The process of sedimentation and subsequent gravity compression of kaolin and water suspensions was investigated experimentally. 45 batch tests were carried out and the time dependence of the height of the suspension column was measured. The one-dimensional equations of Darcian mechanics of two-phase porous media are applied to formulate the studied process mathematically. A very natural assumption makes it possible to find a solution of the forward problem for a starting period of the process. Analysis of the theoretical function and the experimental data gives hydraulic conductivity as a function of the suspension concentration. The obtained results are presented and discussed.
The article is aimed at identifying the basic approaches for assessing the economic efficiency of public projects and their application whilst assessing the efficiency of preventive anti-flooding measures. One of the important things when deciding about applying these measures is information on what value of real estate assets these measures protect and what level of potential damages they are able to prevent. Within the research assignment, therefore, the issue of property indicators in the area is dealt with, based on which the value of real estate assets in the area can be determined, and subsequently the amount of damage can be specified for when the area is hit by potential natural disasters (flood) by using damage curves processed for individual representatives of real estate property. This problem is solved in the ''Procedures for supporting decision-making in the field of securing the stability of the area in terms of possible flooding'' grant project No. 103/05/0016 with support of the Czech Science Foundation. Pro rozhodování o uskutečnění těchto opatření je mimo jiné důležitá informace, jakou hodnotu nemovitého majetku tato opatření chrání, případně jak vysokým škodám jsou schopna zabránit. V rámci výzkumného projektu je proto řešena problematika územních majetkových ukazatelů, na základě kterých lze stanovit hodnotu nemovitého majetku v území a následně při zasažení území potenciální živelní pohromou - povodní s využitím křivek poškození zpracovaných pro jednotlivé reprezentanty nemovitého majetku vyčíslit výši škody. Tato problematika je řešena v grantovém projektu č. 103/05/0016 s názvem ''Postupy pro podporu a rozhodování v oblasti stavebních investic při zajištění stability území z pohledu možného zaplavení'' za podpory Grantové agentury České republiky. The finite volume method is applied for solving the conservative Saint-Venant equations in case of a one-dimensional open channel flow with high temporal and spatial variability. A new shock-capturing discretisation scheme is proposed for computation of flow equations with source terms. The proposed scheme, called hybrid, combines adventages of flux-splitting and flux-difference-splitting schemes. Five benchmark tests are used to verify the hybrid scheme. The tests are: (1) Flow in a rectangular cross-section rough channel, (2) instantaneous dambreak over an horizontal, initially dry bed, (3) undercritical flow over a bump, (4) undercritical flow over a bump with change to supercritical flow, and (5) supercritical flow over a bump with hydraulic jump. The quality of the proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with that of well known flux-splitting and flux-difference-splitting schemes, on the base of the average percentual error. Results show that the hybrid scheme has a good precision for calculation of highly unsteady, varied flow and that the model is able to consider a partially dry bed. The average percentual errors of the computations ranged from 0.0 to 5.4 % for flow depth and from 0.0 to 6.3 % for specific discharge. and Metoda konečných objemů se používá při řešení Saint-Venantových rovnic pro jednorozměrné proudění v otevřeném kanále a při velkých časových a prostorových změnách. V práci je navrženo nové diskretizační schéma schopné zachytit rázové jevy pro řešení tokových rovnic se zdrojovými členy. Navržený postup nazýváme hybridním, neboť kombinuje výhody modelování pomocí dvou schémat, nazývaných fluxsplitting a flux-difference-splitting. Pro ověření hybridního schématu bylo testováno pět různých uspořádání. Byly zkoušeny: 1. proudění v drsném korytě s obdélníkovým průřezem, 2. okamžitý vtok do horizontálního původně suchého koryta, 3. podkritické proudění přes práh, 4. podkritické proudění přes práh s přechodem na nadkritické proudění a 5. nadkritické proudění přes práh s hydraulickým skokem. Kvalita navrženého postupu je vyhodnocena a porovnána s výsledky získanými pomocí známých výše uvedených schémat. Byly vyhodnoceny průměrné chyby v procentech. Výsledky naznačují, že hybridní schéma vykazuje dobrou přesnost při výpočtu neustáleného, proměnlivého proudění, a že tento model je schopen vzít v úvahu částečně suché koryto. Průměrné chyby v procentech se pohybovaly od nuly do 5,4 % pro hloubku a od nuly do 6,3 % pro specifický průtok.

This paper is concerned with the determination of the relationship for the calculation of the discharge coefficient at free overflow over a rectangular sharp-edged broad-crested weir without lateral contraction. The determination was made on the basis of new measurement in a range of the relative thickness of the weir from 0.12 to 0.30 and newly in a large range of relative height of the weir extremely from 0.24 to 6.8 which greatly expands the application possibilities of low weirs. In addition, the effects of friction and surface tension on the value of the discharge coefficient were evaluated as well as the effect of the relative thickness of the weir. The new equation for discharge coefficient, expressed using the relative height of the weir, was subjected to verification made by an independent laboratory which confirmed its accuracy.
The impact of floodplain hydrology on the in-stream dissolved oxygen dynamics and the relation between dissolved oxygen and water temperature are investigated. This has been done by examining the time series of dissolved oxygen and water temperature coupled with meteorological and hydrological data obtained from two lowland rivers having contrasting hydrological settings. Spectral analysis of long-term oxygen variations in a vegetated river revealed a distinct scaling regime with slope ‘-1’ indicating a self-similar behaviour. Identical slopes were obtained for water temperature and water level. The same power-law behaviour was observed for an unvegetated river at small timescales revealing the underlying scaling behaviour of dissolved oxygen regime for different types of rivers and over various time scales. The results have shown that the oxygenation of a vegetated river is strongly related to its thermal regime and flow conditions. Moreover, analysis of short-term fluctuations in the unvegetated river demonstrated that physical factors such as rainfall and backwaters play a substantial role in the functioning of this ecosystem. Finally, the results show that the relation between water temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration at the diurnal timescale exhibits a looping behaviour on the variable plot. The findings of this study provide an insight into the sensitivity of rivers to changing hydro-physical conditions and can be useful in the assessment of environmental variability.
Distribution of a word across contexts has proved to be a very useful ap- proximation of the word’s meaning. This paper reflects on the recent attempts to enhance distributional (or vector space) semantics of words with meaning composition, in particular with Fregean compositionality. I discuss the nature and performance of distributional semantic representations and argue against the thesis that semantics is in some sense identical with distribution (which seems to be a strong assumption of the compositional efforts). I propose instead that distribution is merely a reflection of semantics, and a substantially imperfect one. That raises some doubts regarding the very idea of obtaining semantic representations for larger wholes (phrases, sentences) by combining the distributional representations of particular items. In any case, I reject the generally unquestioned assumption that formal semantics provides a good theory of semantic composition, which it would be desirable to combine with distributional semantics (as a theory that is highly successful on the lexical field). I suggest that a positive alternative to the strong reading of the distributional hypothesis can be seen in the philosophy of inferentialism with respect to language meaning. I argue that the spirit of inferentialism is reasonably compatible with the current practice of distributional semantics, and I discuss the motivations for as well as the obstacles in the way of implementing the philosophical position in a computational framework., Ukázalo se, že rozložení slova napříč kontextem je velmi užitečným přiblížením významu slova. Místo toho navrhuji, aby distribuce byla pouze odrazem sémantiky a podstatně nedokonalým. To vyvolává určité pochybnosti o samotné myšlence získat sémantické reprezentace pro větší celky (fráze, věty) kombinací distribučních reprezentací jednotlivých položek. Laboratory studies were conducted to characterise the sorption-desorption behavior of four human pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine, diclofenac, gemfibrozil, and ibuprofen) at three initial concentrations in aqueous solution on one river sediment. The results of the experiments showed that distribution coefficients were either relatively low for diclofenac and ibuprofen or higher for gemfibrozil and carbamazepine. Distribution coefficients (mean Kd values for three initial concentrations), as measured by the batch experiments, were 4.21 ± 0.58 for diclofenac, 4.98 ± 0.29 for ibuprofen, 11.28 ± 1.22 for gemfibrozil, and 44.82 ± 14.89 for carbamazepine. Based on sorption data, migration potential of the pharmaceuticals in surface waters would decrease as follows: diclofenac > ibuprofen > gemfibrozil >> carbamazepine. Only 2.44 ± 1.05%, 3.67 ± 0.35% and 1.79 ± 1.17% of the initially sorbed ibuprofen, gemfibrozil and carbamazepine were desorbed during desorption period of 48 h, respectively. Diclofenac exhibited the highest desorption (15.01 ± 2.59%). Generally, the results indicate that significant amounts of the pharmaceuticals may be eliminated from surface waters via sorption by sediment and that observed low desorption would further limit their migration in surface waters. and Hlavným cieľom štúdie bol výskum sorpcie a desorpcie štyroch humánnych farmaceutík (karbamazepín, diklofenak, gemfibrozil a ibuprofén) pri troch počiatočných koncentráciách vo vodnom roztoku vo vzorke riečneho sedimentu. Výsledky experimentov ukázali, že rozdeľovacie koeficienty boli buď nižšie pre diklofenak a ibuprofén alebo zvýšené v prípade gemfibrozilu a karbamazepínu. Stanovené hodnoty rozdeľovacích koeficientov (priemerné hodnoty Kd pre všetky tri počiatočné koncentrácie) boli 4,21 ± 0,58 pre diklofenak, 4,98 ± 0,29 pre ibuprofén, 11,28 ± 1,22 pre gemfibrozil a 44,82 ± 14,89 pre karbamazepín. Podľa stanovených hodnôt Kd sa bude mobilita skúmaných farmaceutík v povrchových vodách znižovať v poradí: diklofenak > ibuprofén > gemfibrozil >> karbamazepín. Vodou desorbovateľné podiely farmaceutík zo sedimentu boli nízke, pričom len 2,44 ± 1,05%, 3,67 ± 0,35% a 1,79 ± 1,17% z celkového sorbovaného množstva ibuprofénu, gemfibrozilu a karbamazepínu v sedimente sa počas desorpčného experimentu uvoľnilo späť do vody. Diklofenak vykazoval najvyšší rozsah desorpcie zo sedimentu (15,01 ± 2,59%). Všeobecne tieto výsledky naznačujú, že značné množstvá sledovaných farmaceutík môžu byť odstránené z povrchových vôd prostredníctvom sorpcie v sedimente a že pozorovaný nízky rozsah desorpcie bude ešte viac obmedzovať ich mobilitu v povrchových vodách.
