Its high oxidant capacity and ability to generate reactive oxygen species cause ozone toxicity. We studied the effect of ambient ozone on chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate contents, and lipid peroxidation in potatoes grown in open-top chambers in the field. In plants grown in non-filtered air (NFA), the development of non-photochemical quenching brought about a decrease in photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency. Also the ability of PS2 to reduce the primary acceptor QA was lower than in charcoal-filtered, ozone-free air (CFA). Changes in Chl fluorescence yield were associated with changes in the thylakoid membrane. Ozone altered chloroplast membrane properties, as indicated by an increase in membrane lipid peroxidation in FNA-leaves compared to CFA plants. The ascorbate pool and activities of antioxidant enzymes were used for an indication of the detoxification system state in NFA and CFA leaves, whereby ozone affects the ascorbate concentration and decreases the antioxidant enzymes activities. The capacity of both detoxifying systems together was not high enough to protect potato plants against ambient ozone concentrations which reduced the photosynthetic yield in this potato cultivar. and A. Calatayud, J. W. Alvarado, E. Barreno.
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Pearson) plants were grown in growth chambers for 25 days with cadmium (Cd) and then exposed briefly to ozone (O3). Gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and pigment composition were analysed in leaves at the end of the treatment to assess the effects of a single pollutant and their combination on photosynthesis. The CO2 assimilation rate was dramatically reduced in plants subjected to the combined treatment, while the single effect of Cd appeared less severe than that of O3. The decline of CO2 photoassimilation found in all
O3-exposed plants was attributed to both stomatal and nonstomatal limitations. Tomato plants seemed to detoxify Cd to a great extent, but this resulted in growth suppression. In response to O3 exposure, the plants protected their photosystems by heat dissipation of excess energy via the xanthophyll cycle. Cd combined with O3 affected adversely this cycle resulting in an increase in photosynthetic performance under the same experimental light conditions., E. Degl’Innocenti, A. Castagna, A. Ranieri, L. Guidi., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The effects of long-term exposure to ozone (O3, 60 mm3 m-3 for 5 h d-1) on some Calvin cycle enzymes, in particular those modulated by the thioredoxin system, were studied in two poplar clones. These clones differ in sensitivity to O3. In the I-214 clone, the first effects from O3 treatment were seen after 40 d of fumigation, while the Eridano clone showed visible symptoms of damage after only 15 d of the treatment. Specific activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (E.C. 4.1.1.39) diminished in both the clones, while specific activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (E.C. 4.1.1.31) increased. Exposure to O3 also caused a reduction in the specific activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate kinase (E.C. 2.7.1.19) in both clones. At the end of the exposure to O3, specific activity of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.2.1.13) increased in I-214 and remained similar to the control in Eridano, whereas specific activity of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.11) was higher in Eridano and similar to the control in I-214. and E. Degl'Innocenti, L. Guidi, G. F. Soldatini.
Three-years-old trees of Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu [Mak.] Marc.) cv. Okitsu were exposed to O3 fumigation during long term (one year) in open-top chambers. As a result of the treatment, chlorophyll a fluorescence and gas exchange parameters were modified with respect to trees growing in O3-free conditions. Net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance decreased and intercellular CO2 concentration increased according to a reduction of the non-cyclic electron flow and a lower capacity to reduce the quinone pool. O3 also reduced the development of non-photochemical quenching preventing the dissipation of excess excitation energy and, therefore, generated several alterations in photosynthetic apparatus. All these effects were obtained in long-term exposure and higher O3 concentration. In O3 ambient conditions, the effects were minor. and A. Calatayud ... [et al.].
Little is known about the response of trees to elevated ozone (O3) in the subtropical region of China, where ambient O3 concentrations are high enough to damage plants. In this study, pigment content, gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence in leaves of Liriodendron chinense (Hemsl.) Sarg seedlings, a deciduous broadleaf tree species native in subtropical regions, were investigated at 15, 40, and 58 days after O3 fumigation (DAF) at a concentration of 150 mm3 m-3 (E-O3). At the end of experiment, seedlings were harvested for biomass measurement. E-O3 caused visible injuries on the mature leaves e.g. necrotic patches and accelerated early defoliation. Relative to the charcoal-filtered air (CF) treatment, E-O3 significantly decreased shoot and root biomass, pigment content, light-saturated net photosynthesis (P Nsat), stomatal conductance (gs), maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax), photochemical quenching coefficient (qp) and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), and also caused a slight reduction in relative increase of basal diameter. Therefore, L. chinense can be assumed to be an O3-sensitive tree species, which will be threatened by increasing ambient O3 concentrations in China. and W. W. Zhang ... [et al.].
Seedlings of spring barley, meadow fescue, and winter rape were fumigated with 180 μg kg-1 of ozone for 12 d, and effect of O3 on photosynthesis and cell membrane permeability of fumigated plants was determined. Electrolyte leakage and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured after 6, 9, and 12 d of fumigation, while net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) were measured 9 d after the start of ozone exposure. O3 treatment did not change membrane permeability in fescue and barley leaves, while in rape a significant decrease in ion leakage was noted within the whole experiment. O3 did not change the photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2), i.e., Fv/Fm, and the initial fluorescence (F0). The values of half-rise time (t1/2) from F0 to maximal fluorescence (Fm) decreased in fescue and barley after 6 and 9 d of fumigation. PN decreased significantly in ozonated plants, in the three species. The greatest decrease in PN was observed in ozonated barley plants (17 % of the control). The ozone-induced decrease in PN was due to the closure of stomata. Rape was more resistant to ozone than fescue or barley. Apparently, the rape plants show a large adaptation to ozone and prevent loss of membrane integrity leading to ion leakage. and A. Plażek, M. Rapacz. A. Skoczowski.
To understand the interactive effects of O3 and CO2 on rice leaves; gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, ascorbic acid and glutathione were examined under acute (5 h), combined exposures of O3 (0, 0.1, or 0.3 cm3 m-3, expressed as O0, O0.1, or O0.3, respectively), and CO2 (400 or 800 cm3 m-3, expressed as C400 or C800, respectively) in natural-light gas-exposure chambers. The net photosynthetic rate (PN), maximum (Fv/Fm) and operating (Fq'/Fm') quantum efficiencies of photosystem II (PSII) in young (8th) leaves decreased during O3 exposure. However, these were ameliorated by C800 and fully recovered within 3 d in clean air (O0 + C400) except for the O0.3 + C400 plants. The maximum PSII efficiency at 1,500 μmol m-2 s-1 PPFD (Fv'/Fm') for the O0.3 + C400 plants decreased for all measurement times, likely because leaves with severely inhibited PN also had a severely damaged PSII. The
PN of the flag (16th) leaves at heading decreased under O3 exposure, but the decline was smaller and the recovery was faster than that of the 8th leaves. The Fq'/Fm' of the flag leaves in the O0.3 + C400 and O0.3 + C800 plants decreased just after gas exposure, but the Fv/Fm was not affected. These effects indicate that elevated CO2 interactively ameliorated the inhibition of photosynthesis induced by O3 exposure. However, changes in antioxidant levels did not explain the above interaction. and H. Kobayakawa, K. Imai.
The effects of foliar spraying of the dithiocarbamate zineb on two cultivars of tomato grown in the field in a site with high ozone concentrations were studied by means of biomass assessment, antioxidant enzyme assays, lipid peroxidation, and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Zineb prevented the peroxidation of membrane lipids and decreased the activity of scavenging enzymes, which suggests that plants sprayed with zineb are subjected to lower oxidative stress than controls. The beneficial effects of zineb protection is the utilization of a larger fraction of absorbed radiant energy in photosynthesis and a larger fruit yield in plants of both cultivars. and Á. Calatayud, E. Barreno.
a1_Attention should be paid to ozone (O3) sensitivity of greening plant since ground-level O3 concentrations are increasing especially in urban and suburban area. We studied the ecophysiological responses to elevated O3 of four shrub species [Euonymus bungeanus Maxim. (EB), Photinia × fraseri (PF), Chionanthus retusus Lindl. & Paxt. (CR) and Cornus alba L. (CA)], which are often used for garden greening in China. Saplings of those species were exposed to high O3 concentration (70 nmol mol-1, 7 h d-1 for 65 d) in open-top growth chambers. Responses to O3 were assessed by gas exchanges, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and dry mass. We found that elevated O3 significantly decreased lightsaturated net photosynthetic rate (PNsat), transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance (gs). The ratio of intercellular CO2 to ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca) did not reduce under O3 fumigation which suggested that the O3-induced depressions of P Nsat under O3 fumigation were probably due to limitation of mesophyll processes rather than stomatal limitation. High O3 exposure also significantly depressed the maximum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry in the dark-adapted state (Fv/Fm) which meant the O3-induced photoinhibition. Both root dry mass and root/shoot ratios were significantly decreased under ozone fumigation, but the total mass was unchanged. The responses of gas exchange such as PNsat in these four shrubs to O3 exposure were species-specific. Highest loss of PNsat was observed in EB (-49.6%), while the CR had the lowest loss (-36.5%). Moreover, the O3-exposed CR showed similar gs as CF, reflecting that its O3 flux might be unchanged under elevated O3 environment. Ozone drastically decreased actual quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) and electron transport rate (ETR) in EB while increased ΦPSII and ETR in CR., a2_Furthermore, the relative losses in P Nsat positively correlated with the relative decreases in ΦPSII and ETR which indicated that the impairment of photosynthesis was probably affected by the light reaction process. The light reaction of EB was impaired most seriously but that of CR was not damaged. All results indicated that EB was probably the most sensitive shrub species to O3 while CR the most tolerant one. Therefore, CR might be an ideal choice for greening in ozone-polluted areas., L. Zhang ... [et al.]., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Měkčí UV-A záření (315-400 nm) z velké části prochází až k povrchu, takže UV záření u povrchu sestává v podstatě z UV-A záření s jen pár procenty UV-B záření.
