The larvae of Lype phaeopa (Stephens, 1836) are found on dead wood substrates in streams and lakes. Gut content analyses, scanning electron microscopy of larval mouthparts, and gallery structure revealed characteristics of this habitat preference. The guts of the larvae contained mainly wood fragments whereas other food items (detritus, algae, fungi, inorganic particles) were much rarer. The suitability of the mouthparts to scrape wood surfaces, and the adaptative elongation of the silk-secreting spinneret, which facilitates the construction of retreats consisting of a tunnel-like silken net incorporating mainly wood fragments, are discussed. Retreat-construction under laboratory conditions indicated that larvae exploit new feeding areas by steadily extending their galleries. Tips of the maxillary palps bear five sensilla styloconica and five sensilla basiconica, almost all bearing an apical pore. Three sensilla styloconica, two with an apical peg, and two small inconspicious sensilla basiconica are located on the galea. Possible function of these sensilla is discussed on the basis of studies on the closely related sister-group of Lepidoptera.
We studied movement and abundance of barbel, Barbus barbus , over three years (October 1995 to September 1998) in two stretches (Woolmer’s Park, Holwell Bridge) of a section of the River Lee (Hertfordshire, England) delimitated by water retention structures. Of 349 tagged individuals (168 at Woolmer’s Park; 181 at Holwell Bridge), 51.8 % and 13.3 % respectively were recaptured at least once, with a much higher rate of multiple recaptures at Woolmer’s Park, where monitoring of movements was over a longer period, than at Holwell Bridge, where too few recaptures were made for further movement analysis. At Woolmer’s Park, 77.1 % of the barbel showed limited (i.e. resident component) and the rest greater between- capture movements (i.e. mobile component). There was no preferential directional movement across size classes. Based on the available recapture data, population size (estimated through a Bayesian method) first increased moderately (1995–96) and then sharply (1996–97) at Woolmer’s Park, and even further later at Holwell Bridge (1998–99). This may reflect a recovery phase in the local population, or possibly a rising part of a cyclic recruitment pattern, such as reported for barbel elsewhere and for other cyprinids in the UK. Habitat enhancement is recommended over stocking, given the adequate abundance of barbel in areas with suitable habitat. However, it remains unclear whether fencing-off of the banks from livestock will enhance 0+ barbel numbers, which appear to be low relative to some European rivers of similar width and depth.
Precipitation is important input into the hydrological system. With its time and space distribution significantly influences outflow from the catchment. This contribution deals with movement of rainfall events in Prague area. Velocities and directions of storm movement have been estimated on the basis of two years measurement from PVS a.s. rain-gauge network. Mostly convective rainfall events have been evaluated. There are estimated mean parameters for whole area and partial values of rainfall movement for nine subareas, into which the Prague area has been divided. Results can be used for estimation of space-time rainfall distribution in the catchment. and Srážka je důležitou vstupní veličinou hydrologického systému. Svým časovým a plošným rozdělením výrazně ovlivňuje odtok z povodí. Předkládaný příspěvek se zabývá pohybem dešťů na území Prahy. Na základě dvouletých měření srážkoměrné sítě PVS a.s. byly stanoveny rychlosti posunu a směry pohybu převážně konvektivních dešťových událostí v zájmové oblasti. Jsou stanoveny průměrné parametry pohybu pro celou oblast a dílčí hodnoty rychlostí a směrů pohybu srážky v devíti podoblastech, na které bylo území Prahy rozděleno. Výsledné hodnoty pohybu srážek lze využít pro stanovení časoprostorového průběhu srážky v povodí.
U sing manual acoustic tracking our study quantified (1) the spatial distribution (2) the movement patterns and (3) the depth preference of adult whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus in a small artificial lake of eastern Belgium were the species was introduced in 1978 for recreational fishing. From June to October 2004, n=6 C. lavaretus (LF 285–519 mm) were tracked (pingers and depth sensor transmitters) from a small boat over periods ranging from 98 to 108 days in Robertville Lake (elevation: 490 m; area: 63 ha; max. depth: 47 m). Whitefish were consistently mobile but showed quite variable lake use patterns. Two individuals traveled the entire length and breadth of the lake, whereas others remained in movement in the deep zone in the middle part of the lake or near the retaining dam wall. Whitefish occupied positions in the water column ranging from 2.6 to 27.0 m (mean 12.7 m ± 5.6 m) that varied depending on individuals. This first study on individual whitefish behaviour provides a better understanding of the behavioural ecology of the species in small artificial lake.
The Moravia territory has been the subject of geokinematic investigation within scope of several realized research projects and repeated GPS campaigns since 1992. The monitoring has been concentrated on all the Moravia region as well as on particular areas of interest concerning the eventual possible geodynamic changes (Králický Sněžník Massif, Diendorf-Čebín Tectonic Zone (DCTZ) and others). At present time all the territory is covered by several tenths of permanent and epoch GNSS stations. Long observation time series at permanent stations alone are not sufficient for delivering the regional velocity field of sufficient density. On the other hand, epoch stations are more densely spread but periods of repeated observations are less frequent and often the data processing is not homogeneous. In the paper the preliminary kinematic model is briefly described which gives for the first time the general view of movement tendencies at the region of Moravia. We studied the demography, movement, behaviour and choice of nectar plants by adults of Aporia crataegi. This study was done in a dense network of different types of habitats (total size of study area 16.26 ha) from open landscape to shrubland, the latter being a result of abandonment of traditional agricultural practices such as extensive mowing and grazing. Total population size was estimated to be approximately 1700 and 2700 for females and males, respectively. Median and maximum distances moved by males were 134 and 3493 m, and by females 138 and 3165 m, respectively. The average lifespan was ca. 7.1 and 7.5 days, with maximum recorded lifespans of 21 and 17 days for males and females, respectively. The greater capture probability recorded for males indicates their high activity, as they spend most of their time in flight patrolling and searching for mates. A parabolic recruitment curve and protandry were also recorded. Both sexes are highly mobile. The spatial distribution of both sexes was roughly similar. The adult behaviour differed in different habitats, with more time spent feeding and resting when nectar plants were plentiful and more time spent flying when they were rare. Although adults utilized nine nectar sources, only two were recorded in over 80% of all the feeding occasions. Altogether 701 adult barbel, Barbus barbus were captured by electrofishing and individually tagged to study their local displacement and movements in a stretch of the River Jihlava (Czech Republic). A total of 149 fish were recaptured and 105 of them (70.47 %) were considered as ”resident” because they were always recaptured in the same, relatively restricted (250 - 780 m) stream section, which always contained a pool and was demarcated naturally by riffles on both edges. The remaining 44 recaptured specimens (29.53 %) belonged to the “mobile” part of population, their movements encompassing two (or exceptionally more) adjacent stream sections and at maximum a distance of 1680 m downstream or 2020 m upstream. The proportion of mobile barbel, relatively low in smaller and middle size classes, increased in the largest size classes (451–550 mm of SL). A rather limited extent of movements also suggests a relatively small area of home range in the studied stretch, which nevertheless provides satisfactory resources and favourable conditions required by barbel over their entire life cycle. The extent of movements and corresponding proportion of mobile fish appear to be increasing with diminishing habitat patchiness. In the stretch of River Jihlava studied, with a rich patchy heterogenous habitat and well developed riffle-pool-raceway structure, each section (pool) can be considered as a more or less isolated spatial unit containing its own, and in a certain degree, isolated component of a metapopulation.
This article aims to explain the effects of the recent economic and financial crisis on housing conditions and the ability of Portuguese families to access housing. It also intends to discuss how the crisis is reconfiguring the housing patterns, in terms of access to housing and changes in public policies, questioning the predominant mode of access to housing based on homeownership. This article also discusses the role of social housing in the Portuguese housing system and the changes and challenges in this sector coming from the economic and financial constraints of families and the state. This article is structured in three parts. The first is an overview of the Portuguese housing system and social housing in particular, highlighting the conditions and reasons that led to a reduced social housing stock and to the predominance of homeownership. The second part discusses the impact of the crisis on families and the state, trying to demonstrate how the constraints on both are translated into (1) worsening housing conditions, (2) a diversification of groups struggling to access housing in the private market and (3) a reduction of affordable housing, pressing the social housing sector. Finally, the third part is a reflection on the changes that the crisis has had in the orientation of housing policies and their instruments, arguing that the patterns of the Portuguese housing system are changing with emphasis on the need to diversify the housing supply to increasingly diverse groups in housing need.
Moxidectin is a macrocyclic lactone belonging to milbemycin family closely related to ivermectin and is currently progressing towards Phase III clinical trial against human infection with the filaria Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart, 1894). There is a single report on the microfilaricidal and embryostatic activity of moxidectin in case of the human lymphatic filarial parasite Brugia malayi (Brug, 1927) in Mastomys coucha (Smith) but without any adulticidal action. In the present study, the in vitro and in vivo antifilarial efficacy of moxidectin was evaluated on, B. malayi. In vitro moxidectin showed 100% reduction in adult female worm motility at 0.6 µM concentration within 7 days with 68% inhibition in the reduction of MTT (3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide dye) (which is used to detect viability of worms). A 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of moxidectin for adult female parasite was 0.242 µM, for male worm 0.186 µM and for microfilaria IC50 was 0.813 µM. In adult B. malayi-transplanted primary screening model (Meriones unguiculatus Milne-Edwards), moxidectin at a single optimal dose of 20 mg/kg by oral and subcutaneous route was found effective on both adult parasites and microfilariae. In secondary screening (M. coucha, subcutaneously inoculated with infective larvae), moxidectin at the same dose by subcutaneous route brought about death of 49% of adult worms besides causing sterilisation in 54% of the recovered live female worms. The treated animals exhibited a continuous and sustained reduction in peripheral blood microfilaraemia throughout the observation period of 90 days. The mechanism of action of moxidectin is suggested to be similar to avermectins. The in silico studies were also designed to explore the interaction of moxidectin with glutamate-gated chloride channels of B. malayi. The docking results revealed a close interaction of moxidectin with various GluCl ligand sites of B. malayi.
