Cuttings of Populus cathayana Rehd, originating from three triploid and one diploid populations with the same parents but different gamete origins, were used to examine physiological responses to drought stress and rewatering by exposure to three progressive water regimes. Progressive drought stress significantly decreased the leaf relative water content (RWC), photosynthesis, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and increased the relative electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA), free proline (Pro), and antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase, in the four populations evaluated. However, compared to the diploid population, triploid populations showed lower relative electrolyte leakage and MDA, higher RWC and Pro content, and more efficient photosynthesis and antioxidant systems under the same water regime. Our data indicated that triploid populations possessed more efficient protective mechanisms than that of diploid population with gradually increasing drought stress. Fifty-d-old poplar (Populus deltoides L.) plants were irrigated with 50-200 mM NaCl. 100 and 200 mM NaCl significantly reduced net photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, leaf area, dry matter accumulation, and harvest index (HI) in all tested poplar clones (Bahar, S7C15, and WSL22). The relationships between drought response and anatomical/physiological properties were assessed in two poplar clones belonging to the Aigeros section: Populusxeuramericana clone Dorskamp (drought-tolerant) and clone Luisa Avanzo (drought-sensitive). Cuttings of both clones were exposed for 12 h to 0 mM (control). 50 mM (osmotic potential -0.112 MPa), and 150 mM (-0.336 MPa) mannitol. In control, Dorskamp had smaller stomata than Luisa Avanzo, one or two layers of palisade cells, a spongy mesophyll, and high concentrations of antioxidative compounds (ascorbate, glutathione). After exposure to 50 or 150 mM mannitol, both clones closed their stomata: leaf conductance and opening of stomata decreased. When exposed to 50 mM mannitol, net photosynthetic rate (PN) and chlorophyll (Chl) and total solute contents remained stable; ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/-oxygenase activity, Chl synthesis and turn-over, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities were less affected in Dorskamp than in Luisa Avanzo. Following an exposure to 150 mM mannitol, Dorskamp exhibited higher PN and higher contents of antioxidants (ascorbate, glutathione) and antioxidative enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase) than Luisa Avanzo. This study compared the effects of salt (NaCl) stress on growth, photosynthesis and solute accumulation in seedlings of the three poplar (Populus bonatii) cultivars Populus × BaiLin-2 (BL-2), Populus × BaiLin-3 (BL-3), and Populus × Xjiajiali (XJJL). The results showed that BL-2 and BL-3 could not survive at a salinity level of 200 mM but XJJL grew well. The effect of moderate salt stress on leaf extension of the three cultivars was only slight. At a high level of salinity, however, NaCl clearly inhibited leaf extension of BL-2 and BL-3, whereas it did not affect that of XJJL, and the net photosynthetic rate (PN) in XJJL was much higher than those of BL-2 and BL-3. The lower PN of BL-2 and BL-3 might be associated with the high concentration of Na+ and/or Cl- accumulated in the leaves, which could be toxic in photosynthesis system. In summary, the greater salt-tolerance of XJJL compared with that of BL-2 and BL-3 might be explained by the higher PN and photosynthetic area, the lower Na+/K- ratio and Cl- in the leaf, and the greater accumulation of soluble sugars and SO4 2-. and W. Poplars (Populus spp.) are widely used in the pulp and paper industry and as bioenergy resources. Poplars require a large amount of water for biomass accumulation and lack of water is a limiting factor for poplar growth. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have been previously reported to afford some plant species with greater resistance to drought stress. However, the effects of AM fungi on hybrid poplar under drought stress and recovery have not been studied. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the AM fungus, Rhizophagus irregularis, on the growth, water status, chlorophyll (Chl) content and fluorescence, and photosynthesis of poplar seedlings. The experiment was divided into three stages. At each stage of the experiment, the seedlings were subjected to a different watering regime: well-watered (prior stress), drought, and then rewatering (recovery). Measurements were taken at the end of each stage of the experiment. The results showed that mycorrhizal plants had a higher net photosynthetic rate and Chl fluorescence compared with nonmycorrhizal plants, regardless of the stage. Mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants showed different responses to drought stress: mycorrhizal plants showed better water-use efficiency and water uptake under drought stress conditions. Morphological and ecophysiological traits showed by male and female Populus tomentosa Carr. trees were studied under various degrees of water and alkaline stresses. The results showed that different adaptations to drought and alkaline stresses were adopted by each gender; males possessed a much higher tolerance to both stresses compared to females. In contrast to females, the males exhibited a lower inhibition in total biomass, total leaf area, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, leaf carbon and nitrogen concentrations as well as water- and nitrogen-use efficiency in response to drought and alkaline stresses. Nevertheless, compared to the males, the females showed a higher plasticity in root biomass/shoot biomass ratio, fine root/coarse root ratio, and intrinsic water-use efficiency, indicating that the males and females differed in some of trade-offs between growth and stress defence to maximize water and nitrogen gains under both stress conditions., Y. The riparian forests along the Tarim River, habitats for Populus euphratica establishment, are subjected to frequent flooding. To elucidate adaptive strategies that enable this species to occupy the riparian ecosystem subjected to seasonal or permanent water-logging, we examined functional characteristics of plant growth, xylem water relations, leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) content and fluorescence, soluble sugar and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in P. euphratica seedlings flooded for 50 d. Although flooded seedlings kept absorbing carbon throughout the experiment, their shoot and root growth rates were lower than in non-flooded seedlings. The reduced leaf gas exchange and quantum efficiency of PSII of flooded seedlings resulted possibly from the reduction in total Chl content. Content of soluble sugar and malondialdehyde in leaves were higher in flooded than in control seedlings. Soil flooding induced hypertrophy of lenticels and increased a stem diameter. These responses were responsible for species survival as well as its success in this seasonally flooded riparian zone. Our results indicate that P. euphratica is relatively flood-tolerant due to a combination of morphological, physiological, and biochemical adjustments, which may support its dominance in the Tarim riparian forest., B. In the bark of Populus tremula L. photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) determined as Fv/Fm decreased during winter. The strongest reduction was found after cold periods. The degree of reduction depended on irradiance since the lowest levels of Fv/Fm were found on the sun-exposed side of the stem and below thin phellem. Therefore, photoinhibition was partly responsible for the reduction in Fv/Fm. The photochemical efficiency of PS2 recovered in late April about a month before the trees got leaves. In the laboratory, Fv/Fm recovered within about a week under low irradiance at 20 °C. Rapid recovery of photochemical efficiency of PS2 in the bark may be important to reduce respiratory loss of CO2 from the stem before the trees get leaves. and K. A. Solhaug, J. Haugen.
As a common tree species in northern China, Populus × euramericana "Neva" has an important practical value for the study of continuous cropping obstacles in poplar cultivation. Plant allelopathy is the main reason for continuous cropping obstacles, which are caused by allelochemicals, such as para-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HB). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of p-HB on the photosynthesis of poplar. Photosynthetic parameters of Populus × euramericana "Neva" poplar were determined in a pot culture experiment where five p-HB concentrations were used (0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 mmol L−1). Each seedling was treated with 4 L of p-HB solution every seven days, ten times in total. p-HB inhibited the photosynthesis of poplar significantly, as shown by a clear decline in the net photosynthetic rate.
