A greenhouse study was performed in order to investigate the effects of three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species on vegetative growth, water relations, and mineral composition parameters of snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus cv. Bells white) under irrigation from different water sources. Five irrigation treatments included using purely desalinized (fresh) water (DW), as a control, three different blends of DW with saline ground water from a well with increasing salinity, and one with 100% of saline well water. Inoculation with AMF enhanced growth rates and a relative water content of snapdragon plants grown under well-water irrigation. AMF also improved the leaf water potential and increased water-use efficiency of the plants. Shoot and root dry masses were higher in the AMF-treated plants than those in AMF-free plants. In both shoots and roots, concentrations of total P, Ca2+, N, Mg2+, and K+ were higher in the AMF-treated plants compared with AMF-free plants under salt-stress conditions. Shoot Cl- and Na+ concentrations were lower in the AMF-treated plants than those in the AMF-free plants grown under well-water irrigation. Snapdragon plants exhibited a high degree of dependency on AMF; it improved plant growth rates and leaf water relations, particularly, with increasing salinity of irrigation water., Y. I. Soil moisture is the main limiting factor for vegetation growth at shell ridges in the Yellow River Delta of China. The objective of this study was to explore the soil moisture response of photosynthetic parameters and transpiration in Tamarix chinensis Lour., a dominant species of shell ridges. Leaf photosynthetic
light-response parameters and sap flow were measured across a gradient of relative soil water content (RWC), from drought (23%) to waterlogging (92%) conditions. Leaf photosynthetic efficiency and stem sap flow of T. chinensis showed a clear threshold response to soil moisture changes. Leaf net photosynthetic rate, water-use efficiency (WUE), light-saturation point, apparent quantum yield, maximum net photosynthetic rate, and dark respiration rate peaked at moderately high RWC, decreasing towards high and low values of RWC. However, peak or bottom RWC values substantially differed for various parameters. Excessively high or low RWC caused a significant reduction in the leaf photosynthetic capacity and WUE, while the high photosynthetic capacity and high WUE was obtained at RWC of 73%. With increasing waterlogging or drought stress, T. chinensis delayed the starting time for stem sap flow in the early morning and ended sap flow activity earlier during the day time in order to shorten a daily transpiration period and reduce the daily water consumption. The leaf photosynthetic capacity and WUE of T. chinensis were higher under drought stress than under waterlogging stress. Nevertheless, drought stress caused a larger reduction of daily water consumption compared to waterlogging, which was consistent with a higher drought tolerance and a poor tolerance to waterlogging in this species. This species was characterized by the low photosynthetic capacity and low WUE in the range of RWC between 44 and 92%. The RWC of 49-63% was the appropriate range of soil moisture for plant growth and efficient physiological water use of T. chinensis seedlings., J. B. Xia, Z. G. Zhao, J. K. Sun, J. T. Liu, Y. Y. The effect of UV-A radiation (365 nm) and the protective effect of preillumination with red light (RL, 664 nm, 10 min) or with a combination of red and far-red light (FRL, 727 nm, 10 min) on the activity of the PSII as well as the expression levels of selected genes, especially those encoding chloroplast proteins (sAPX, tAPX, CAB1, and D1), were studied in leaves of the 26-d-old hy3 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, which is deficient in the phytochrome B apoprotein. The effects were compared with corresponding effects observed in the hy2 mutant of A. thaliana, which is deficient in the phytochrome chromophore. Illumination with UV-A decreased the photosynthetic pigment content, the maximum photochemical quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), and the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII). The reduction of the Fv/Fm ratio and ΦPSII was more pronounced in the mutants as compared to wild-type plants (WT). The preillumination of the leaves with RL caused a significant reduction in the inhibitory effect of UV-radiation on the PSII activity in the WT plants, but it caused only a small decrease in the hy3 mutant. The preillumination of leaves with RL and FRL combination compensated the protective effect of RL on the UV-induced decrease of the fluorescence parameters in the WT. Such reversibility is typical for involvement of red/far-red reversible phytochromes at low intensity light. The results suggest an important role of red/far-red reversible phytochromes (phytochrome B) in the resistance of PSII to UV-A radiation caused by changes in contents of either carotenoids or other UV-absorbing pigments probably through biosynthesis of these pigments. The data also demonstrated that phytochrome B and other phytochromes can affect the PSII stress resistance by the fast regulation of the expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes and transcription factors at the step of gene transcription., V. In Indian agro-ecosystems Rhynocoris marginatus (F.) is one of the most abundant predatory arthropods and feeds on a wide range of insect pests. We investigated the responses of R. marginatus to six species of cotton pests: Spodoptera litura (F.), Sylepta derogata (F.), Pericallia ricini (F.), Mylabris indica (Thunberg), Mylabris pustulata (Thunberg) and Dysdercus cingulatus (F.), in terms of its predatory behaviour (approach and handling times), weight gain, macromolecular profile (content of carbohydrates, proteins, free aminoacids and lipids) and haemocytic profile. We also determined the predator's reliance on kairomones from different species of prey. Larvae of the species of Lepidoptera studied were approached and captured more quickly than adults of the two meloid coleopteran and one heteropteran pest and were more beneficial to the predator in terms of weight gain. Predators had a higher total protein content when reared on larvae of the three lepidopteran species, higher lipid content when reared on adults of the two meloid coleopteran species and a higher carbohydrate content when reared on adults of one heteropteran species. The number of haemocytes was greater in predators reared on larvae of the Lepidoptera studied, followed by those reared on adults of the heteropteran and lowest in those reared on adults of the two meloid coleopterans. Response to kairomones was strongest for S. litura followed by S. derogata and M. pustulata. We conclude that the Lepidoptera studied tended to be, for this predator, superior prey, with S. litura being especially beneficial and the prey species for which R. marginatus has the highest kairomonal preference. Moreover, we propose that R. marginatus may be useful as a biocontrol agent against lepidopteran cotton pests., Kitherian Sahayaraj, Subramanian Muthu Kumar, Annie Enkegaard., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The response of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) to abiotic stress has been widely investigated. Recent physiological studies focus on the use of osmoprotectants to ameliorate stress damage, but experiments at a field level are scarce. Two tomato cultivars were used for an experiment with saline water (6.57 dS m-1) and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) in a silty clay soil. Rio Grande is a salinity-tolerant cultivar, while Heinz-2274 is the salt-sensitive cultivar. Exogenous application of proline was done by foliar spray at two concentrations (10 and 20 mg L-1) during the flowering stage. Control plants were treated with saline water without proline. Proline at the lower concentration (10 mg L-1) increased dry mass of different plant organs (leaves, stems, and roots) and it improved various chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters compared with controls. Regarding mineral nutrition, K+ and P were higher in different organs, while low accumulation of Na+ occurred. However, Mg2+ was very high in all tissues of Rio Grande at the higher concentration of proline applied. Thus, the foliar spray of proline at 10 mg L-1 increased the tolerance of both cultivars. The growth of aboveground biomass of Heinz-2274 was enhanced by 63.5%, while Rio Grande improved only by 38.9%., B. Kahlaoui, M. Hachicha, S. Rejeb, M. N. Rejeb, B. Hanchi, E. Understanding distribution and transport of carbon assimilates and photosynthesis contribution to grain yield in wheat spike is important in assessing the photosynthetic process under stress conditions. In this study, photosynthetic characteristics were evaluated in a pot experiment. Transport of spike photosynthates to grain was demonstrated using 14C isotope tracer technique. Yield and key enzyme activities of C3 and C4 pathways were examined after anthesis in wheat cultivars of different drought resistance. The ear net photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll content of the spike bracts (glume, lemma, and palea), and relative water content slightly decreased under water deficit in drought resistant variety Pubing 143 (Pub) during the grain filling stage, whereas all parameters decreased significantly in drought sensitive variety Zhengyin 1 (Zhe). Grain 14C-photosynthate distribution rate fell by 3.8% in Pub and increased by 3.9% in Zhe. After harvest, the water-use efficiency of Zhe dropped by 18.7% under water deficit. Rubisco activity in ear organs declined significantly under water deficit, whereas activity of C4 pathway enzymes was significantly enhanced, especially that of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and NADP-malate dehydrogenase. Water deficit exerted lesser influence on spike photosynthesis in Pub. Ear organs exhibited delayed senescence. Accumulation of photosynthetic carbon assimilates in ear bracts occurred mainly during the early grain filling and photosynthates were transported in the middle of grain filling. C4 pathway enzymes seem to play an important function in ear photosynthesis. We speculate that the high enzyme activity of the C4 pathway and the increased capacity of photosynthetic carbon assimilate transport were the reasons for the drought tolerance characteristics of ears., S. Clonal growth is of great importance for survival, growth, expansion, and resource utilization of some species. Knowing how clonal plants respond morphologically and physiologically to different light environments can be useful to explain their occurrence and abundance patterns under specific environmental conditions. Responses of clonal growth, leaf gas exchange, fluorescence emission, and photosynthetic pigment concentrations to different light environments (100, 60, 30, and 15%) were studied in Amomum villosum, grown in the traditional way for economic purpose in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. The results showed that A. villosum attained vigorous clonal growth under 30% and 60% light, with a higher plant height, number of ramets, stolon length, thicker stems and stolons. Shade-grown A. villosum possessed a larger leaf area than that of the sun-grown plants in order to capture more light. For A. villosum, the higher
light-saturated net photosynthetic rate, light-saturation point, larger fresh and dry biomass can explained the better clonal growth for A. villosum under 30% and 60% light. Amomum villosum attained the highest values of minimal chlorophyll fluorescence under 100% light and the lowest values of maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII under 15% light. Our findings indicated that the full irradiance was too strong and 15% light was too weak for A. villosum plants. It was also verified by higher concentrations of photosynthetic pigments in the shaded plants compared to those grown under full sun light. Our results suggested that A. villosum seemed to be adapted to moderate light environment (60-30%) which was indicated by vigorous clonal growth and higher photosynthesis. This information is very useful to select clonal species for rainforest or understory projects. The cultivation of A. villosum in rainforest should not be done under too strong (100%) or too weak light environment (less than 15%)., Y. H. Guo, C. Yuan, L. Tang, J. M. Peng, K. L. Zhang, G. Li, X. a1_The carbon dioxide concentration in free air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) systems typically has rapid fluctuations. In our FACE system, power spectral analysis of CO2 concentration measured every second with an open path analyzer indicated peaks in variation with a period of about one minute. I used
open-top chambers to expose cotton and wheat plants to either a constant elevated CO2 concentration of 180 μmol mol-1 above that of outside ambient air, or to the same mean CO2 concentration, but with the CO2 enrichment cycling between about 30 and 330 μmol mol-1 above the concentration of outside ambient air, with a period of one minute. Three short-term replicate plantings of cotton were grown in Beltsville, Maryland with these CO2 concentration treatments imposed for 27-day periods over two summers, and one winter wheat crop was grown from sowing to maturity. In cotton, leaf gas-exchange measurements of the continuously elevated treatment and the fluctuating treatment indicated that the fluctuating CO2 concentration treatment consistently resulted in substantial down-regulation of net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs). Total shoot biomass of the vegetative cotton plants in the fluctuating CO2 concentration treatment averaged 30% less than in the constantly elevated CO2 concentration treatment at 27 days after planting. In winter wheat, leaf gas-exchange measurements also indicated that down-regulation of PN and gs occurred in flag leaves in the fluctuating CO2 concentration treatment, but the effect was not as consistent in other leaves, nor as severe as found in cotton. However, wheat grain yields were 12% less in the fluctuating CO2 concentration treatment compared with the constant elevated CO2 concentration treatment., a2_Comparison with wheat yields in chambers without CO2 addition indicated a nonsignificant increase of 5% for the fluctuating elevated CO2 concentration treatment, and a significant increase of 19% for the constant elevated treatment. The results suggest that treatments with fluctuating elevated CO2 concentrations could underestimate plant growth at projected future atmospheric CO2 concentrations., J. A. Ramie (Boehmeria nivea L.) is an important crop that serves as fine fiber material, high protein feedstuff, and valuable herbal medicine in China. However, increasing salinity in soil limits the productivity. We investigated in a greenhouse experiment responses to salinity in two ramie cultivars, Chuanzhu-12 (salt-tolerant cultivar, ST) and Xiangzhu-2 (salt-sensitive cultivar, SS), to elucidate the salt tolerance mechanism of this species. Salinity stress substantially reduced both chlorophyll and carotenoid contents. In addition, net photosynthesis, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and the ratio of intercellular CO2 to ambient CO2 were affected, less in ST. Nevertheless, salinity stress markedly improved water use efficiency and intrinsic water use efficiency in both species. Moreover, relative water contents, soluble proteins, and catalase activity were substantially impaired, while proline accumulation and superoxide dismutase activity were enhanced substantially, more in ST. Furthermore, noteworthy increase in peroxidase activity and decrease in malondialdehyde content was recorded in ST, whereas, in SS, these attributes changed conversely. Overall, the cultivar ST exhibited salt tolerance due to its higher photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll content, antioxidative enzyme activity, and nonenzymatic antioxidants, as well as reduced lipid peroxidation and maintenance of the tissue water content. This revealed the salt tolerance mechanism of ramie plants for adaptation to salt affected soil., C.-J. Huang, G. Wei, Y.-C. Jie , J.-J. Xu, S.-Y. Zhao, L.-C. Wang, S. A. In order to test the effects of irrigation depth on winter wheat photosynthesis, four treatments were applied in a field experiment using PVC growth tubes (identical amounts of water were applied on the land surface, and at 60, 75, and 90% of the depth for the winter wheat root distribution, denoted as D0, D60, D75, and D90, respectively). Compared to the surface irrigation treatment D0, the leaf area index, chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO2 concentration increased with irrigation depths. The values of these indicators obtained by the underground irrigation treatment D75 were higher than those of D60 and D90, and thus D75 was found to be the optimum irrigation depth. Furthermore, a positive but not significant correlation (r = 0.62) between carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) and grain yield was found. This study improves our understanding of the mechanism of underground water distribution control with depth, and the efficiency of
water-saving irrigation for winter wheat., L. J. Zheng, J. J. Ma, X. H. Sun, X. H. Guo, J. Jiang, R. Ren, X. L. Zhang., and Obsahuje bibliografii
