The research activities of this Centre are focused on the study of cyanobacteria, algae and symbiotic soil microorganisms (bacteria and algae), which are used for bioindicatoin and revitalization of toxic anthropogenic substrates and water resources. The targeted outcomes are methods for predicting cyanobacteria in drinking wter and water resources, technology of biogas production from algal biomass and the use of algal biomass for the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology of microbial inoculations for more effective recultivation of brown-coal spoil banks. The research Centre is divided into three research groups each dealing with a portion of the research task: Group 1 - Cyanobacteria and their toxins in the waterworks industry; Group 2 - Use of algae for bioindication and revitalization of polluted water and biomass use; Group 3 - Use of microbial inoculations for soil revitalization. and Miroslav Vosátka, Jana Albrechtová.

Článek shrnuje současné názory na vnitrodruhové genetické rozrůznění a taxonomii zmije obecné (Vipera berus). Zvláštní pozornost je věnována genetické příslušnosti populací českých zmijí., This article summarizes contemporary knowledge of the intraspecific genetic differentiation and taxonomy of the Common Adder (Vipera berus). Special attention is paid to the genetic status of the Czech adders., and Jiří Moravec, Jiří Šmíd.
Jeho doposud známé lokality jsou pouze v Čechách a na Slovensku., Species of water fleas that belong to the genus Daphnia have been used intensively in studies as “model organisms”. The discovery of a new Daphnia species in a pool in Central Bohemia was, therefore, a surprise. All known localities of this species, which we named after the prominent Czech hydrobiologist Jaroslav Hrbáček, are restricted to Czechia and Slovakia., and Adam Petrusek, Petr Jan Juračka.
The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of chronic administration of the β-adrenoceptor agonist clenbuterol (2 mg/kg body weight/day for a period of 30 days) on the major contractile protein (myosin) in the left ventricular muscle of the adult mouse heart. Separation of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms on 7.5 % glycerol SDS-PAGE and subsequent quantification of the gels by laser densitometry showed a 6.5-fold increase in the β-isoform of MHC in the clenbuterol-treated group. The α: β ratio of these two isoforms in the control group was 98.16±0.14 %: 1.83±0.14 %, whereas in the treated group it was 88.05±1.15 %: 11.95±1.15 %. Actomyosin ATPase activity assay demonstrated a significant (20 %) decline in ATPase activity of the tissue in the β-agonist-treated group. These results suggest that chronic clenbuterol treatment is capable to induced the transformation of MHC isoforms increasing the slow β-MHC isoform, which may contribute to the altered contractile mechanics of clenbuterol-treated hearts., S.
