Cold hardiness of larvae of the summer fruit tortrix moth, Adoxophyes orana (Fischer von Rosslerstamm) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was examined in the laboratory. Supercooling point of field collected larvae increased significantly from a mean value of -23.9°C in February 1998 to -16.9°C in June 1998. Mean supercooling points for laboratory diapause and non-diapause larvae were -20.7°C and -17.2°C respectively. Short period of acclimation (10 days at 0°C) significantly decreased supercooling point to -24.7°C for laboratory diapause larvae. Acclimation for 12 days at 5°C decreased supercooling point to -19.4°C for non-diapause larvae. Pre-freeze mortality for diapause and non-diapause larvae was also studied. Constant exposure of diapause larvae at -5°C resulted in high mortality (63.1%) after a period of 30 days. in contrast, only 6 days at -5°C were sufficient to cause 100% mortality of non-diapause larvae. The Chinese pine caterpillar Dendrolimus tabulaeformis is an important destructive leaf borer in boreal coniferous forests in China. This species overwinters in the larval stage. Changes in supercooling capacity and physiological-biochemical parameters of D. tabulaeformis larvae from a natural population were evaluated at different stages during the overwintering period. Cold hardiness of overwintering larvae collected in January was significantly greater than that of larvae collected in other months. January larvae survived for 15 days at -10°C and for approximately 2 days at -15°C. By contrast, larvae collected in September survived for no more than 4 h at -5°C and those in November and March no more than 1 day at -15°C. Supercooling point gradually decreased from -5.9 ± 0.3°C in September to a minimum of -14.1 ± 1.0°C in November, then gradually increased to the original value with the advent of spring. Water content gradually decreased from September to November, remained at approximately 74.5% until March and then gradually increased to levels similar to those in September. The lipid content gradually decreased from September to November, remained stable at approximately 3.2% until March and then gradually increased to levels similar to those in September. Glycogen content increased to a peak in November and then decreased. The concentrations of several metabolites showed significant seasonal changes. The most prominent metabolite was trehalose with a seasonal maximum in November. Glucose levels were highest in January and then gradually decreased until in May they were at levels similar to those in September. Glycerol levels remained relatively stable during winter but increased significantly in May. This study indicates that D. tabulaeformis is a freeze-avoidant insect. We investigated the physiological adaptations for winter survival in a freeze-intolerant chrysomelid, Aulacophora nigripennis, in warm-temperate regions. The adults showed a decreased supercooling point (SCP), increased chill tolerance and high myo-inositol content during winter. The main pathological condition in patients with impaired wound healing is diabetes mellitus. These patients have significantly low circulating nitric oxide (NO) levels because the stimulatory action of insulin on NO synthesis is absent. Additionally, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an inhibitor of NO synthase, is increased owing to the generation of oxidative stress. NO was thought to contribute to wound healing. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment is generally used in order to accelerate the healing of wounds. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in plasma procollagen type I and III N-terminal peptides (PINP and PIIINP), total nitrite/nitrate (NOx) and ADMA levels; and to evaluate their relation to healing during the HBO treatment of foot ulcers. Data obtained from 18 diabetic patients before and after the HBO therapy were compared statistically by the Wilcoxon test. NOx was increased in 11 and ADMA was decreased in 12 patients following HBO treatment. Both PINP (32.6±29.4 μg/l vs 44.3±33.4 μg/l) and PIIINP (6.97±3.01 μg/l vs 7.92±2.49 μg/l) were significantly increased (p<0.05). Progressive reductions were observed in wound areas, as assessed by the digital wound imaging. In 12 patients, wounds healed by 50 % or higher; whereas only two subjects had minimal improvements (15 % or less healing). The duration of diabetes correlated negatively with wound healing (r = -498, p<0.05). This study suggests that increased collagen synthesis is associated with wound healing during hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Nitric oxide generation may also contribute to the healing process., F. During shock, prognosis of a patient depends largely on intestinal barrier function. The potency of gut epithelium to represent an obstacle to toxins is determined by the blood supply. All established methods of mucosal function determination necessitate the functional involvement of bloodstream. Microdialysis allows monitoring of extracellular substances in the gut submucosa, but its potential use for gut barrier integrity assessment is unknown. Twelve rats underwent perfusion of the descending colon either with 20 % ethanol or control medium (vehicle). Both media contained equal amounts of a radioactive tracer substance (51Cr-EDTA). Mucosal permeability for 51Cr-EDTA was assessed by microdialysate to luminal perfusate activity ratios. Sampling was performed using the colon submucosal microdialysis technique. The group subjected to ethanol treatment had profound macro- and microscopical alterations in perfused colonic segment associated with a significant increase in tracer permeability during ethanol exposure (2.354±0.298 % for ethanol as opposed to 0.209±0.102 % for control group, p<0.01), which remained elevated for 60 min after cessation of ethanol administration (3.352±0.188 % for ethanol compared to 0.140± 0.0838 % for the control group, p<0.001). Submucosal microdialysis with radioactive tracer substance can be considered a feasible and advantageous alternative of gut barrier function estimation. The combination method of results of different space geodetic techniques gives two kinds of products. On the one hand, the Earth orientation parameters (EOP) that define the orientation of the Earth in space and, on the other, the coordinates of collocation stations by them the ITRF is realized. Obtained results are based on the method developed by authors, so called “non-rigorous” combination of the data. Combined administration of drugs elevating extracellular adenosine, namely dipyridamole and adenosine monophosphate, together with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor was shown to enhance granulopoietic recovery in the bone marrow of mice treated with 5-fluorouracil. Enhanced regeneration was found both at the level of hematopoietic progenitor cells for granulocytes and macrophages and in the compartment of morphologically recognizable granulocyte precursors. The results might have positive clinical impact. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that chronic hypoxia would aggrav ate hypertension in Ren-2 transgenic rats (TGR), a well-defined monogenetic model of hypertension with increased ac tivity of endogenous renin- angiotensin system (RAS). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) in conscious rats and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in anesthetized TGR and normotensive Hannover Sprague-Dawley (HanSD) rats were determined under normoxia that was either continuous or interrupted by two weeks' hypoxi a. Expression, activities and concentrations of individual components of RAS were studied in plasma and kidney of TGR and HanSD rats under normoxic conditions and after exposure to chronic hypoxia. In HanSD rats two weeks' exposure to chroni c hypoxia did not alter SBP and MAP. Surprisingly, in TGR it de creased markedly SBP and MAP; this was associated with substantial reduction in plasma and kidney renin activities and also of angiotensin II (ANG II) levels, without altering angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activities. Simultaneously, in TGR the exposu re to hypoxia increased kidney ACE type 2 (ACE2) activity and angiotensin 1-7 (ANG 1-7) concentrations as compared with TGR under continuous normoxia. Based on these results, we propose that suppression of the hypertensiogenic ACE-ANG II axis in the circulation and kidney tissue, combined with augmentation of the intrarenal vasodilator ACE2-ANG 1-7 axis, is the main mechanism responsible for the blood pressure-lowering effects of chronic hypoxia in TGR., L.
