Článek popisuje případ pacienta s náhle vzniklou obstipací, bolestmi břicha a normocytární anémií. Endoskopické vyšetření horní a dolní části trávicího traktu vyloučilo organickou příčinu obtíží. Vyšetření nátěru krve a aspirátu kostní dřeně s nálezem hrubého bazofilního tečkování v erytrocytech a erytroblastech upozornilo na možnost otravy těžkými kovy. Mikroskopické vyšetření nátěru krve s nálezem převážně hrubého bazofilního tečkování erytrocytů však může na tuto vzácnou diagnózu upozornit., This article reports on patient that has been presented with sudden onset of constipation, abdominal pain and normocytic anemia. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy ruled out an organic diseases. In peripheral blood and bone marrow aspirates mears, coarse basophilic stippling of erythrocyte (and erythroblasts) point out a possibility of heavy metal poisoning. The level of plumbemia exceeded 8.4 times the maximal permitted value for common (non-professional) population. A source of poisoning was indentified from a glaze on a ceramic jug, from which the patient had drank tea with lemon for three months. A lead concentration in the tea extract was 227 mg/kg. In developed countries, lead poisoning is a rare diagnosis. As the symptoms are nonspecific, missed diagnoses could occur, especially in sporadic, non-occupational exposure. However, a microscopic evaluation of the peripheral bloods mear with finding of predominantly coarse basophilic stippling of erythrocyte mayle ad to suspicion of lead poisoning., and Iva Hoffmanová, Petra Kačírková, Irena Kučerová, Rudolf Ševčík, Daniel Sánchez
Na závěr zvažuje, nakolik je možno poznat mentální svět společnosti doby vikinské pouze na základě archeologického svědectví. and Inhumation grave F II at the Viking Age burial site of Stengade II (Langeland, Denmark) is usually interpreted as an example of the burial of a man together with his slave. The decapitation and fetters on the body of the slave are taken to indicate the execution of the slave during the burial of the master. This view has recently been challenged by Zdeněk Smetánka, who argues (mostly on the basis of comparative evidence) that the traces of violence on the body are an expression of “crainte des mortes”, i.e. that the mutilated man was not a slave but rather a person suspected of becoming a revenant after his death. The author of the present article, relying mainly on surviving literary evidence, dismisses this theory, and pleads rather for the standard interpretation. The conclusion questions the possibility of understanding the mental world of Viking Age society solely on the basis of archaeological evidence.
The Eurasian otter is one of the most endangered mammals in Italy and its distribution is now restricted in two isolated portions in southern Italy. However, in recent times, this species has shown a tendency to expand its range, especially northwards. It is therefore important to identify suitable areas on the border of its expansion range where the species can establish and disperse, so that these areas can be targeted for conservation actions. To this aim, the distribution, quality and connectivity of habitats of seven river catchments located in the northern portion of the current otter range in Italy were assessed. Catchments included both rivers where the otter currently occurs and where it is likely to expand in the short-medium term. An expert-based Habitat Suitability (HS) model was developed and validated using otter presence-absence data based on standard field surveys. Fine scale riverbank land cover, extra-riparian coarse scale land cover, altitude, bank slope, and human disturbance were considered as the main factors in the HS model. These variables were available or newly created in the form of digital maps (layers) and the HS model was built by sequentially filtering these layers. Connectivity was assessed within and between river basins through landscape algorithms by taking into account variables that could influence otter dispersal.Tthe results indicated that the seven rivers considered are heterogeneous both in terms of habitat suitability and in terms of connectivity. Among these, one river in particular (the river Volturno), where otters are currently present, showed one of the largest extensions of suitable habitats and the best connectivity both within the river and between the river and the neighbouring catchments, suggesting that this river could play a strategic role in the survival and expansion of otters in the surrounding areas.
Food composition of otter, Lutra lutra, was studied by the analysis of 349 spraints found during one year period (2003–2004) at the River Kamenice (Czech Republic), where Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, fry have been stocked regularly since 1998 in a reintroduction programme for the species. Brown trout, Salmo trutta m. fario, dominated otter diet and formed 29% of all prey items and 62% of biomass of all fish eaten. The second most abundant prey (27%) was common sculpin, Cottus gobio, followed by Atlantic salmon, and grayling, Thymallus thymallus. The proportion of salmon in the diet of otters amounted to 14.5% in numerical abundance of all prey items taken and 2% in biomass of fish component of the diet. The majority (71.5%) of fish eaten by otters had a total length between 61 to 200 mm.
Rhythmic daily changes in the Na,K-ATPase activity have been previously described for rat kidney cortex, showing two peaks: at 0900 h and 2100 h, and two valleys: at 1500 h and 0100 h - 0300 h. The oscillations in Na,K-ATPase activity are produced by an inhibitor, which binds the enzyme and is present in the rat blood plasma at valley times and absent or at very low concentrations at peak times. Since it has been demonstrated that active Na+ extrusion from the cells of several tissues depends not only on the Na,K-ATPase but also on the ouabain-insensitive Na-ATPase, we studied the activity of this latter enzyme of several rat tissues, i.e., kidney cortex, small intestine, liver, heart and red blood cells along the day. None of these tissues showed any variation of their Na-ATPase activity along the day. Preincubation of kidney cortex homogenates obtained at 0900 h, with blood plasma drawn at 0900 h and 1500 h, did not modify the Na-ATPase activity. Our results indicate that the Na-ATPase activity does not oscillate along the day. These results are in agreement with the idea that the Na-ATPase could partially compensate the Na+ transport affected by oscillations of the Na,K-ATPase activity., A. Reyes ...
