- Description:
Autori práce sa v práci zamerali aj na komplikácie operačnej korekcie a typické nálezy, ktoré umožnia rentgenológovi tieto komplikácie zachytiť., Pectus excavatum is the most common inborn deformity of the chest. Severe deformity is considered to be an absolute indication for surgical correction. Indication criterias are dependent on multiple factors, but the severity of the malformation based on rádiológie assessment is the most important. Standard chest X-ray and native MDCT examination offer the evaluation of the severity of the deformity with the use of basic indices like Halier, correctional, vertebral or fronto-sagittal index. The evolution of minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair (MIRPE) and high number of asymmetric deformities treated with this procedure has brought the necessity for the creation of new indices. These indices help surgeons to individually preshape implanted bar in complex cases. Authors concentrate on complications of both procedures and their typical radiological findings., Martin Lučenič, Miroslav Janík, Peter Juhos, Roman Benej, Svetozár Harušiak, and Literatura

- Description:
- Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, i.e. breathing pure oxygen under increased environmental pressures serves as a treatment for diverse medical conditions. However, elevated oxygen concentration can be detrimental to central nervous system or lungs. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of repeated exposure to HBO on mitochondrial respiration assessed by highresolution respirometry (HRR), cell viability estimated by PrestoBlue® reaction, morphology analyzed by routine phase contrast and fluorescent microscopy, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and citrate synthase (CS) activities using human lung fibroblasts. The cells were exposed to HBO for 2 h per day for 5 consecutive days. One day after the last exposure, HBO cells displayed significantly smaller area and perimeter, compromised viability and elevated SOD activity. No changes were detected in CS activity or quality of mitochondrial network. HRR revealed impaired mitochondrial oxygen consumption manifested by increased leak respiration, decreased activity of complex II and compromised ATP-related oxygen consumption when fatty acids were oxidized. Our findings document that in conditions mimicking chronic intermittent exposure to HBO, lung fibroblasts suffer from compromised mitochondrial respiration linked to complex II and impaired cellular growth in spite of increased antioxidant defense. Underlying mechanism of this HBO-induced mitochondrial dysfunction should be further explored.

- Description:
- Disturbed circadian activity of the sympathetic system may be involved in negative consequences of chronodisruption on the cardiovascular system. We studied daily changes in pressure response to adrenergic stimulation in rats exposed to repeated phase advance shifts (PAS) of light/dark (LD) regimen. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and locomotor activity was measured by radiotelemetry in normotensive Wistar rats exposed to repeated PAS (three 8-h shifts per week) lasting for 12 weeks. Norepinephrine was administered subcutaneously in the middle of L and D during week 12 of PAS exposure. In the control LD cycle, cardiovascular parameters exhibited significant daily rhythms with expected higher values during D than L phase. Rats exposed to PAS showed disturbed rhythms without a BP and HR increase. Administration of norepinephrine to control rats revealed daily variability in the cardiovascular response with higher stimulation of BP during L than D. This daily pattern of BP response to norepinephrine was diminished in the PAS group. The damped daily variability in pressure response to norepinephrine and augmented response during the light phase of the day suggest that the increased and desynchronized activity of the sympathetic system may worsen responses of the cardiovascular system to load in individuals exposed to irregular LD conditions., L. - Description:
- We examined oviposition decisions by Hippodamia convergens Guérin in semi-natural arenas in the laboratory. Gravid females were presented individually with an array of four young sorghum plants, Sorghum bicolor, bearing (1) no additional stimulus, (2) an established colony of greenbug, Schizaphis graminum Rondani, (3) residues of conspecific larvae, and (4) greenbugs plus residues of conspecific larvae. Females laid no egg masses on type 3 plants, significantly fewer than expected by chance on type 4 plants, and significantly more on type 1 plants, with type 2 plants receiving expected numbers. Females laid 50% of egg masses on elements of the arena other than the plants, especially the cage screen, suggesting that females sought to distance their eggs farther from larval residues than the spacing of plants in the arena permitted (15 cm). When the experiment was repeated with plants exposed to larvae of Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer, the repellency was weaker. Once again, clean plants were the most preferred and aphids did not increase the acceptability of plants with larval residues. Nevertheless, only 18% of egg masses occurred off the plants and larval residues did not reduce the acceptability of aphid-bearing plants as did conspecific larval residues. Simultaneous choice tests conducted with individual third instars of both species revealed that C. maculata larvae consumed H. convergens eggs as readily as conspecific eggs, but H. convergens larvae preferred conspecific eggs to those of C. maculata. We conclude that H. convergens oviposition decisions are shaped by the risks of both egg cannibalism and predation.

- Description:
- Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was shown to have therapeutic potential for some neurological and psychiatric disorders. Previous studies reported that low-frequency rTMS (≤1 Hz) affected synaptic plasticity in rats, however, there were few investigations to examine the possible effects of rTMS on structural synaptic plasticity changes in rats, which included the effects on synaptic morphology in the hippocampus, synaptic protein markers and Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein II (CaMKII). Sprague-Dawley rats were subject to 500 pulses of 0.5 Hz rTMS for 15 days, or sham stimulation. After last stimulation, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and real-time PCR were used to determine the effects of rTMS on synaptic plasticity. Results showed that rTMS could cause the change of structural synaptic plasticity, increase the expression of synaptic protein markers: synaptophysin (SYN) and increase the expression of CaMKII, relative to normal rats. suggesting a modulatory effect of chronic rTMS on synaptic plasticity that may be attributed to the increased expression of CaMKII in rats.

- Description:
- Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is non-invasive neuromodulation method. We applied rTMS for the treatment of farmacoresistant chronic orofacial pain. We compared the effect of 10 Hz an d 20 Hz stimulation. The study included 23 patients for 20 Hz stimulation and 36 patients for 10 Hz stimulation with pharmacoth erapy resistant chronic facial pain aged 33-65 years with pain duration of at least 6 months. Monitoring of treatment effects was performed within 15 minutes of each rTMS application (days 1-5) and finally stimulation (active vs. sham coil). If compared with data with 10 Hz rTMS study (n=36) and with 20 Hz rTMS (n=23) trials using a parallel design. Only the results obtained in a series of five rTMS treatments in the first step (active n=24, sham n=12), that 20 Hz frequency rTMS using a higher intensity (95 % of motor threshold) to be equally effective relative to VAS (Visual analogue scale) and QST (quantitative sensory testing). In conclusions, the better results with the relief of orofacial pain were obtained with 20 Hz stimulation if compared with 10 Hz stimulation. It was proved with subjective (VAS) and object ive evaluation (QST). rTMS can be used in the treatment of chronic intractable pain., J. Fricová ...
