Mimořádně významné jsou nálezy mincí, skládacích vážek, kupeckých závaží a pozdně nomádských třmenů. and The article presents the results of the archaeological excavation of the Kostice – Zadní hrúd site, conducted in 2009–2011. The investigated site, 1.5 km from the heart of the nearby Great Moravian centre at Pohansko, lies at the edge of the Dyje (Thaya) River floodplain on a nondescript sand dune. A total of 160 sunken features and two graves from various periods were investigated over the excavated area of 2,405 m2. The majority of finds were from the Early Middle Ages, with the peak of settlement falling between the tenth and twelfth centuries. In the ninth century, the local settlement was part of the subsistence base for the vast Great Moravian agglomeration at Pohansko; following the demise of Pohansko, the Kostice – Zadní hrúd settlement was transformed into a craft-agrarian and trade centre of the second level. Finds of coins, balance scales, merchants’ weights and late nomadic stirrups are of extraordinary importance.
Náplní článku je materiálová analýza unikátního souboru mincí z druhé pol. 10. stol. z lokality Kostice – Zadní hrúd. Aplikovány byly dvě hlavní metody EDX a hydrostatické stanovení hustoty kovu. Zjištěné výsledky jsou interpretovány v rámci současného numismatického diskursu. Stranou nezůstala ani diskuse o technických omezeních použitých metod a jejich věrohodnosti. and The article involves a material analysis of a unique assemblage of coins from the second half of the tenth century from the Kostice – Zadní hrúd site in the Czech Republic. The two main methods of EDX and hydrostatic weighing were employed, and the results are interpreted within the contemporary numismatic discourse. The credibility and technical limitations of the employed methods are likewise discussed.
Ukazujeme však, že struktury moravské moci, hospodářství a společenských vztahů byly, přinejmenším v posledních čtyřech deceniích 9. století, příliš komplexní a institučně příliš pevně ustanovené, než aby se při jejich interpretaci mohl s prospěchem použít model cyklického náčelnictví. and The article is a discussion regarding the new concept put forward by Jiří Macháček, which attempts to use the cyclical chiefdom model for the unit called Great Moravia. The article shows that the author has disregarded the testament of written sources as well as some new archaeological findings. It is not necessary to call medieval Moravia a state. It is however shown that the structures of the Moravian powers, and economical and social relations were, at least in the last four decades of the 9th century, too complex and too strongly constituted institutionally for the cyclical chiefdom model to have been successfully used during interpretations.
This paper discusses the pottery finds from the 2003–2005 excavation of the settlement at Pellendorf/Gaweinstal in the central eastern area of the Weinviertel district in Lower Austria. The early medieval settlement was occupied from the 7th to the 10th centuries. The pottery finds from the 9th/10th century are characterised by shapes typical of the Mikulčice and Blučina pottery groups and of the March pottery in southern Moravia, and thus revealing intensive contact to the Great Moravian centres on the River March in that period. The paper also mentions further sites with the same pottery in northern Lower Austria, which, taken as a whole, indicate that in the 9th century the area was culturally, economically, and thus presumably also politically, closely connected to the Moravian Empire. and Výzkum sídlištní lokality Pellendorf/Gaweinstal ležící ve středu východní části oblasti Weinviertel (Dolní Rakousko) poskytl v letech 2003–2005 keramický materiál, který je diskutován v předložené studii. V celkovém pohledu tento nálezový inventář svědčí o úzkém kulturním, ekonomickém, a patrně i politickém propojení příslušných oblastí Dolního Rakouska s Velkou Moravou v 9. století.
