The neotropical genus Clusia comprises arborescent species exhibiting Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) as was first reported for a Mexican species, Clusia lundellii. Here, the occurrence of CAM photosynthesis was studied in 20 species of Clusia, 18 from Mexico, and 2 from Guatemala, using leaf carbon isotopic composition. In most species, samples from individuals collected in different locations were analyzed. CAM was present in at least 11 species, eight of which contained specimens with δ13C values less negative than -20.0 ‰, indicating strong CAM (C. chanekiana, C. flava, C. lundellii, C. mexicana, C. quadrangula, C. rosea, C. suborbicularis, and C. tetra-trianthera). δ13C was highly variable in some species, but CAM expression was not correlated to life form (epiphytic, hemiepiphytic, terrestrial) or habitat. E. Prisner in his book Graph Dynamics defines the k-path-step operator on the class of finite graphs. The k-path-step operator (for a positive integer k) is the operator S' k which to every finite graph G assigns the graph S' k(G) which has the same vertex set as G and in which two vertices are adjacent if and only if there exists a path of length k in G connecting them. In the paper the trees and the unicyclic graphs fixed in the operator S' 3 are studied.
Examination of freshwater fishes from the Parana River in southern Brazil during March 1992, revealed the presence of two new, previously undescribed species of the genus Goezia: G. brasiliensis sp. n. is described from the stomach of Brycon hilarii (family Characidae) (type host) and the intestine of Pseudoplatystoma coruscans (Pimelodidae) and it is characterized mainly by the length (0.802 mm) of spicules, number and arrangement of male caudal papillae (10 pairs of preanals and 4 pairs of postanals) and body measurements (male 11 mm, female 10-16 mm); the main characteristics of G. brevicaeca sp. n„ described from the stomach of Brycon hilarii, are a short anterior intestinal caecum reaching anteriorly only to the posterior end of oesophagus, comparatively short spicules (0.367 mm), number of male caudal papillae (20 pairs of preanals and 4 pairs of postanals) and an elongate, rather long body (male 17 mm, female 23 mm).
Spermiogenesis in Phyllobothrium lactuca Beneden, 1850 begins with the formation of a differentiation zone bordered by cortical microtubules and containing a nucleus and two ccntrioles separated by an intercentriolar body and disposed one in the prolongation of the other. Later, formation of flagellar buds, striated roots and a median cytoplasmic extension takes place. Each centriole gives rise to a flagellimi that rotates and fuses with the median cytoplasmic extension. At this stage, arched membranes appear at the front of the differentiation zone. The nucleus elongates, becomes filiform and migrates between the striated roots into the spermatid. After the migration of the nucleus, the old spermatid separates from the residual cytoplasm by strangulation of the ring of arched membranes. Absence of striated roots, right at the beginning of spermiogenesis has never been described before in the Tctraphyllidea. Likewise, centrioles made up of doublets of microtubules and spermatids with two axonemes have never been reported before during spermiogenesis of a Phyllobothriidae. In this work we show, for the first time, the existence in cestodes of thick-walled microtubulcs surrounded by a layer of electron-dense material. In addition, we describe, for the first time, the existence of an accumulation of electron-dense granules around striated roots and an hour-glass-shaped constriction at the anterior extremity of a median cytoplasmic extension in a platyhelminth.
Incorporation of labelled CO2, 3-phosphoglycerate (PGA), phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) and pyruvate into hexane extractable rabber ffactions in the cut shoots of guayule {Parthenium argentatum Gray) was determined in order to evaluate the role of photosynthesis in providing precursors for rubber biosynthesis. DCMU inhibited the incorporation of labelled CO2 and PGA into rubber. The incorporation of i'*C02 into rubber depended on irradiance. Enzymatic activities of phosphoglyceromutase, enolase, pyruvate kinase and pyruvate dehydrogenase complex found in purified chloroplasts from the leaves indicated the chloroplast autonomy for intraplastid acetyl coenzyme A formation. The enzymes related to the biosynthesis of isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) were associated with both leaf and stem extracts. Rubber producing enzyme activities, námely IPP isomerase and rubber transferase, were abundantly localized in roots and stems of guayule while the leaves exhibited low activities of these enzymes. Hence the leaves of guayule play a major role in providing precursors for rubber formation in stems and roots.
