Disorders of ATP synthase, the key enzyme of mitochondrial energy provision belong to the most severe metabolic diseases presenting as early- onset mitochondrial encephalo- cardiomyopathies. Up to now, mutations in four nuclear genes were associated with isolated deficiency of ATP synthase. Two of them, ATP5A1 and ATP5E encode enzyme’s st ructural subunits α and ε , respectively, while the other two ATPAF2 and TMEM70 encode specific ancillary factors that facilitate the biogenesis of ATP synthase. All these defects share a similar biochemical phenotype with pronounced decrease in the content of fully assembled and functional ATP synthase complex. However, substantial differences can be found in their frequency, molecular mechanism of pathogenesis, clinical manifestation as well as the course of the disease progression. While for TMEM70 the number of reported patients as well as spectrum of the mutations is steadily increasing, mutations in ATP5A1, ATP5E and ATPAF2 genes are very rare. Apparently, TMEM70 gene is highly prone to mutagenesis and this type of a rare mitochondrial disease has a rather frequent incidence. Here we present overview of individual reported cases of nuclear mutations in ATP synthase and discuss, how their analysis can improve our understanding of the enzyme biogenesis., K. Hejzlarová ... A new species of amphizoic amoeba, Nuclearia pattersoni sp. n., isolated from gills of Rutilus rutilus L. is described. It is characterised by elongate flattened trophozoites of irregular shape. The longer dimension of their bodies is 13.2 (11.0-15.7) µm. Filopodia radiating mostly from the poles are 2 to 2.5 times longer than the body. The diameter of less frequently observed spherical trophozoites is 8.2-10.8 µm; their filopodia radiate to all directions. Cyst-like stages have shorter pseudopodia that arise from one pole only. The surface of locomotive forms from agar plate cultures has a thin amorphous glycocalyx, while most cells are covered by two layers of extracellular matrix. Mitochondria have flattened cristae, dictyosomes are located in the perinuclear zone. A conspicuous ultrastructural feature of the morphologically similar N. simplex, perinuclear striated band, is not present. Light microscopic and ultrastructural data are completed with the sequence of SSU rRNA gene and phylogenetic analysis including sequences of related taxa. The bacterial endosymbiont found in N. pattersoni type strain RR2G2 is assigned to the genus Rickettsia.
The main maturation stages of Norway rat megakaryocytic series, megakaryoblasts and mature megakaryocytes, stained by silver for demonstration of argyrophil nucleolus organizer regions (AgNORs) were investigated to provide basic information on the number of nucleoli and interphasic AgNORs in these cells. The results showed that megakaryoblasts as well as mature megakaryocytes possess numerous nucleoli; their number and also the number of AgNORs is significantly higher in less mature than in more mature cells. The number of AgNORs in megakaryocytes of the Norway rat and man are virtually the same, although the numbers of nucleolar organizers per haploid chromosome set differ markedly. This fact leads to the conclusion that the number of interphasic AgNORs depends on the function and metabolic state of the cell rather than on the number of nucleolar organizers.
The mechanism of sex determination is common for all honeybee species (Apis spp.) by the complementary sex determination (csd) gene. The csd gene has been studied in the Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.), the Eastern honey bee (Apis cerana F.) and the giant honey bee (Apis dorsata F.), whereas no studies had been conducted on the high altitude Himalayan or black giant honey bee, Apis laboriosa Smith. In the present study, we cloned the genomic exon 6 to exon 9 region of the A. laboriosa csd gene, and identified 13 csd haplotypes. The data was analyzed and compared with the other aforementioned three honeybee species. The results showed that, as with the other three Apis species, region 3 of the csd gene contains an RS domain at the N terminal, a proline-rich domain at the C terminal, and a hypervariable region in the middle. A phylogenetic tree showed that the csd haplotypes from A. laboriosa fell into one clade with those from A. dorsata, and were separated from those from the other two species, A. mellifera and A. cerana. The network map also showed that the csd haplotypes from A. laboriosa and A. dorsata are well mixed among each other, and do not form two separate branches. Pairwise Fst analysis revealed that the value between A. laboriosa and A. dorsata was very low (0.098), confirming a close relationship to exist between them., Huan Wang ... Nudaciraxine imperium sp. n. (Monogenea: Axinidae) is described from the gills of the needlefish Tylosurus acus imperialis (Rafinesque) caught in the Gulf of Gabès, Tunisia. This new species mainly differs from both previously described species, Nudaciraxine gracilis (Linton, 1940) Price, 1962 from Strongylura marina (Walbaum) and Nudaciraxine cabosanlucensis Payne, 1990 from Ablennes sp., by having more testes (42 vs. 20-22 and 32, respectively). Nudaciraxine imperium also differs from N. gracilis by having a median vaginal pore (submedian in N. gracilis), narrower clamps (52-70 µm vs. 75-100 µm) and differently shaped haptoral lateral hamuli. From N. cabosanlucensis it can be distinguished by a J-shaped rather than U-shaped ovary, a longer cirrus pouch (125-190 µm vs. 64-70 µm), an oesophageal bifurcation slightly anterior to genital complex (immediately after pharynx in N. cabosanlucensis) and a wider guard on the lateral hamuli. In agreement with Payne (1990), the diagnosis of the genus Nudaciraxine Price, 1962 is amended as follows: vaginal pore dorsal, median to submedian, armed or not with horn-like spines. This is the first report of the genus Nudaciraxine in the Mediterranean Sea. The potential use of axinid monogeneans as biological tags for subspecies of belonid fishes is discussed.

In this paper, we prove the exact null controllability of certain diffusion system by rewriting it as an equivalent nonlinear parabolic integrodifferential equation with variable coefficients in a bounded interval of R with a distributed control acting on a subinterval. We first prove a global null controllability result of an associated linearized integrodifferential equation by establishing a suitable observability estimate for adjoint system with appropriate assumptions on the coefficients. Then this result is successfully used with some estimates for parabolic equation in Lk spaces together with classical fixed point theorem, to prove the null controllability of the nonlinear model.
