The GRACE satellites have provided gravity field solutions with approximately monthly resolution since April 2002. The monthly solutions enable investigations of the annual, semi-annual and secular mass variations, which mainly occur in a thin layer of the Earth’s surface. By the end of the GRACE science mission in 2017, the time span has increased to 15 years, making the possibility of determining longer-period variations feasible. First attempts to determine multi-annual variations, i.e. periods of some years but less than 10, are presented in this study. A combination of 3 different PSD estimation methods has been used for identifying the regions of multi-annual mass variations. As a result, 8 different areas have been found with significant multi-annual mass variations. UK-Slovenian collaborative research connected to EU COST-Action 625 began in 2003 and has involved interdisciplinary research into the current activity, structural architecture and landscape expression of the Ravne and Idrija strike-slip fault systems in NW Slovenia. The Ravne fault may be the best exposed actively propagating strike-slip fault system in Europe and through combined structural fieldwork, earthquake seismology and airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) surveys, a new understanding of the fault’s along-strike segmentation, three dimensional geometry and stepover zone kinematics has been gained. The Idrija Fault in contrast, is poorly exposed, but defines a regional lineament with an intensely brecciated fault core; it may have been responsible for the largest historical earthquake to have ever affected the region. Cardiovascular dynamic and variability data are commonly used in experimental protocols involving cognitive challenge. Usually, the analysis is based on a sometimes more and sometimes less well motivated single specific time resolution ranging from a few seconds to several minutes. The present paper aimed at investigating in detail the impact of different time resolutions of the cardiovascular data on the interpretation of effects. We compared three template tasks involving varying types of challenge, in order to provide a case study of specific effects and combinations of effects over different time frames and using different time resolutions. Averaged values of hemodynamic variables across an entire protocol confirmed typical findings regarding the effects of mental challenge and social observation. However, the hemodynamic response also incorporates transient variations in variables reflecting important features of the control system response. The fine-grained analysis of the transient behavior of hemodynamic variables demonstrates that information that is important for interpreting effects may be lost when only average values over the entire protocol are used as a representative of the system response. The study provides useful indications of how cardiovascular measures may be fruitfully used in experiments involving cognitive demands, allowing inferences on the physiological processes underlying the responses., H. Growth of the A549 cell line in a perfusion system suitable for use in a magnetic resonance study has been characterized and shown to be stable physiologically and hence appropriate for serial observations. Several methods of monitoring cell growth were compared to assess the behavior of the cells in this system. Comparison between NMR metabolite data and cell growth via cell counting showed that 31P NMR signals accurately reported cell doubling time. In contrast to most NMR cell culture systems, viable cells can be recovered from the perfusion system after the NMR measurements for further biochemical studies. These data further suggest that this system will be useful for studying the physiology and biochemistry of exponentially growing cells for at least two days in NMR tube culture., E. G. Shankland, J. Cíl: Zhodnotit zkušenosti se zobrazením nádorů prsu na 3T MRI pomocí osmnáctikanálové cívky a multiparametrického hodnocení nálezů. Metodika. Byly porovnány výsledky hodnocení 3T MRI prsů s operačními nálezy u 25 žen s 26 operovanými prsy, průměrný věk žen byl 51,8 v rozpětí 25-67 let. Vyšetřovací protokol zahrnoval provedení morfologického zobrazení, difuzního zobrazení, hodnocení dynamiky sycení tkání včetně farmakodynamické analýzy a hodnocení podílu cholinu ve spektru jednovoxelové MR spektroskopie. Výsledky: V souboru byla dosažena senzitivita pro odhalení maligního ložiska v prsu 100% (18/18), specifkita byla 87,5 % (7/8). Nejvyšší dílčí senzitivitu i specificitu vykazovala restrikce difúze 88,9 % (16/18) a 87,5 % (7/8) následovaná spektroskopií - senzitivita 72,2 % (13/18), specifita 87,5 % (7/8). Při detekci uzlinových metastáz v axile bylo dosaženo senzitivity i specificity shodně 83.3 %. Závěr: Multiparametrické zobrazení karcinomu prsu je vysoce senzitivní a relativně specifickou metodou detekce karcinomu prsu, spolehlivost hodnocení uzlinových metastáz je rovněž uspokojivá., Aim: To evaluate the experience with breast tumors imaging on three-Tesla MRI using dedicated eighteen-channel breast coil and multiparametric assessment. Method: The results of the 3T MRI were compared with those obtained by the histopathological evaluation of the resected breasts. The mean age of women was 51.8 y with the range 25 to 67 y The imaging protocol included the morphological imaging, diffusion imaging, assessment of the dynamic enhancement of the tissue including pharmacodynamic analysis and the assessment of the choline content within the spectrum of the single-voxel MR spectroscopy. Results: The sensitivity of 100% (18/18), specificity of 87.5% (7/8) was reached in detection of the malignant tumor. The highest particular sensitivity and specificity showed restriction of diffusion 88.9% (16/18) a 87.5% (7/8) followed by the spectroscopy - sensitivity 72.2% (13/18), specificity 87.5% (7/8). In the detection of the axillary lymph nodes metastases, the sensitivity both with specificity reached 83.3%. The jugular venous system constitutes the primary venous drainage of the head and neck. It includes a profundus or subfascial venous system, formed by the two internal jugular veins, and a superficial or subcutaneous one, formed by the two anterior and two external jugular veins. We report one case of unilateral anatomical variations of the external and anterior jugular veins. Particularly, on the right side, three external jugular veins co-existed with two anterior jugular veins. Such a combination of venous anomalies is extremely rare. The awareness of the variability of these veins is essential to anesthesiologists and radiologists, since the external jugular vein constitutes a common route for catheterization. The taxonomy of Diplectanum Diesing, 1858, a genus of monopisthocotylean monogeneans, remains unsettled and needs to be revised based on new morphological criteria. Recent studies in monopisthocotyleans have shown that the muscle arrangement in the posterior attachment organ (haptor) differs between congeneric species and can be used as an additional criterion in genus-level taxonomy. To explore the possibility of using the haptoral musculature and nervous system in the taxonomy of Diplectanum, we conducted a detailed confocal-microscopy study of three species of Diplectanum (D. aculeatum Parona et Perugia, 1889, D. sciaenae van Beneden et Hesse, 1863 and D. similis Bychowsky, 1957) with phalloidin staining for muscle and indirect immunostaining for 5HT and FMRFamide. A further goal was to clarify the functional mechanics of the haptor and the role of its essential components (squamodiscs and anchors) in attachment to the host. The system of connecting bars and gaffing anchors was found to have a complex musculature consisting of 23 muscles in D. aculeatum and D. sciaenae, and 21 muscles in D. similis. The squamodiscs were shown to be operated by several groups of muscles attached primarily to the area termed the squamodisc fulcrum. Most of the haptoral musculature is identical in D. aculeatum and D. sciaenae and these species differ only in the presence of a muscle sheath around the tissue strand between the squamodiscs in D. sciaenae and in the different patterns of superficial squamodisc muscles. Diplectanum similis shows more significant differences from the other two species: besides lacking two of the haptoral muscles, it also differs in the shapes and arrangement of several other muscles. Our aim in this paper is to study Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces. We consider a Hajłasz-type condition and a Newtonian condition. We prove that Lipschitz continuous functions are dense, as well as other basic properties. We study the relationship between these spaces, and discuss the Lebesgue point theorem in these spaces. We also deal with the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on Musielak-Orlicz spaces. As an application of the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, we establish a generalization of Sobolev’s inequality for Sobolev functions in Musielak-Orlicz-Hajłasz-Sobolev spaces., Takao Ohno, Tetsu Shimomura., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
We define and study Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev spaces with zero boundary values on any metric space endowed with a Borel regular measure. We extend many classical results, including completeness, lattice properties and removable sets, to Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces. We give sufficient conditions which guarantee that a Sobolev function can be approximated by Lipschitz continuous functions vanishing outside an open set. The long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a monogenic disorder characterized by prolongation of the QT interval on electrocardiogram and syncope or sudden death caused by polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (torsades de pointes). In general, mutations in cardiac ion channel genes (KCNQ1, KCNH2, SCN5A, KCNE1, KCNE2) have been identified as a cause for LQTS. About 50-60 % of LQTS patients have an identifiable LQTS causing mutation in one of mentioned genes. In a group of 12 LQTS patients with no identified mutations in these genes we have tested a hypothesis that other candidate genes could be involved in LQTS pathophysiology. SCN1B and KCND3 genes encode ion channel proteins, ANK2 gene encodes cytoskeletal protein interacting with ion channels. To screen coding regions of genes SCN1B, KCND3, and 10 exons of ANK2 following methods were used: PCR, SSCP, and DNA sequencing. Five polymorphisms were found in screened candid ate genes, 2 polymorphisms in KCND3 and 3 in SCN1B. None of found polymorphisms has coding effect nor is located close to splice sites or has any similarity to known splicing enhancer motifs. Polymorphism G246T in SCN1B is a novel one.
