Obsáhlá recenze představuje náplň a hlavní teze knihy, její prameny a teoretická východiska a formuluje některé polemické soudy. Klíčem k interpretaci fenoménu masových gymnastických vystoupení různých věkových, sociálních a profesních, genderově rozdělených skupin obyvatelstva na stadionech v českých zemích a Československu od druhé poloviny 19. století do devadesátých let století dvacátého je pro autora mnohotvárná analýza politické symboliky těla a jeho pohybu, reprezentujícího ideály jednoty národního společenství či socialistické společnosti. The extensive review presents the content and leading principles of the book, as well as its sources and theoretical foundations, and formulates some polemic arguments. The key of the author´s interpretation ot the phenomenon of the mass gymnastics event of different age, social and professional, gender-differentiated groups of population in arenas in the Czech Lands and Czechoslovakia since the second half of the 19th century until the 1990s is a multifaceted analysis of the political symbolism of the body and its movements as a representation of ideals of the unity of the nation and the socialist society. In the reviewer´s opinion the book´s meticulously documented factography, erudite use of different theoretical concepts, convincing argumentation and clear style have resulted in a compact, comprehensive inspiring and attractive monograph. a1_Východiskem článku je pojem ''národní cesty k socialismu'' ve svých dvou základních významech, tedy politickotaktickém i teoretickém. Jeho cílem je ukázat na českém příkladu komplikovaný a dynamický vývoj ústředních témat ''ideologických vichřic'' dvacátého století kondenzovaných v pojmech ''revoluce'' a ''národní emancipace''. Autor se zaměřuje na dva významné české komunistické politické myslitele a aktivisty - historika, muzikologa a ministra v československých poválečných vládách Zdeňka Nejedlého (1878-1962) a na filozofa a esejistu Karla Kosíka (1926-2003) - kteří reprezentují dvě odlišné existenční, generační a intelektuální reakce české radikální levice na výzvy své doby. Oba se pokusili svým vlastním, osobitým způsobem formulovat předpoklady a koncepční rámce české či československé "národní cesty" k socialismu, ale též varovat před jejími úskalími. He seeks to demonstrate, usig the Czech example, the complicated dynamic development of the central themes of the ''ideological whirlwinds'' of the twentieth century which are concentrated in the terms ''revolution'' and ''national emancipation''. To this end he focuses on two important Czech Communist political thinkers and activists - the historian, musicologist, and minister in post-war Czechoslovak governments, Zdeněk Nejedlý (1878-1962), and the philosopher and essayist KIarel Kosík (1926-2003) - each of whom, with regard to their generation and their lives in general, represents a different Czech radical left-wing intellectual approach to the challenges of his times. Each man, in his own distinctive way, sought to formulate the prerequisites and conceptual framework of the Czechoslovak, or Czech "national road" to Socialism, but also to warn about pirfalls. With his early post-Second World War conception of Czechoslovak Communists as the heirs of progressive national traditions, Nejedlý sought to show how the legacy of the Hussite revolution of the fifteenth century and the National Awakening of the nineteenth century was currently relevant to Communist policy. Indeed, on the whole he succeeded in linking it with Communist Party efforts to achieve the historical legitimation of their government and thus create the official framework of the interpretation of Czech history which remained authoritatively valid throughout the 1950s., a2_Kosík, by contrast, first attempted, from radically left-wing positions, to work out alternative, implicitly polemical conceptions of national revolutionary continuity, which sought inspiration amongst Czech radical democrats and their revolutionary expression in 1848, and he thus became, from the late 1950s, one of the chief representatives of Marxist revisionism in Czechoslovakia, a philosopher-critic of Stalinism and the dehumanization of modern man and woman under the pressure of abstract ideologies and the apparatus of power and the bureaucracy, eventually earning the reputation of the philosopher of the Prague Spring of 1968. a1_Po roce 1989 došlo ke změně v normativních vyjádřeních o společenském konfliktu ve východní Evropě. Paradigma společenských věd včetně historiografie se rovněž změnilo. Bráno s rezervou, lze tuto změnu nazvat ''obratem k identitě''. Obsah pojmu ''identita'' byl inspirován dějinami, avšak měnil se do aktuálních podob. Stať analyzuje třecí plochy, na nichž docházelo ke kontaktu většinového českého prostředí s kulturní identitou, historickou pamětí a historiografickou sebereflexí českých židů po roce 1989 (do roku 2012). Cílem pojednání je analyzovat základní strukturu vyjádření o židovských dějinách v daném lokálním a časovém rámci a zjistit, jakou roli v nich hraje narativ obětí. Autor dovozuje hypotézu o nezanedbatelném vlivu ''plačtivého pojetí židovských dějin'' v polistopadové české historiografii. Rozlišuje přitom mezi třemi paradigmatickými schématy, která pak vymezuje a vyhodnocuje na základě jejich funkcí: metodologický nacionalismus, metodologický totalitarismus a metodologický kulturalismus. The paradigm of the social sciences, including historiography, changed as well. It is on the whole fair to call this the ''identity turn''. The meaning of the term ''identity'' was inspired by history but changed into up-to-date forms. The article analyses points of friction where contact took place between majority Czech society and cultural identity, historical memory, and historiographical self-reflections of Czech Jews after the Changes of 1989 to 2012. In this article, the author seeks to analyse the basic structure of statements about Jewish history in the Bohemian Lands in this period, and to determine what role the narrative of the victim plays in them. The author presents his hypothesis of the considerable influence of the "lachrymose conception of Jewish history" in Czech historiography after the Changes of 1989. In this, he distinguishes between three paradigms, which he then further defines and assesses according to their functions: methodological nationalism, methodological totalitarianism, and methodological culturalism. He then identifies the constellations in which they appear both in academic and in public discources, especially those influencing the politics of identity of the Czech Jews. At the same time, he seeks to explain why the schemes make it difficult to understand the modern history of the Jews of the Bohemian Lands., a2_The history of the Jews, according to the author, became locked in an interpretation based solely on the idea of ''eternal antisemitism and its victims''. This is therefore a good example of history/memory as an inherent component of ideology. Recenzovaná dvoudílná publikace je společným dílem čtyř desítek autorů, většinou ruských, pod vedením historika Andreje Zubova a její původní vydání (Istorija Rosii: XX vek, sv. 1: 1894-1939; sv. 2: 1939-2007. Moskva, AST-Astrel 2009) vyvolalo v Rusku prudkou výměnu názorů. Recenzentka přibližuje hlavní aspekty její tehdejší kritiky a připomíná, že Zubov byl po kritice ruského obsazení Krymu v roce 2014 propuštěn ze zaměstnání v Moskevském státním ústavu mezinárodních vztahů. Konflikt s ruským politickým establishmentem mu propůjčil pověst proskribovaného historika a zajistil českému vydání jeho díla značnou publicitu. Recenzentka konstatuje, že tato rozsáhlá syntéza ruských dějin od konce 19. do začátku 21. století je spíše než odbornou historickou prací filozoficko-historickým pojednáním, jehož východiska shledává v idejích Alexandra Solženicyna a dalších konzervativních ruských myslitelů. Autorská koncepce je založena na přesvědčení o nezbytném duchovním a morálním obrození ruské společnosti a státu prostřednictvím křesťanské víry (pravoslaví) a s nimi spjatých tradičních hodnot. In two tomes is a collective work of about forty authors, mainly Russian ones, under the leadership of historian Andrey Zubov, and its original edition (Istoria Rossii: XX vek, Vol. 1: 1894-1939; Vol. 2: 1939-2007. Moscow, AST-Astrel 2009) prompted a heated exchange of opinions in Russia. The reviewer describes principal aspects of the book´s criticism, noting that Zubov lost his job at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 2014 after criticizing the Russian annexation of Crimea. The conflict with the Russian political establishment has given him a reputation of a proscribed historian and the Czech edition of his work a lot of publicity. The reviewer concludes that the extensive synthesis of the Russian history since the end of the 19th till the beginning of the 21st centuries is a philosophical-historical treatise with roots in ideas of Alexander Solzhenitsyn and other conservative Russian thinkers rather than a professional historical work. The author´s concept stems from his conviction of a necessarty spritual and moral renaissance of the Russian society and state through Christian faith and traditional values related thereto. The authors perceive the Russian history of the 20th century as a disaster, the key fatal factor being, in their opinion, the disintegration of religious, national and social unity. Their attitude to the Communist ideology and practice is utterly negative, and they also criticize Great Russian nationalism and expansionism. However, the reviewer claims their efforts to separate the "Russian" from the "Bolshevist" or "Soviet", manifested by denying the society´s share in tragic events of the Russian history, are not too convincing. Životopis druhého československého prezidenta Edvarda Beneše (1884-1948) jako politika, diplomata, státníka a politického publicisty je překladem původního titulu Edvard Beneš: De la gloire à l’abîme. Un drame entre Hitler et Staline (Paris, Perrin 2015). Profesor dějin střední a východní Evropy na pařížské Sorbonně Antoine Marès, publikující především o československé a české historii, vytvořil podle recenzenta své dílo v nejlepší tradici francouzské historické biografie. Postupoval chronologicky a dramatické momenty v moderní československé historii i s nimi spjatá Benešova těžká osobní dilemata vylíčil věcně a s porozuměním pro širší souvislosti, bez zátěže negativních či pozitivních emocí, od nichž se často nedovede oprostit česká historiografie. The article lays out Jonathan Israel’s central ideas on the European Enlightenment, as they have been developed in his Radical Enlightenment (2001), Enlightenment Contested (2006) and A Revolution of the Mind (2009). I explain his ‘controversialist method’ of intellectual history and point out the advantages and faults of this approach. Israel’s model of the heterogeneous Enlightenment is shown as a response to A. MacIntyre’s postmodern criticism, and to the older models of a ‘single Enlightenment’, as presented by P. Gay, or older models of multiple enlightenments, as presented by J. G. Pocock. However, Israel’s heterogeneous Enlightenment recognizes just one progenitor of the positive ‘modern values’, which is identified with the Radical wing. The article reviews Israel’ s narrative of the development and spread of the Radical Enlightenment in Europe and the struggles with the Enlightenment mainstream and within the Enlightenment mainstream. However, I also show some faults in Israel’s argument, mainly his view of the ‘secular morality’, which should have been the outcome of the Radical Enlightenment’s campaign. In conclusion, I point at the inconsistency of Israel’s reconstruction of the Enlightenment morals and the differences between his view and J. Publikace je překladem původního titulu The Myth and Reality of Hitler’s Secret Police (London, Hodder & Stoughton 2015). Britský historik se v ní podle recenzenta pokouší nabídnout novou, revizionistickou interpretaci role politické policie v totalitní společnosti. Ve své knize tvrdí, že nacistická Tajná státní policie (Geheime Staatspolizei - Gestapo) nebyla zdaleka oním všemocným, obávaným a brutálním aparátem, jak se traduje, ale spíše nepočetnou, přetíženou a podfinancovanou policejní složkou, která sestávala většinou z bývalých kriminalistů, reagovala nejčastěji na udání od občanů, vyšetřovala zdlouhavě a nepříliš efektivně a držela se zákonných postupů. Podle recenzenta, který s jeho výkladem podrobněji seznamuje, je tento obraz místy celkem věrohodný (ve vztahu k církvím), jindy ale nepřesvědčivý (zejména ve vztahu k Židům). Navíc autor líčí pouze vývoj poměrů ve třetí říši, a jeho zobecňující závěry jsou tedy nepodložené., The publication is a translation of the original title The Myth and Reality of Hitler´s Secret Police (London: Hodder a. Stoughton 2915). According to the reviewer, the British historian attempts to present a new, revisionist interpretation of the role of the political police in a totalitarian society. He claims that the Nazi Secret State Police (Geheime Staatspolizei - Gestapo) was not the omnipotent, fearsome, and brutal apparatus it is purposed to have been, but rather an undermanned, overworked, and underfinanced police organization staffed mostly by former detectives, reacting mainly to denunciations submited by citizens, using lengthy and not very effective investigation methods, and sticting to legal producers. According to the reviewer who provides a fairly detailed account of the author´s interpretations, the above picture is sometimes relatively credible (in relation to churches), but not very convincing in other places (in particular in relation to Jews).
