Recent studies demonstrated remote effects of renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury on some organs such as brain, liver, and lungs. We investigated the effects of renal I-R injury on function, histology and oxidative stress state of pancreas. Twenty -four male adult Sprague-Dawley rats were divided equally into 2 groups; sham group: rats underwent midline laparotomy and dissection of renal pedicles without renal ischemia, and ischemic group: rats underwent bilateral renal ischemia for 45 min. Renal functions (serum creatinine and BUN), pancreatic functions (serum amylase, lipase and insulin) and fasting blood glucose were measured at 2 h, 1 day, 3 days and 7 days after ischemia. Also, pancreatic histology and malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase and reduced glutathione (GSH) were examined at 2 h and 7 days after ischemia. The ischemic rats showed significant increase in serum creatinine and BUN with significant increase in serum amylase and lipase at 2 h, 1 day and 3 days after ischemia. Blood glucose and fasting insulin showed no significant change apart from significant increase in insulin in sham group at 1 day after ischemia. Pancreas isolated from ischemic rats showed significant increase in histopathological damage score and significant increase in MDA and catalase enzyme with decrease in GSH. In conclusion, bilateral renal ischemia for 45 min caused significant impairment of pancreatic functions and histology. Human islet transplantation seems to be a very promising clinical procedure for patients with type I diabetes mellitus. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of in situ intravascular flushing with University of Wisconsin (UW) solution and intraductal collagenase injection at the time of pancreas procurement on the isolated islets and exocrine tissue injury. Our experiments indicated that in situ perfusion with the UW solution has a beneficial effect on pancreatic islets and intraductal distention results in an increase in the concentration of pancreatic enzymes released into the cold preservation solution during ischemic conditions. Cold ischemia reduced islet yield, but pancreas perfusion with the UW solution showed better ischemic tolerance of isolated islets during glucose static incubation. We conclude that intravascular pancreas flushing has a crucial effect on recovery and yield of pancreatic islets and protects against exocrine tissue injury.
Pancreatic schwannoma is a rare neoplasm. By 2012, there were only 47 cases reported on pancreatic schwannoma the English literature to the best of our knowledge. Hereby, we report a 37-year-old Caucasian male with a cystic schwannoma in the head of the pancreas. The patient, complaining of vague abdominal pain and pruritus underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen. The CT scan of the abdomen revealed a cystic lesion in the head of the pancreas. Initially, a cystic mucinous tumor of the pancreas was suspected. Whipple’s procedure was undertaken. The histopathologic evaluation of the specimen revealed a pancreatic schwannoma. The patient did well postoperatively. Pluripotent pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs) receive growing interest in past decades. Two types of PSCs are recognized – vitamin A accumulating quiescent PSCs and activated PSCs- the main producents of extracellular matrix in pancreatic tissue. PSCs plays important role in pathogenesis of pancreatic fibrosis in pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis. PSCs are intensively studied as potential therapeutical target because of their important role in developing desmoplastic stroma in pancreatic cancer. There also exists evidence that PSC are involved in other pathologies like type-2 diabetes mellitus. This article brings brief characteristics of PSCs and recent advances in research of these cells.
Automaty obsahující z hlediska zdravé výživy nevhodné potraviny a nápoje jsou dnes běžně umisťovány ve školách, nemocnicích a téměř ve všech veřejně přístupných budovách. Jsou typickými atributy celosvětově se rozmáhající fast-foodové kultury, která je jednou z příčin pandemie obezity, a to včetně alarmujícího nárůstu obezity u dětí. Automaty umisťované ve školách jsou v tomto kontextu velmi nebezpeč- né. Nejenomže posilují u dětí nesprávné výživově zvyklosti, ale také zásadně zpochybňuji důvěryhodnost výchovy ke zdraví. Z těchto důvodů v některých zemích dnes již existuje buď úplný zá- kaz automatů ve školách vůbec nebo je zavedena přísná regulace jejich obsahu. Článek podává stručný přehled o situaci ve vybraných zemích, a to s důrazem na země EU, včetně informace o vývoji a nejnovějších politických iniciativách v ČR., Vending machines containing inappropriate foods and beverages in terms of healthy eating are routinely placed in schools, hospitals and almost in all public buildings. They are typical attributes the growing and worldwide fast-food culture, which is one of the causes of obesity pandemic, including the alarming rise in obesity among children. In this context, vending machines placed in schools are very dangerous. Not only enhance children incorrect nutritional habits, but also fundamentally challenged the credibility of health education in schools. Therefore, in some countries today there is either a complete ban on sale „junge food“ and placement of vending machines in schools or there is a strict regulation of their content.
