It is well known that the mammalian uterine tube (UT) plays a crucial role in female fertility, where the most important events leading to successful fertilization and pre-implantation embryo development occur. The known functions of these small intraabdominal organs are: an uptake and transport of oocytes; storage, transportation, and capacitation of spermatozoa, and finally fertilization and transport of the fertilized ovum and early embryo through the isthmus towards the uterotubal junction. The success of all these events depends on the interaction between the uterine tube epithelium (UTE) and gametes/embryo. Besides that, contemporary research revealed that the tubal epithelium provides essential nutritional support and the most suitable environment for early embryo development. Moreover, recent discoveries in molecular biology help understand the role of the epithelium at the cellular and molecular levels, highlighting the factors involved in regulating the UT signaling, that affects different steps in the fertilization process. According to the latest research, the extracellular vesicles, as a major component of tubal secretion, mediate the interaction between gametes/embryo and epithelium. This review aims to provide up-to-date knowledge on various aspects concerning tubal epithelium activity and its cross-talk with spermatozoa, oocytes and preimplantation embryo and how these interactions affect fertilization and early embryo development.
The article The Human Embryo from a Bioethical Perspective devotes in detail to the contemporary bioethical discussion on the moral status of the human embryo. First, it rises an issue whether a human embryo is an individual being of a human kind since the moment of fertilization and it critically assesses some objections against individuality of the human embryo. Following that it focuses on criteria of personal identity and its relevance for bioethical discussion. It critically deals with the so called constitutionalism. Metaphysical reflection is concluded by a defense of animalism. The last part of the article evaluates ethical relativism, utilitarianism and brings in an outline of an ethical theory of John M. Finnis. The conclusion of the work consists of the thesis that the human embryo is a human being since the moment of its creation, abounding in inherent, inalienable human rights. and Článek Lidské embryo v perspektivě bioetiky se podrobně věnuje současné bioetické diskuzi o morálním statusu lidského embrya. What is the status of an embryo and a foetus? This question has been always the object of interest not only to lawyers but also to experts in other disciplines. Despite the fact, that knowledge about the circumstances of the origin and development of human life during the prenatal period has greatly expanded, there is still no consensus on that, when and why each of us once became a person and a holder of rights. The intention of this article is not to provide a wide range of individual philosophical or legal approaches to the problem, but to perform a definition of the legal status of an embryo and a foetus in the Czech Republic, with the focus on the specifics of its legal protection. and Jaký je status embrya a plodu? Tato otázka je od nepaměti objektem zájmu nejen právníků, ale také odborníků z jiných vědních oborů. Přestože se znalosti ohledně okolností vzniku a vývoje lidského života během prenatálního období díky technologickému pokroku značně rozšířily, stále neexistuje shoda ohledně toho, kdy a na základě jakých kritérií se každý z nás stal kdysi osobou a nositelem práv. Záměrem tohoto článku není poskytnout širokou škálu jednotlivých filozofických či právních přístupů, ale vymezit základní východiska právního postavení embrya a plodu v českém trestním a občanském právu, a to se zaměřením na rozsah a specifika jeho právní ochrany.
