The aim of the study was to investigate the genetic distances and their relationships among pepper species using photosynthetic features under different stresses and genetic variability. The photosynthetic features under drought, waterlogging and
low-temperature stresses, rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of nuclear genome and trnH-psbA sequence of chloroplast genome of 25 varieties from 5 pepper species Capsicum annuum L. (CA), Capsicum baccatum L. (CB), Capsicum chinense Jacquin. (CC), Capsicum frutescens L. (CF) and Capsicum pubescens Ruiz & Pavon (CP) were analyzed and used to construct the dendrograms. The results showed the photosynthetic rate of different pepper species could be greatly but differentially decreased by stresses. For example, CB and CF had the smallest and the highest decrease to drought, CC had the highest decrease to waterlogging, and CP had the smallest decrease to low temperature. The ITS sequences of 25 pepper varieties are 591-619 bp in length and have GC% between 51.1% and 64.5%. Their trnH-psbA sequences are 537-558 bp in length and have GC% between 27.2% and 28.5%. The cluster analysis of the five pepper species based on the changes in PN under stresses is similar to that based on genetic variability, that is, CP clusters with CB, and CC clusters with CA after first clusters with CF. In addition, the clustering methods based on the photosynthetic stress responses and genetic variability are unable to completely distinguish pepper varieties within the same species. The results indicate that similarly to genetic variability, changes in PN under stresses (specifically the stress corresponding to the climate of plant’s original habitat) could be used to identify genetic distance of pepper species., L. Retroviry jsou jednoduché RNA viry, které se vyznačují schopností přepsat svou RNA do dvouřetězcové DNA a tu stabilně začlenit do genetické informace hostitelské buňky. Tato jejich vlastnost stojí za latencí viru HIV, která v současnosti představuje hlavní překážku v úspěšné léčbě HIV pozitivních pacientů. Na druhou stranu lze této jejich vlastnosti využít pro přenos genetické informace za účelem léčby četných chorob s využitím přístupů genové terapie. Since the early 20th century underdetermination has been one of the most contentious problems in the philosophy of science. In this article I relate the underdetermination problem to models in biology and defend two main lines of argument: First, the use of models in this discipline lends strong support to the underdetermination thesis. Second, models and theories in biology are not determined strictly by the logic of representation of the studied phenomena, but also by other constraints such as research traditions, backgrounds of the scientists, aims of the research and available technology. Convincing evidence for the existence of underdetermination in biology, where models abound, comes both from the fact that for a natural phenomenon we can create a number of candidate models but also from the fact that we do not have a universal rule that would adjudicate among them. This all makes a strong case for the general validity of the underdetermination thesis., Nedourčenost je jedním ze zásadních problémů filosofie vědy od počátku 20. století. Ve svém příspěvku vztahuju tezi o nedourčenosti k biologickým modelům a obhajuju následující dva argumenty: Za prvé, použití modelů v této disciplíně dodává silnou váhu tezi o nedourčenosti. Za druhé, modely a teorie v biologii nejsou determinovány striktně logikou reprezentace studovaného jevu, ale také dalšími faktory, jako jsou výzkumné tradice, background vědců, cíle výzkumu a dostupné technologie. Přesvědčivý důkaz o existenci nedourčenosti v biologii, která modelů v hojné míře využívá, pramení nejenom z faktu, že pro každý přírodní jev můžeme vytvořit velký počet alternativních modelů, ale také z faktu, že nedisponujeme univerzálním pravidlem pro výběr mezi nimi. Již pošesté se sešla odborná porota složená z fotografů a zároveň vědců, aby zhodnotila příspěvky zaslané do soutěže Věda je krásná. Do ročníku 2014 bylo zasláno celkem 529 příspěvků. Z celkového počtu 7 kategorií patřilo pět výhradně zaměstnancům a studentům Univerzity Karlovy. Objevitelskou kategorii a nově ustavenou kategorii Instagram, otevřenou široké veřejnosti, hodnotila porota složená z pracovníků Přírodovědecké fakulty UK v Praze. Diváci pak rozhodli o vítězi ve vlastním hlasování. V uplynulém ročníku zaujaly nejvíce mikrofotografie a snímky využívající složité postupy. Věda je krásná ale není jen soutěží mikrofotografií, velký prostor zůstává vymezen klasickým fotografiím a ilustracím, v r. 2014 poprvé také snímkům pořízeným ve výše zmíněné mobilní aplikaci., A specialist panel made up of photographers and scientists assessed 529 contributions sent in to the Science is Beautiful competition 2014. V dějinách idejí se vitalismu dostalo různých definic a různé postavy byly označeny za vitalisty. Proto patří k obyvatelům převážně subtropických a tropických oblastí, ale v opakovaných vlnách osídlovala i různá místa střední Evropy. Postupná expanze druhu probíhá i v České republice. Článek popisuje možnosti podpory hnízdění vlhy pestré na příkladu mokřadu Betlém na jižní Moravě., Merops apiaster is a termophilic insectivorous bird species.
