To establish the importance of different cues for feeding site location in aphids, two birch-feeding species were given access to leaves that were either orientated normally or inverted. Euceraphis betulae used gravity and/or light as the main cue, and settled on the surface that was orientated down. Monaphis antennata additionally used leaf surface features to locate its feeding site, and approximately half of the individuals settled on the correct feeding surface whatever its orientation. This is one of the few examples of positive stimuli being used by aphids during feeding site location.
Coccinellids are effective predators and a key component of the predator guild in rice ecosystems. In order to enhance their efficacy, a study was undertaken to assess the seasonal movement of coccinellids into rice fields and the role of the surrounding flora on their colonization. The seasonal abundance of coccinellids and their prey was recorded on the rice crop and the surrounding flora at fortnightly intervals from 2012 to 2015. Coccinellid prey range was assessed using PAGE electrophoresis. The herbivorous insects associated with weeds were Aphis gossypii Glover, Aphis craccivora (Koch), Cicadulina bipunctata (Melichar), Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), Sitobion sp., Thaia oryzivora Ghauri and Zygina maculifrons Matsumura. Of the species of coccinellids recorded in rice fields, Harmonia octomaculata (Fabricius), Micraspis discolor (F.), Propylea dissecta (Mulsant), Coccinella transversalis Fabricius, Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius), Scymnus nubilus Mulsant and Brumoides suturalis (Fabricius) were also recorded on weeds. The esterase profiles indicated that the leafhoppers and aphids on the weeds were the prey of the coccinellids before they colonized the rice fields. The coccinellids recorded on the weeds showed bands corresponding to the insects present on the weeds. Beetles collected from rice fields had different bands, some of which corresponded to the green leafhopper (GLH) Nephotettix virescens Distant, the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens Stal and white backed planthopper (WBPH) Sogatella furcifera Hovarth infesting rice. In addition, some bands corresponded to hoppers and aphids that were present on the surrounding flora. Monoctonus paulensis is a solitary parasitoid of several species of aphids, including the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. We evaluated host-instar selection by comparing the parasitoid's preference for the four nymphal instars of the pea aphid, presented two at a time in dichotomous choice tests. Females parasitized more, and laid more eggs in, the relatively smaller aphids among those available. This preference was independent of aphid instar: L1 > L2 > L3 > L4. Preference was not influenced by female size or age. Normal and anaesthetized aphids were accepted equally. The total time needed by a female to capture, position, and parasitize an aphid varied among host instars, with fourth instars requiring nearly twice as much time as first, second, and third instars. The probability of an attacked aphid escaping or avoiding parasitism increased with aphid instar, from ~10% in first and second instars to ~50% in fourth instars. Although fourth-instar pea aphids contain more resources for offspring development than smaller counterparts, it may not be profitable for a female to invest opportunity time in attacks on large aphids.
The effects of the larval tracks of Episyrphus balteatus DeGeer (Diptera: Syrphidae) and Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on the egg laying behavior of females of the predatory hoverfly E. balteatus were investigated in two-choice experiments. The oviposition response of H. axyridis to larval tracks of E. balteatus was also tested in one-choice experiments. Gravid E. balteatus females laid significantly fewer eggs on leaf discs with aphids and contaminated with tracks of conspecific or heterospecific larvae than on control leaf discs. H. axyridis females laid similar numbers of eggs in Petri dishes with aphids and contaminated with the tracks of E. balteatus larvae as in control Petri dishes. This indicates that E. balteatus females lay fewer eggs at sites where there are conspecific and heterospecific larval tracks, whereas the tracks of the syrphid larvae did not deter H. axyridis females from laying eggs.
The research on pre-diapause feeding of C. septempunctata L. adults was carried out from 1998 to 2002 in the Tiber Valley, in the Botanical Garden of Perugia University, and in the Sibillini Mountains National Park (Central Italy). The species reproduces in spring feeding mostly on aphids infesting Graminaceae. In the second half of June, newly emerged adults have various migratory behaviours. Some of them remain in the valley while some leave the cereals and fly to other crops, where they feed both on 15 aphid species (e.g., Aphis gossypii Glov. on melon, Aphis fabae Scop. on sugarbeet), and also on pollens of wild plants such as Carduus nutans L., and fungi spores. However, most of the adults migrate to mountain pastures to find different food sources. During this migration, strong south-western storms often force the ladybirds to shelter in urban habitats. When the sunny weather returns again, due to the mistral (north-western wind), the adults continue the flight in swarms to mountain areas. In 1999, on Mt. Vettore (2478 m) we witnessed a "shower" of ladybirds, some of which hid in the turf. When reaching high altitude locations still covered with snow (Lake Pilato, 1940 m, on Mt. Vettore), the adults, exhausted by the long flight, usually remain motionless on the snow. Due to the warming of the sun they sink to a depth of 5-6 cm, so that they remain trapped in the frozen snow during the night. At this site C. septempunctata was found together with Vibidia duodecimguttata (Poda) and Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say). We investigated the gut content of adults from this location. After aggregation, the hungry adults disperse to flowering plants at lower elevations where they feed on 8 aphid species (e.g. broom aphid) and pollens of several plants (e.g., Laserpitium garganicum Tem., Centaurea rupestris L., Cachrys ferulacea L. The first mating was observed on broom. At "Pian Grande" location, adults were found in crop fields (lentil, mustard) and wild pastures (cornflower, gentian) mating and feeding on aphids, pollens, nectar and fungal spores. Haymaking forces ladybirds to move towards higher locations in search of food. Echinops ritro L., Eryngium amethystinum L., Carlina acaulis L., Cirsium eriophorum (L.), Galium verum L. and Euphorbia cyparissias L. were major food sources at 1800 m altitude. Gut content of C. septempunctata adults showed that pre-diapause diet consisted of aphids, pollen of Compositae and Umbelliferae, and spores of fungi (e.g., Alternaria spp., Cladosporium spp.). There was no statistical difference between the number of adults containing remains of aphids, fungal spores, and pollens. We found four significant correlations between the different food sources observed. In August some adults stopped feeding and in diapause condition sheltered under stones and among leaves or seed capsules of plants where they had fed. Others migrated to nearby woods and aggregated between juniper needles.
The oviposition deterring effects of fresh larval tracks of Cheilomenes sexmaculata (F.), Ceratomegilla undecimnotata (Schneider), Cycloneda limbifer Casey, and Harmonia dimidiata (F.) on C. sexmaculata females were compared in standard laboratory choice tests. Moreover, the persistence of intraspecific effects of C. sexmaculata larval tracks were investigated. Fresh tracks of C. sexmaculata, C. limbifer and C. undecimnotata larvae effectively deterred C. sexmaculata females from ovipositing. The effect of fresh larval tracks of H. dimidiata was not statistically significant. The oviposition-deterring effects of 10 d-old conspecific larval tracks were considerably lower than those of fresh tracks, but remained significant. Clutch sizes were smaller in the blank test without larval tracks than in choice tests with fresh tracks of conspecific, C. limbifer, C. undecimnotata, H. dimidiata larvae and with 10 d-old tracks of conspecific larvae. The study indicates that semiochemicals in the tracks of conspecific and heterospecific coccinellid larvae can contribute considerably to the spacing of C. sexmaculata offspring among prey resources of differing quality and that conspecific as well as heterospecific larval tracks can influence clutch size.
The ladybird beetle, Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius), has been extending its distribution in and around urban areas at higher latitudes in Japan over the past 100 years. Between 2003 and 2011, we investigated the seasonal occurrence, aphid prey and population dynamics of this species in an urban park in Osaka City, central Japan. We found that C. sexmaculata completes three generations a year in Osaka. Overwintered adults emerge in March or April and produce two (or rarely one) generations by summer. Second-generation adults aestivate and subsequently produce another generation in autumn. This species feeds on five species of aphids that infest planted shrubs and alien weeds throughout the vegetative season. We analyzed the association between accumulated temperature and when overwintered adults first emerged. In addition, we determined the association between their time of emergence, peak abundance and last occurrence, and meteorological conditions. There was no association between the sum of effective temperatures and termination of adult overwintering. There was, however, an association between first occurrence and peak abundance, and climatic conditions, such as warm temperatures or low humidity. This species maintained a stable population in an urban park by becoming quiescent when climatic conditions were unfavourable or prey was scarce. Geoica wertheimae induces spherical galls on its primary host, Pistacia palaestina (Anacardiaceae). We studied the temporal changes in gall size and aphid clone size, as well as gall distribution and abundance on marked trees during two consecutive years. The density of galls (per shoot and per leaf) was low during the study period, and gall distribution was clumped. Gall abundance varied greatly among trees, but gall abundance and tree budburst phenology were uncorrelated. Galls increased eight-fold in volume during the season, in parallel with the increase in aphid clone size, from one individual to several hundred aphids per gall. The trigger for the induction of the alate morph in the galls in late summer seems to be an abrupt change in aphid density within the galls, which occurs when aphid reproductive rate exceeds the rate of change in gall internal surface area.
Two species of Lepidopterous larvae were present in about one-third of the galls. They occasionally destroyed the aphid clone, but many aphids often remained alive. However, the volume of parasitized galls was significantly smaller than that of unparasitized galls, illustrating the dependence of gall size on aphid clone size.
The aim of this study was to clarify the diet of Ceratomegilla notata (Laicharting), a common species in different mountain habitats of the Palearctic region. In Italy it is found only in alpine ecosystems between 800-1700 m. In these areas, up to 1200 m, various crops (e.g., maize, potatoes) are present. The high meadows are cut for hay. From 2002 to 2003 investigations on the foraging behaviour of this ladybird were carried out in mountain habitats (six near Villabassa, in Bolzano province, and six near Soraga, in Trento province) and in the "Paradisia" Botanic Garden (Gran Paradiso National Park). C. notata adults and larvae were found on the flowering plants, especially those infested by aphids. The study of their diet was done taking random D-Vac samples of 20 adults and 20 larvae/habitat every 15 days, between July and September. The influence of the haymaking on C. notata populations was also evaluated.
In agricultural fields the ladybirds prey on Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), R. padi (L.) on maize and on Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) and Therioaphis luteola (Born.) on Trifolium pratense L. In the natural pastures, adults and larvae feed on Cavariella theobaldi G. & B. found on Heracleum sphondylium (Umbelliferae), Sitobion avenae L. on Avena sativa L., Megoura viciae (B.) and A. pisum on Vicia cracca L., Uroleucon jaceae (L.) on Cirsium arvense Scop., U. cichorii (Koch) on Hypochaeris radicata L. and Macrosiphum weberi Born. on Scabiosa sp. A study of the gut contents revealed the presence of aphids, Umbelliferae pollens and spores of fungi (e.g., Alternaria spp., Helminthosporium spp., Puccinia spp.). Statistically significant associations between different food sources were more frequent for adults than for larvae in both 2002 and 2003. Thrips are an important prey of this ladybird in the absence of aphids. C. notata is an important aphidophagous species in Alpine habitats.
Aphids play an important role in the life of many ant species supplying them with energy-rich carbohydrate food and in exchange receiving some degree of protection from natural enemies. This study focused on the degree of protection different ants provide myrmecophilous aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in multispecies ant communities. Field investigations were carried out in steppe and forest plant associations in Siberia. The potential level of aggressiveness of six ant species (Formica rufa Linnaeus, F. pratensis Retzius, Lasius fuliginosus (Latreille), L. niger (Linnaeus), Camponotus saxatilis Ruzsky and Myrmica rubra Linnaeus) towards imagines and larvae of ladybirds and lacewings and larvae of hoverflies was tested in the laboratory. A comparative analysis of the occurrence of aphidophages in colonies of the aphid Chaitophorus populeti Panzer and of all aphid-symbionts tended by different ants in the study area has shown that the degree of protection of myrmecophilous aphids from natural enemies significantly differs among ants and is positively correlated with ant colony size. On the whole, the degree of protection of myrmecophilous aphids from aphidophages depends both on the potential level of aggressiveness of ants and their foraging strategy when collecting honeydew (degree of specialisation among honeydew collectors). As the dominant ants Formica s. str. were the most aggressive and provided aphids with the highest degree of protection, we suppose that these ants have the most important influence on the survival of the symbionts in multispecies ant communities whereas the other ants, which live in small colonies of about 102–103 workers, appear at least partially to take advantage of the mutualistic relationships of the dominant ants., Tatiana A.
