- Perloočky rodu Daphnia jsou intenzivně studovaní vodní bezobratlí. Proto byl pro nás velkým překvapením objev pro vědu nového druhu tohoto rodu v tůni na Kokořínsku. Druh byl pojmenován po významném českém hydrobiologovi Jaroslavu Hrbáčkovi, ale jeho jméno odkazuje i na hrbatý tvar těla. Jeho doposud známé lokality jsou pouze v Čechách a na Slovensku., Species of water fleas that belong to the genus Daphnia have been used intensively in studies as “model organisms”. The discovery of a new Daphnia species in a pool in Central Bohemia was, therefore, a surprise. All known localities of this species, which we named after the prominent Czech hydrobiologist Jaroslav Hrbáček, are restricted to Czechia and Slovakia., and Adam Petrusek, Petr Jan Juračka.

- The purpose of the study was to check whether hypoxia of corneal tissue increases the collagenolytic activity due to release of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Rats were exposed to hypoxia 10 % O2 for 4, 14, and 21 days. The radical tissue injury was measured by the level of nitrotyrosine and changes in the lipoperoxide-related fluorophores. Collagen protein composition was analyzed by slab gel electrophoresis. The activity of gelatinolytic enzymes was studied using the zymography. The vascularization of the corneas was measured. We found no differences in the corneal tissue in the gel electrophoretic profile of collagenous proteins and gelatinolytic activity between normoxic and hypoxic rats. We did not find any sign of radical tissue injury. There were no changes in the vascularization of corneas after exposition to hypoxia. 47. Characteristics of the compensatory renal growth of the remnant embryonic chick kidneys

- Growth of the remnant embryonic kidney (the mesonephros), as expressed by wet weight, was more rapid in the chick embryos with experimentally induced unilateral renal agenes is compared to controls. The difference was significant between embryonic days 8-12, when the doubled weights of remnant kidneys were increased compared with the weights of paired control kidneys. The excessive growth of the mesonephros ceased on day 14, when the normal physiological regression of the embryonic kidney begins. In the definitive kidney, the metanephros, no significant differences in weights of the control vs. remnant metanephros were found on days 10-14. The characteristics of increased mesonephric growth were evaluated by determination of DNA/protein ratios in homogenates of the kidneys. Significant cellular hypertrophy was found in both the mesonephros and metanephros of the embryos with URA on day 10. Additionally, a non-significant cellular hyperplasia was also revealed in the remnant mesonephros on day 8. This gives evidence that the growth stimuli to the mesonephroi were probably strongest between days 8-10 and that they manifested in the remnant mesonephros only. and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy

- The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of chronic administration of the β-adrenoceptor agonist clenbuterol (2 mg/kg body weight/day for a period of 30 days) on the major contractile protein (myosin) in the left ventricular muscle of the adult mouse heart. Separation of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms on 7.5 % glycerol SDS-PAGE and subsequent quantification of the gels by laser densitometry showed a 6.5-fold increase in the β-isoform of MHC in the clenbuterol-treated group. The α: β ratio of these two isoforms in the control group was 98.16±0.14 %: 1.83±0.14 %, whereas in the treated group it was 88.05±1.15 %: 11.95±1.15 %. Actomyosin ATPase activity assay demonstrated a significant (20 %) decline in ATPase activity of the tissue in the β-agonist-treated group. These results suggest that chronic clenbuterol treatment is capable to induced the transformation of MHC isoforms increasing the slow β-MHC isoform, which may contribute to the altered contractile mechanics of clenbuterol-treated hearts., S. - Článek přestavuje taxonomicky problematický rod chrpa z čeledi Asteraceae. Jsou diskutovány současné pohledy na vymezení a vnitřní členění rodu založené na molekulárních znacích. Dále je popsána problematika hybridizace, která je v rodu velmi častá, a její souvislost s polyploidií (druhy stejné ploidie se často kříží za vzniku rozsáhlých a variabilních hybridních rojů, zatímco mezi ploidiemi je silná reprodukční bariéra)., Centaurea is a taxonomically critical genus from the Asteraceae family. Current delimitation of the genus and its internal classification based on molecular data are discussed. Hybridization and polyploidy are common in Centaurea. The frequency of hybridization depends on ploidy levels of the taxa (homoploid taxa usually hybridize easily and form extensive and variable hybrid swarms, while heteroploid taxa are reproductively strongly isolated)., and Petr Koutecký.

This is due to the dramatic development of molecular biological techniques, which made it possible to read a much larger amount of data than was possible before.
