Slunce. Vysvětlení pohybu Marsu pojal nejen geometricky, ale využil i fyzikální magnetickou hypotézu., Kepler's Astronomia nova is one of the most important astronomical texts ever written. It contains what are known today as Kepler's first two laws of planetary motion. Kepler created a new approach to astronomy, physics of the heavens, based upon an examination of the motion of Mars, which is moving around the Sun on an elliptical path. The interpretation of the motion of Mars was not based only on geometrical demonstrations but also on a physical magnetic hypothesis., Vladimír Štefl., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The volume under review, whose title translates as ‘Conclaves: Papal Elections in the Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries’, by a specialist on Church history, considers a topic that has hitherto not been systematically discussed in Czech and Slovak historiography - namely, the changes undergone by the papal conclave in the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century. According to the reviewer, the author, in his attempt to offer as much information as possible, does not provide a guideline with which the reader, left to fumble blindly, might distinguish between the important and the less important, and he also fails to take into account important foreign publications., and [autor recenze] Marek Šmíd.
Nastoluje i důležité otázky, mnohé však v jeho knize zůstává nedopovězeno, takže nakonec připomíná nedohranou píseň., The reviewer presents Přemysl Houda’s book as a whole, and concludes that, in view of its thematic breadth but short length, some relevant topics and arguments could not be developed satisfactorily. Houda explores folk music mainly from the standpoint of its relation to society and the powers that be. He therefore follows on from the traditional line of interpretation about certain areas of popular music in Communist Czechoslovakia having been ‘little islands of freedom’, remnants of independent thinking, and well-springs of opposition attitudes. The development of popular music, however, represents for him a prelude to social change, and folk music serves him as a means to gauge the nature, limits, and internal contradictions of the ‘Normalization’ system. The reviewer takes issue with Houda’s accent on the folk-music audience having been a special community characterized by a critical attitude towards the current régime, and he emphasizes that folk-music audiences lacked the attributes of a sub-culture, did not otherwise express their critical attitude, and did not, as a group, become the target of systematic persecution. On the other hand, he praises Houda’s observation that folk musicians legitimized their critical mission in lyrics by using themes and forms acceptable to the authorities. Houda, according to the reviewer, has usefully demonstrated, using the example of folk music, the confl ict and the parallelism of the dictatorship and free activities, and has thus revealed the internal contradictions and fl exible boundaries of the Normalization system as well as its insurmountable limits. Though Houda raises important questions, much in his book remains unanswered, and ultimately it brings to mind a song that has not been played to the end., and Jiří Smlsal.
Josef Šafařík’s philosophising reflects an important stage in our nation’s cultural development. The article seeks to trace the distinctive trait of his reflections, his positing of contrasting polarities. Such polarities present not only the motivational contrasts of human behaviour but also the possibility of application to the chronology of history. It is precisely this context of historical interpretation – presented most fully in Šafařík’s life-work, On the Way to the Last – which may in retrospect offer an in¬sight into the very nature of the polar articulation of Šafařík’s thought.
