A new species of tetraphyllidean cestode in the genus Trilocularia is described from an undescribed shark species, Squalus cf. mitsukurii, off the coast of South Africa. Trilocularia eberti sp. n. is the second known member of its genus, and like its congener, T. gracilis (Olsson, 1866-1867) Olsson, 1869, is extremely hyperapolytic, dropping proglottids from its strobila while they are still very immature. Characteristic of the genus, it possesses a distinctive scolex with triloculated bothridia, but differs conspicuously from its congener in its possession of an anterior loculus that is much larger in width relative to the paired posterior loculi, and also in its possession of an anterior, enlarged region of its free proglottids that is triangular with a slit-like ventral aperture, rather than rounded and cup-like. This anterior region of the free proglottid is used in attachment, and its development is described. For assessment of fecundity, an attempt was made to record all free proglottids of all ages found in both host individuals, and yielded an average estimate of 362 free proglottids being produced per individual worm of T. eberti sp. n. Both Trilocularia species parasitize sharks of the genus Squalus, and given the host specificity typically exhibited by tetraphyllideans and preliminary examinations of other members of this shark genus, it is likely that other Squalus species will be found to host additional new Trilocularia species.
Metaschistura cristata is a small nemacheilid loach species found at a few localities only in Turkmenistan and Iran. The present study reports, for the first time, data on its biology, based on 747 specimens collected from the River Zanglanlou in north-eastern Iran. Specimens were collected at monthly intervals over two reproductive seasons from February to June 2007 and 2008. Maximum age, based on opercula readings, was 4+ years for both sexes. Specimens ranged in size from 25 to 87 mm total length and weighed from 0.09 to 4.91 g. Length-weight relationships implied positive allometric growth for both sexes and the sex ratio was 1 : 1.2 in favour of females. The Gonadosomatic indicated that peak reproduction occurred during April and May, with highest average values of 1.473 ± 0.99 for males and 12.9 ± 7.14 for females in April. Oocyte diameter ranged from 0.53 to 1.46 mm, with a mean value of 0.943 mm. Absolute and relative fecundity ranged between 114-1246 eggs and 79.47-1285.71 eggs/g, respectively. Absolute fecundity and oocyte diameter to fish size (length and weight) were directly correlated, while the relationship between relative fecundity and fish size (length and weight) showed an inverse power function.
The growth and reproductive biology of the invasive goldfi sh Carassius auratus auratus were studied in Lake Trasimeno, central Italy. The results of the research revealed that the population is made up of eight age-classes. The sex ratio proved to be extremely unbalanced (1 : 19 in favour of females). Growth can be deemed rapid, the von Bertalanffy growth in length function being TL = 43.019{1- e(-0.272(t+0.162) )} for the total sample and Ф’ = 2.702. No sexual dimorphism in growth was observed. Back-calculation analysis suggested the existence of an inverse Lee phenomenon among 1 year-old specimens. The reproductive period covers a broad time-span, from March to June. In females, sexual maturity is reached after the second winter of life (2+ age-class); however, a small percentage (7.55%) of females is able to reproduce at the age of 1 year. Most of the males attained sexual maturity in the fi rst year (60.61%). The reproductive investment of the females is high; the relationship between SL and the number of eggs was Ne = 0.0041 SL4.368. Fecundity varied from 286 to 219104 eggs, with an average relative fecundity of 103 ± 5 eggs g-1; the mean diameter of the eggs was 1.27 ± 0.01 mm. The reproductive investment of the females was not homogeneous across the ageclasses; in addition to absolute fecundity, relative fecundity and egg diameter were seen to increase with the size of the specimens.
German cockroaches spend most of the day in aggregations within shelters, which they leave in nocturnal foraging trips; cockroaches are rarely seen outside shelters during daylight hours. However, when population density exceeds shelter availability, diurnal aggregations form in exposed, unsheltered locations. To determine if shelter availability affects fitness of B. germanica, we reared cohorts of nymphs in laboratory arenas with or without shelters, and measured reproduction and longevity of tagged adults. When shelters were available in arenas, nymphs developed faster, adults gained more body mass, and females produced more fertile oothecae than when arenas lacked shelters. Therefore, shelter alone has a significant positive effect on growth and reproduction of B. germanica, and reducing or eliminating shelters should affect population growth of B. germanica in residential and industrial settings. and César Gemeno, Gregory M. The duration of development, reproduction and longevity of Gastrophysa viridula (DeGeer) was measured at constant temperatures and a long day photoperiod. At 18, 21.5, 25, and 28°C the average duration of development of the egg, larval and pupal stages and total development time (28.2, 21.6, 16.1, 15.0 days) decreased with temperature but the proportion of time spent in the egg, larval and pupal stages did not significantly change with temperature. Total development required 304.6 day degrees above the lower development threshold of 7.1°C. Pre-adult mortality and the rate of oviposition increased, and the duration of oviposition decreased with increasing temperature. Net reproduction rate Ro decreased (from 157 female eggs at 18°C to 75 female eggs at 28°C) and mean generation time T also decreased (from 45.5 days at 18°C to 24.1 days at 28°C) with increasing temperature. The intrinsic rate of population increase rm increased with temperature (from 0.111 at 18°C to 0.179 at 28°C). On a physiological time scale the average generation time T was 496 day degrees.
The life cycle of marine Eubothrium sp. (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea), from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) was experimentally completed in one year and included only one intermediate host (Acartia tonsa Dana) (Copepoda: Calanoida). Adult cestodes were collected from farmed salmon, and ripe eggs released by the cestodes were fed to Acartia tonsa. Ingested eggs hatched in the gut and the larvae developed in the haemocoel of the copepod for 15 days at 16°C. A total of 170 seawater-reared salmon were exposed to infected copepods and the total prevalence of Eubothrium sp. in the salmon after infection was 95.3%, with a mean intensity of 15.0 (range 1-87). The infected salmon were kept in the laboratory where the growth of the cestodes was studied for eleven months. Mean length of the cestodes increased with time, but a large variation among the cestodes was observed. Growth and maturation of the cestodes were dependent on host size and the number of worms present in the intestine. No evidence of mortality of Eubothrium sp. was observed during the experimental period.
The development stages of a species may have an identical lower development threshold (LDT) and proportionally different durations. This phenomenon called "rate isomorphy" (RI) has been demonstrated for a number of insect species. In contrast, the growing day degrees accumulated over the period of larval development (sum of effective temperatures SET) should be plastic and vary with environment conditions. The prediction from RI is that, with changing conditions, the uniform LDT should be accompanied by differences in development time which remain proportional at different temperatures. This was tested by investigating the effect of diet on thermal requirements for development of larvae of the polyphagous species Autographa gamma (L.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The larvae were kept at 15.0, 20.3 and 26.7°C and fed on leaves of 13dicotyledoneous herb and tree species. The proportion of total development time spent on a particular diet was plotted against temperature. The existence of RI was inferred from a zero change in development time proportion with changing temperature. This rigorous test supported RI for 3 of 9 diets where development was completed in all temperatures. The LDT observed on 11 diets where the larvae completed development in at least 2 temperatures varied between 9.3 and 11.0°C while SET varied between 167 and 353 day degrees (dd). Assuming RI, LDT and SET for those 9 diets were recalculated. The recalculated LDT was 10.0°C and SET varied between 177-257 dd. The SET increased with decreasing water content and decreasing nitrogen content of food. Worsening food quality decreased food consumption, metabolic and food conversion efficiency, and the relative growth rate of the larvae. Increasing metabolic costs of development were thus positively correlated with SET. The standardized rate of growth (mg.dd-1) was typical for particular diets. Pupal mass decreased with increasing temperature and, within each temperature, with development length.
Life history traits of the vulnerable Iberian loach Cobitis calderoni were studied in the River Lozoya, a regulated river in Central Spain. A total of 163 specimens were collected on five occasions, from April to December 1990. In general C. calderoni grew isometrically and a length-frequency analysis showed 4–5 age classes. Parameters fitted to the von Bertalanffy growth model showed variation in growth rates between the sexes. The gonadosomatic index for both sexes were similar and varied among months, with the highest values in April, just before the onset of the spawning season in Spring.
In the internal French Alps, subalpine grasslands become dominated by the tussock grass, Festuca paniculata, when mowing ceases. Does litter or living plants affect seedling recruitment in these subalpine communities, and does this vary between mown and unmown grasslands? Can the vegetation patterns observed in the field be related to the effects of F. paniculata? These hypotheses were tested using both a field and pot experiment. Seedlings of Bromus erectus, a subordinate species in these grasslands, were used as phytometers in both experiments. At both mown and unmown subalpine grassland sites in the French Alps, a removal experiment was established. This field experiment included removal of litter and living vegetation in order to differentiate their respective effect on seedling establishment. Vegetation and litter had contrasting effects. Vegetation affected the recruitment success of B. erectus by limiting seedling growth at the mown site and survival at the unmown site. Litter modified recruitment only at the unmown site, where it increased survival but limited growth. Survival and growth of seedlings responded to different environmental factors. Survival was determinedmore by soilmoisture, while growth probably dependedmore on light availability.Where there is a thick litter layer, as is the case in unmown subalpine grasslands, the competitive effect of vegetation can be counterbalanced by an increase in soil moisture due to the litter reducing rate of evaporation of water. The effect on seedlings of the presence of Festuca paniculata, the dominant species at these sites, was also quantified using a pot experiment, including a cutting treatment. This experiment showed that the competitive effect of the vegetation could be largely explained by the inhibitory effect on growth of the dominant species, F. paniculata. This study provides a better understanding of the processes that result in conservative plants, such as F. paniculata, becoming dominant in these subalpine environments upon cessation of traditional management practices.
Little is known of the life history of Cobitiscf. satunini, a loach species native to the Caucasus and southern Caspian Basin. Life history characteristics of this species were examined in 568 specimens collected from the Siahroud stream (northern Iran) between February and June 2010. The specimens ranged in size from 27 to 103 mm total length and weighed from 0.13 to 8.93 g total weight. The overall sex ratio was unbalanced as females dominated, with 342 females and 226 males being caught (sex ratio 1.5 : 1). Length-weight relationships implied that growth was positively allometric for both sexes. The von Bertalanffy growth function was estimated to be Lt = 94.95 (1 – e– 0.49 (t + 0.34)) for males and Lt = 121.65 (1 – e–0.39(t + 0.43)) for females. Egg diameter ranged from 0.44 to 1.02 mm, with a mean value of 0.77 mm. Absolute fecundity varied from 212 to 4666 eggs. Fecundity relative to total weight fluctuated from 383 to 268 eggs g–1. These growth and reproduction traits may be interpreted as species life history capacity and/or adaptation to environmental conditions caused by the southern Caspian climate.
