Ústav pro jazyk český vznikl v roce 1946 podstatným rozšířením Kanceláře Slovníku jazyka českého coby komplexní bohemistické pracoviště, věnující se jazykovědnému výzkumu i všestranné péči o český jazyk. V roce 1952 byl začleněn do struktur nově ustavené Československé akademie věd a její součástí zůstal až do roku 1992, kdy byla existence ČSAV završena. Organizační struktura ÚJČ, o níž především článek pojednává, procházela velkým množstvím změn, které byly dány nejen aktuálními vědeckými potřebami, ale také politicky motivovanými pohnutkami tehdejší doby. Ovlivňováno tak bylo personální obsazení ÚJČ, lokalizace jednotlivých oddělení i jejich materiální a technické zabezpečení. Markantním příkladem byly rozsáhlé personální změny, vyplývající z událostí v Československu v roce 1968, zánik některých oddělení v sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech či nutnost postoupení rozsáhlých, pro jazykovědné bádání již adaptovaných, prostor Ústavu marxismu-leninismu., The Institute of the Czech Language (‘Ustav pro jazyk cesky’, UJC) was established in 1946 in a significant extension of the Office for Dictionary of the Czech Language (‘Kancelar Slovniku jazyka ceskeho’) as a comprehensive worksite for Czech studies, providing linguistic analysis as well as bearing wide competence for the Czech language. In 1952 it was made part of the newly established Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and remained so until 1992 when the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences ceased to exist. The organisational structure of the UJC, which this paper is primarily about, underwent countless changes which reflected not only the contemporary needs of sciences but also politically motivated reasons of the time. This affected not just the staffing situation of the UJC, placement of divisions and their material and technical equipment. A serious example were large-scale personnel changes resulting from the events of 1968 in Czechoslovakia, the dissolution of some divisions in the 1970’s and 1980’s, or the instruction to convey large premises allocated to linguistic research to the Institute of Marxism and Leninism.
