The diurnal trends of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in four Lycoris species (L. houdyshelii, L. aurea, L. radiata var. pumila and L. albiflora) were determined and compared with a portable photosynthesis analysis system. Our study revealed that L. houdyshelii had the lowest light compensation point (LCP), while the other three species had higher LCP (12.37-14.99 μmol m-2 s-1); L. aurea had the highest light saturation point (LSP) (1,189 μmol m-2 s-1), and L. houdyshelii and L. albiflora had lower LSP with the values being 322 and 345 μmol m-2 s-1, respectively, and L. radiata var. pumila showed the intermediate LSP. Both the species L. houdyshelii and L. albiflora exhibited a typical and obvious decline in net photosynthetic rate (PN) during midday, which was not observed in L. aurea. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in L. houdyshelii and L. albiflora as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) values were higher in these two species. The minimal fluorescence (F0) values were lower in L. aurea and L. radiata var. pumila. The diurnal changes of transpiration rate (E) in all four species presented only one peak, appearing between 11:00 h or 13:00 h. PN were different among four species and the main factors were photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and relative humidity especially for L. aurea and L. radiata. The results of studying indicated that the four species could be divided into two groups. Five potential /3-adrenoceptor blocking (BAB) compounds, alkylesters of 4-[(2-hydroxy-3-alkylamino)propoxy] phenylcarbamic acid, and eight calcium channel blockers (CB), i.e. nifedipine, nimodipine, niludipine, nitrendipine, verapamil, gallopamil, mepamil and diltiazem, were compared as to their inhibitory effect on thrombin induced aggregation of washed rat platelets and their effect on dynamies/disorder of liposomal membranes prepared from platelet lipids, studied by EPR spectroscopy of a lipid spin probe. The anti-aggregatory potency of the BAB and CB drugs was effective within the concentration range of 0.01-1 mmol/1. The antiaggregatory potency of BAB increased in the order BL- 143< BL-243< BL-343 < BL-443 < BL-543 and among the CB, nifedipine and diltiazem were the least potent, whereas nitrendipine and mepamil were the most potent drugs. The potency of the other CB tested was intermediate. The BAB drugs increased the dynamies/disorder of the liposomes in the same order as they inhibited platelet aggregation, whereas there was no relationship between antiaggregatory effect of CB and their influence on dynamies/disorder of the liposomes. Nifedipine, nimodipine, niludipine and nitrendipine had a minor perturbation effect on the liposomes, whereas verapamil, mepamil, gallopamil and diltiazem pronouncedly increased the dynamies/disorder of the hydro- phobic part of the liposomes. The results indicate that the anti-aggregatory activity of BAB drugs may be mediated, at least partially, through their perturbation effect on the lipid part of biological membranes.
In whole cells of the wild type of Synechocystis 6714 exposed to high irradiance (Hl) the electron transfer to Qb was inhibited before the transfer to Qa In the mutant AzV with two point mutations in the Qg pocket (Ala 251 Val and Phe 211 Ser) the inhibition of electron transport to Qb had about the same rate as in the wild type but the transport to Qa was inhibited faster in the mutant. In the mutant also the repair of photosystem 2 (PS 2) reaction centres was slower after a moderate photoinhibitory damage. In contrast degradation of the Dl protein in the course of photoinhibition in vitro was slower with thylakoids from the mutant than with those of the wild type. In CMamydomonas cells photoinhibited at low temperature (5 °C) and in spinách thylakoids under anaerobic conditions a fast inhibition of electron transfer developed in PS 2 simultaneously with a State characteiized by a high level of F^. This high fluorescent statě disappeared and electron transport activity was restored in the dark without protein synďiesis when photoinhibited samples were soon transferred to higher temperature (25 °C) or to aerobic conditions, respectively. On the other hand, the irreversible photoinhibitory damage characteiized by the dechne of was slowed down by lowering of the temperature in all the objects tested.
Salivary gland extracts (SGE) from unfed and 5 days led adult female Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus, 1758); Haemaphysalis inermis (Birula, 1895) and Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794) ticks were prepared. The protein content after feeding increased by 10.6, 8.7 and 6.8 limes, respectively. Extracts were equilibrated to the same protein content and submitted to SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by computer analysis of the scanned gels. Relative differences in protein profiles of extracts obtained from unfed and partially fed ticks were found in all species and some of them were similar in all three species used in the study. Results demonstrate that the increase of the protein content in salivary glands during the feeding does not occur proportionally. Some proteins are synthesised preferentially (67.1 kDa, 13.5 kDa) but other bands (in range of 15-16 kDa) present in the SGE derived from unfed ticks arc less discernible in that of fed ticks.
The relative length of telomeres measured in peripheral blood leukocytes is a commonly used system marker for biological aging and can also be used as a biomarker of cardiovascular aging. However, to what extent the telomere length in peripheral leukocytes reflects telomere length in different organ tissues is still unclear. Therefore, we have measured relative telomere length (rTL) in twelve different human tissues (peripheral blood leukocytes, liver, kidney, heart, spleen, brain, skin, triceps, tongue mucosa, intercostal skeletal muscle, subcutaneous fat, and abdominal fat) from twelve cadavers (age range of 29 week of gestation to 88 years old). The highest rTL variability was observed in peripheral leukocytes, and the lowest variability was found in brain. We found a significant linear correlation between leukocyte rTL and both intercostal muscle (R=0.68, P<0.02) and liver rTL (R=0.60, P<0.05) only. High rTL variability was observed between different organs from one individual. Furthermore, we have shown that even slight DNA degradation (modeled by sonication of genomic DNA) leads to false rTL shortening. a1_Quantitative behavioural traits associated with egg-laying, such as the level of selectivity for host-supports and the size of egg clutches, are generally thought to be of great importance for the subsequent survival and development of offspring. These quantitative traits, however, are often difficult to assess reliably by direct observation in the field. This is particularly the case when the insects are very tiny, which is the case for most galling and leaf mining insects. However, a new approach, the "Melba" procedure, allows the indirect inference of these quantitative traits, using easily recorded field-data only. Application of this diagnostic procedure to a large series of samples of beech leaves (Fagus silvatica), harbouring either a leaf miner, Phyllonorycter maestingella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) or one or the other of two galling insects, Mikiola fagi or Hartigiola annulipes (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) indicates that the leaf miner differs significantly from the two species of galling insect in term of combined values of host-acceptance ratio and average clutch-size, while the two gall-inducing species remain substantially undistinguishable from each other according to these traits. Thus, the galling insects (i) show stronger selectivity for a host than does the miner at any given average clutch-size and (ii) show larger average clutch-size at any given level of selectivity. That is, for at least these three species, the galling insects show a greater level of selectivity when choosing leaves to oviposit on but, then, tend to lay larger egg-clutches. These differences may be due (i) to the gall-inducing process requiring far more of leaf tissues than being simply palatable, which makes it likely that galling species will be more selective in their choice of leaves than leaf miners and (ii) to the capacity of galls to become nutrient sinks, which may help explain why the galling insects laid larger, a2_egg clutches. However, whether these trends can be regarded as general rather specific to this particular case, depends on the outcome of future studies on other groups of insects with similar life histories., and Jean BÉGUINOT.
The sublethal effect of mercury and lead was Investigated on visceral (liver, muscle, gill, kidney and brain) succinic, malic and lactic dehydrogenases in Labeo rohita, Ciarías batrachus and Ghana punctatus in acute experiments. The highest decrease of succinic, malic and lactic dehydrogenases was recorded in the hepatic tissue in comparison to muscle, brain, kidney and gill. This decrease was greater in L. rohita than in C. batrachus or in C. punctatus. Mercury was more effective than lead. Marked variations in the activities of the three dehydrogenases in dark tissues (liver, kidney) were noted after exposure to mercury than lead in the above mentioned species. The observed dehydrogenase variations are discussed in relation to the breakdown of gas exchange at the lamellar level, to visceral hypoxia, hypoglycaemia, impaired aerobic and anaerobic pathways, formation of a metalloenzyme complex and alterations in mitochondrial electron transport.
The suitability of Liriomyza sativae Blanchard, L. trifolii (Burgess) and L. bryoniae (Kaltenbach) as hosts of the solitary larval-pupal parasitoid Dacnusa sibirica Telenga was studied. This parasitoid is used as a biological control agent against L. trifolii and L. bryoniae. The parasitoid laid eggs in L. sativae, but no adult parasitoids emerged from the puparia. In contrast, D. sibirica adults emerged from the puparia of L. trifolii and L. bryoniae, and there was no significant difference in emergence rate, female developmental time, or sex ratio when parasitizing these two host species. The parasitoid adults that emerged from the L. bryoniae puparia were significantly larger than those from L. trifolii puparia. In conclusion, D. sibirica, a useful biological control agent of L. trifolii and L. bryoniae, cannot control L. sativae.
In the present study, we investigated the antioxidative potential in leaves of the chromatic (CC) versus green (GC) Amaranthus tricolor L. under moderate high-temperature stress at 45°C. Before heat stress, CC had significantly higher levels of betacyanins [about 3.2 mg g-1(FM)] than the green [1.8 mg g-1(FM) (p<0.01), while similar chlorophyll (Chl) content [about 2 mg g-1(FM)] was observed between both cultivars. After exposure to high temperature (45°C) for 6 days, betacyanins in leaves of CC were remarkably increased (about 2 times of that in control samples grown at 30°C). In contrast, betacyanins in GC significantly decreased by 56% in comparison with that of the control. Chl level in CC was higher than that in GC after heat stress for 6 days. Flavonoids and total phenolics in both cultivars were increased, but much more in CC. Significantly less H2O2 accumulation was observed in the leaves and stems of CC than in those of GC under heat stress. Interestingly, much stronger circadian oscillation in fluorescence was observed in both cultivars after treatment at 45°C, which suggested that heat stress stimulates endogenous rhythms of photosystem II (PSII). Under moderate high-temperature stress, Chl fluorescence parameters Fv/Fm (maximum quantum yield of PSII), qP (coefficient of photochemical quenching), ΦPSII (effective PSII quantum yield), and ETR (electron transport rate) exhibited a gradual decrease, NPQ (nonphotochemical quenching) showed a slight increase followed by a gradual decline, whereas Fo (minimum fluorescence of a dark-adapted leaf) increased continuously. In contrast to GC, after 120 h of high-temperature treatment, CC exhibited significantly lower Fo level, and higher levels of Fv/Fm and NPQ. It is clear that PSII in CC was more stable than that in GC. The results indicate that betacyanins are an effective antioxidant, and probably contribute greatly to the higher thermal stability of PSII and higher tolerance to heat stress. and Z. Shu ... The study of foraging behaviour of 20 forest bird species was conducted during two different phenophases of a vegetation period in the West Carpathians oak-dominated natural forests. Using a standard and a modified a priori approaches, seven foraging guilds were distinguished, whereas only five significantly different guilds were clustered by a a posteriori approach. Four common guilds for all three approaches were quantitatively compared. The methods differed especially in the classification of foraging generalists. Differences in guild densities between a priori and a posteriori approaches emerged in both, the pre-foliage and the foliage periods, chiefly in the guilds of insectivores on ground surface (47.3–89.6%) and insectivores on buds/leaves and twigs (15.0–45.9%). The modified a priori method provided moderate densities of separate guilds. The modified a priori method with more detailed density calculation is recommended for the quantitative guild structure comparisons of different bird assemblages. The method takes into consideration proportional use of foraging substrates in combination with food type.
