- Language:

- Description:
- Oxidative stress may be caused by an increased rate of ATP resynthesis during physical exercise. The aim of this study was to compare changes in the prooxidant-antioxidant state of blood plasma between men and women after maximal-intensity exercise, and to assess the relationship between these changes and the value of the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) as well as between these changes and the value of post-exercise disruptions in acid-base balance. Study participants comprised 10 women (20.7±0.5 years) and 10 men (22.3±0.5 years) who were physically active but did no t engage in competitive sports training. VO2max was determined via treadmill incremental test (VO2max relative to body mass: 44.48±1.21 ml/kg/min and 59.16±1.55 ml/kg/min for women and men, respectively). The level of acid-base balance indicators (ABB), lactate concentration (La-), the level of total oxidative status (TOS), the level of total antioxidative capacity (TAC), an d uric acid (UA) concentration were measured before and after the test. An oxidative stress indicator (OSI) was also calculated. Men showed a significant post-exercise increase in the level of TOS and OSI, while women showed a significant post-exercise increase in the level of TAC. Post-exercise changes in UA concentration were insignificant. Post-exercise changes in TOC in men depended on the absolute values of VO2max , on VO2max/LBM, and on post-exercise changes in La- concentration., M. Wiecek, M. Maciejczyk, J. Szymura, Z. 5. Cytosolic free calcium response to angiotensin II in aortic VSMC isolated from male and female SHR

- article, model:article, and TEXT
- Subject:
- spontaneously hypertensive rat, gender, primary culture, VSMC, angiotensin II, and cytosolic free calcium
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- Previous in vitro studies have shown that vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) isolated from the aortae of male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) proliferate more rapidly than those obtained from female SHR. Sex-dependent differences of cytosolic free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]j) were therefore studied in VSMC under basal conditions and after the stimulation by different concentrations of angiotensin II (Ang II). No significant difference in basal [Ca2+]i was found in VSMC from male and female SHR. Angiotensin II significantly increased |Ca2+], in VSMC from both genders. This [Ca2+]j rise elicited by 10'7 and 10~9 M Ang II was more pronounced in cells isolated from males than in those from females. This difference may be attributed to greater mobilisation of intracellular calcium stores in male VSMC. It can be concluded that the cytosolic free calcium response to angiotensin II is augmented in VSMC of male SHR, which also grow more rapidly in response to this peptide hormone.

- Description:
- It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that there are important differences of many cardiovascular disorders including ventricular tachycardias in men and women. Nevertheless, so far just few studies have addressed possible gender differences in electrophysiological characteristics of idiopathic ventricular tachycardia from right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT-VT), other than epidemiological ones. This study explored possible gender differences in electrophysiological characteristics and catheter ablation outcome in RVOT-VT patients. Ninety-three patients (mean age 38.7±15.5 years, 30 males) with idiopathic RVOT-VT were enrolled and analyzed in our study. Male patients had longer QRS width (99.9±19.4 ms vs. 88.4±20.7 ms, p=0.02). Female patients had lower right ventricular mean voltage (3.0±0.7 mV vs. 3.7±0.9 mV, p=0.03), and more low voltage zone over the right ventricular outflow tract free wall (27.0 % vs. 6.7 %, p=0.02). Eighty-one patients passed catheter ablation (23 males). The acute success rate, repeated catheter ablation rate and VT recurrence rate were similar in both genders. The present study provides evidence of the gender differences in electrophysiological findings in patients with idiopathic RVOT-VT. Studies on gender-specific differences in arrhythmia could lead to a better understanding of its mechanism(s) and provide valuable information for the development of optimal treatment strategies., S.-G.
