A comparison of Searle’s contrasting position on explaining consciousness and free will is conducted with an aim to show that while consciousness on his view presents a relatively easy problem, while free will is presented as a serious challenge to naturalism. We suggest that with a certain shift of perspective on causality, free will problem might be just as tractable as the problem of consciousness., Porovnání Searlovy kontrastní pozice s vysvětlením vědomí a svobodné vůle je prováděno s cílem ukázat, že zatímco vědomí na jeho pohled představuje relativně snadný problém, zatímco svobodná vůle je prezentována jako vážný problém pro naturalismus.
It has been argued that consciousness is not possible without peripheral self-consciousness; i.e., without an implicit awareness of oneself as the subject of one’s mental state. My purpose is to undermine this view. I contend that a subject’s first-personal access to her conscious mental states and an awareness of them as hers, along with a particular approach to consciousness according to which a subject cannot be unconsciously conscious of things motivate the view that consciousness is not possible without self-consciousness. In order to undermine this view I argue that not all conscious states are accompanied by a sense of mineness. I also reject the reasons for endorsing an approach to consciousness according to which a subject cannot be unconsciously conscious of things. Then I critically examine Kriegel’s arguments for the dependence of consciousness on self-consciousness based on the first-personal access a subject has to her conscious mental states and discuss the difficulties involved., To bylo argumentoval, že vědomí není možné bez periferního self-vědomí; tj. bez implicitní informovanosti o sobě jako o předmětu duševního stavu.
According to the two-dimensional argument against materialism, developed by David Chalmers, the conceivability of zombies entails primary possibility, and the primary possibility of zombies entails further secondary possibility. I argue that the move from the conceivability to primary possibility of zombies is unjustified. Zombies are primarily impossible despite being conceivable if the corresponding phenomenal and microphysical concepts have coinciding primary intensions (refer to the same properties in all possible worlds considered as actual) despite being distinct concepts. But there is no good reason to think that phenomenal and microphysical concepts cannot have coinciding primary intensions despite being distinct concepts. As I argue, this conclusion follows from reflection on special cognitive features of phenomenal concepts.
This paper shows that there is a quantum-physical and evolution-biological perspective for (libertarian) free will, and that the so-called scientific arguments against it are in reality metaphysical arguments and insufficient. The paper also develops the idea of a nonphysical organ of higher organisms: the Domindar (Detector of macroscopic indetermination, and restrictor)., Tento článek ukazuje, že existuje kvantově-fyzikální a evolučně-biologická perspektiva pro (libertariánskou) svobodnou vůli a že tzv. Příspěvek také rozvíjí myšlenku nefyzického orgánu vyšších organismů: Domindara (detektor makroskopické neurčitosti a omezovače)., and Uwe Meixner
The article reflects on influential views of the mind that come from cognitive science and seem to undermine the traditional philosophical view that the mind is simply unified and transparent to itself. Specifical y, the modularity thesis is presented, along with its important modifications and criticisms, suggesting that the apparent unity can be ascribed only to higher cognition, if at all. Various theories of why the mind seems to be unified while being composed of autonomous modules are discussed. The overview results in the conclusion that our linguistic capacity plays a prominent role in the unity of the mind., Článek reflektuje vlivné pohledy na mysl, které pocházejí z kognitivní vědy a zdánlivě podkopávají tradiční filosofický názor, že mysl je jednoduše sjednocená a transparentní.
Cílem je ukázat, že Freudův přístup k teorii vědomí anticipuje některé pozdější neurovědecké poznatky, připomíná hledání neurofyziologických korelátů vědomí, má některé charakteristiky emergentismu a někteří současní, zvláště neuropsychoanalyticky orientovaní autoři, nacházejí v tezích Projektu řadu styčných bodů se současným neurovědeckým výzkumem., The paper analyzes Freud's little-known manuscript Project for a Scientific Psychology and attempts to show that in the context of his psychoanalytic issues the Project is completely unique piece. Freud's aim here is to establish a theory of human mind, which would be empirically supported by neurophysiology (psychophysics) prevailing in the scientific research at that time and could explain the fundamental clinical knowledge. First the basic principles of his concept of neurophysiology of mind are introduced, three functionally distinct types of neurons and neuronal networks distinguished, and then Freud's understanding of the concept of consciousness at the level of neurophysiological interpretation is articulated. The aim is to show that Freud's approach to the theory of consciousness anticipates some of the later neuroscientific knowledge. It reminds us a quest for neurophysiological correlates of consciousness and has some characteristics of emergentism. Some contemporary, especially neuropsychoanalytically minded authors find in the theses of the Project number of points common to the current neuroscientific research., Michal Polák., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
V závěru studie pak interpretace několika textových pasáží poukazuje na souvislost těchto analýz s dalším Husserlovým myšlenkovým vývojem., The present article deals with the issue of life (Leben) in Husserl’s analyses of the consciousness of internal time. The fact that in these analyses the motif of life appears only sporadically does not diminish its importance. Life becomes an issue with regard to the intentions aimed at the context (Zusammenhangsintentionen). We try to clarify how these intentions participate in the mutual constitution of the unity of consciousness of internal time. In conclusion, we interpret some later texts to provide the reader with an understanding of Husserl’s late analyses of living with regard to the previous analysis of the consciousness of internal time., and Der vorliegende Artikel befasst sich mit dem Problem des Lebens in Husserls Analysen des inneren Zeitbewusstseins.
Searle’s conception of ontological emergence is a basis for his explanation of mind and consciousness in the physical world. In this article, I try to show that a closer examination uncovers some possible ambiguities in Searle’s conception of emergence. First, I try to show that Searle’s distinction between emergent1 and emergent2 leads to a distinction between a strong and a weak interpretation of a causal consequence of interactions among constitutive entities and that from this point of view the existence of emergent2 is improbable only in the strong sense. Second, I attempt to clarify Searle’s distinction between explanation and deduction of consciousness in his claim for the non-deducibility of consciousness . At the end I try to show in what sense is Searle’s concept of emergence loaded with a form of mechanicism, one which is being abandoned in more recent ontological conceptions., Searleovo pojetí ontologického vzestupu je základem pro jeho vysvětlení mysli a vědomí ve fyzickém světě.
The paper starts from a Searlean dilemma - we are bound to view consciousness as ultimately explicable by scientific means, yet science appears to give us no means for explaining the specificity of consciousness - and presents what I see as a plausible though speculative story for avoiding the brunt of the dilemma. The basic idea is (a) that consciousness, or anticipations of it, should be seen as pervasive throughout the biosphere; (b) that the biosphere, following Gerald Edelman, can be seen as the sphere of meta-systems irreducible to purely physical particles and forces; and (c) that it is plausible to view ''full waking consciousness'' as occurring at a very high level of meta-systematicity; with the conclusion (d) that full waking consciousness is both an expectable outcome of the biogenic forces and, in virtue of how it combines them, a very singular case., Příspěvek vychází ze Searleanovy dilema - jsme povinni vnímat vědomí jako nakonec vysvětlitelné vědeckými prostředky, ale zdá se, že věda nám neposkytuje žádné prostředky pro vysvětlení specifičnosti vědomí - a prezentuje to, co vidím jako věrohodný, i když spekulativní příběh, aby se vyhnul nápor dilematu.
This paper is a critical appraisal of the most recent attempt from cognitive science in general, developmental and evolutionary biology in particular, to understand the nature and mechanisms underlying consciousness as proposed by Anton J.M. Dijker. The proposal, briefly stated, is to view consciousness as a neural capacity for objec- tivity. What makes the problem of consciousness philosophically and scientifically challenging may be stated as follows: If consciousness has a first-person ontology and our best scientific theories have a third-person ontology, how can we come up with a satisfactory theory? Moreover, if the reduction of one to the other is impossible, what are we supposed to do? By neglecting what Chalmers calls the ''hard problem'' of consciousness, Dijker’s proposal seems unable to respond to the foregoing questions, and these questions, I maintain, are the very motivations that most of us have when we inquire about consciousness., Tento článek je kritickým posouzením posledního pokusu o kognitivní vědu obecně, zejména vývojové a evoluční biologie, pochopit podstatu a mechanismy, které jsou základem vědomí, jak navrhl Anton JM Dijker. Zanedbáním toho, co Chalmers nazývá ,,tvrdým problémem'' vědomí, se zdá, že Dijkerův návrh nedokáže odpovědět na výše uvedené otázky, and John Ian K. Boongaling
