Various disturbances in forests often result in the formation of open habitats with characteristics that are distinctly different from those of the original forest (microclimate, illumination, stand age and composition). These disturbances affect the habitat heterogeneity in time and space and seem to drive forest succession and changes in biodiversity in forests. Little is known about how the colonization of deforested habitats by Orthoptera is influenced by environmental factors. We studied the association between the structure of orthopteran assemblages and the age of clear-cuts, vegetation structure and other environmental parameters (size, elevation, altitude). This involved 33 clear-cuts of three age categories in broadleaved forests dominated by European beech. The Orthoptera were sampled using sweep netting and by counting individuals recorded along transects that ran parallel to those used for recording the structure of the vegetation. We recorded significant differences in the number and abundance of species in the three age categories of clear-cuts. Grasshopper species were more abundant than bush-crickets in first year clear-cuts. Species capable of flight occured in all three age categories of clear-cuts (>62% of the 27 species recorded). All the species of Orthoptera identified were present in two year-old clear-cuts. The species composition and abundance of Ensifera and Caelifera differed in their association with the six vegetation parameters studied. While the Caelifera occurred in habitats with bare ground the Ensifera mainly occurred in those with a higher proportion of shrubs and trees. Response mechanisms of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), experimentally infected with a Danish strain of Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957 were investigated using molecular tools (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry. Expression of ten immune-relevant genes and reactivity with five different antibodies in the epidermis of skin and fin tissue were analysed in susceptible but responding rainbow trout. Rainbow trout were susceptible with regard to the parasite strain which initially colonised fins but relocated to the body region as infection progressed. The ten investigated genes encoding the cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-10 and markers for adaptive immune activity, such as CD-4, CD-8, TCR-α, IgM, IgT and MHC II, were not found significantly regulated during the course of infection although IFN-γ showed a slight up-regulation. Immunohistochemical analyses showed positive reactivity with antibodies against CD3, B-lymphocytes, neutrophilic granulocytes and collectin but not with mAb against IgM. No staining differences between infected and non-infected skin and fin tissue were detected.
In Indian agro-ecosystems Rhynocoris marginatus (F.) is one of the most abundant predatory arthropods and feeds on a wide range of insect pests. We investigated the responses of R. marginatus to six species of cotton pests: Spodoptera litura (F.), Sylepta derogata (F.), Pericallia ricini (F.), Mylabris indica (Thunberg), Mylabris pustulata (Thunberg) and Dysdercus cingulatus (F.), in terms of its predatory behaviour (approach and handling times), weight gain, macromolecular profile (content of carbohydrates, proteins, free aminoacids and lipids) and haemocytic profile. We also determined the predator's reliance on kairomones from different species of prey. Larvae of the species of Lepidoptera studied were approached and captured more quickly than adults of the two meloid coleopteran and one heteropteran pest and were more beneficial to the predator in terms of weight gain. Predators had a higher total protein content when reared on larvae of the three lepidopteran species, higher lipid content when reared on adults of the two meloid coleopteran species and a higher carbohydrate content when reared on adults of one heteropteran species. The number of haemocytes was greater in predators reared on larvae of the Lepidoptera studied, followed by those reared on adults of the heteropteran and lowest in those reared on adults of the two meloid coleopterans. Response to kairomones was strongest for S. litura followed by S. derogata and M. pustulata. We conclude that the Lepidoptera studied tended to be, for this predator, superior prey, with S. litura being especially beneficial and the prey species for which R. marginatus has the highest kairomonal preference. The water strider Aquarius paludum inhabits the surfaces of a wide variety of freshwater habitats both temporary and permanent. It can also live on the surface brackish-water around river mouths. Exposure to a brackish rather than freshwater environment may affect a range of adult and offspring life-history traits. In a two-stage experiment A. paludum offspring from fresh- (F) and brackish-water (B) populations were obtained and their offspring reared in either a fresh- or brackish-water (0.45% NaCl) environments. The four offspring treatment groups (F-F, F-B, B-F, B-B) varied in terms of the parental and offspring rearing environments. The effect of parental and offspring rearing environment on longevity, fecundity and flight was assessed. Offspring reared in a brackish environment throughout their larval and adult stages had a reduced longevity and egg production. The flight activity of the offspring originated from the brackish-water population was maintained when they were reared in a brackish environment, but inhibited when they were exposed to freshwater. Our results suggest that the life-history strategies depend critically on the degree of salinity in both the current environment and that of their parents.
The behavioural responses of two species of stored-product beetles, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val, to certain stimuli were studied in laboratory choice tests. The results of these experiments indicated that, with one species present, S. oryzae and T. confusum adults were equally attracted to traps baited with the aggregation pheromone of that species and to traps baited with both pheromones. In contrast, when both species were present, neither S. oryzae nor T. confusum showed specific behavioural trend towards a stimulus. Traps baited with 1 g of a mixture of plant extracts were significantly more attractive for both species than unbaited traps, but this response was highly influenced by the number of individuals of each species released. Traps baited with filter papers that were previously contaminated by live adults of both species were particularly attractive for S. oryzae, but not for T. confusum. Traps that contained 10 seeds damaged by S. oryzae were significantly more attractive than traps containing an oil lure or control traps for S. oryzae, but not for T. confusum. The addition of oil to the seeds did not affect the attractiveness of the trap for S. oryzae. Traps that contained 20 live S. oryzae adults were significantly more attractive than traps containing 20 dead S. oryzae adults or control traps. No significant differences were noted between traps containing 20 dead S. oryzae adults and control traps. The presence of S. oryzae adults in traps did not affect the response of T. confusum.
This study aimed to compare the effects of three different resistance exercise models on the quadriceps muscle crosssectional area, as well as on mTOR phosphorylation and other pivotal molecules involved in the upstream regulation of mTOR. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were divided into untrained (control), endurance resistance training, strength resistance training, and hypertrophy resistance training (HRT) groups (n=6). After 12 weeks of training, the red portion of the quadriceps was removed for histological and Western blot analyses. The results showed that the quadriceps weight and cross-sectional areas in the exercised groups were higher than those of the untrained rats. However, the HRT group presented better results than the other two experimental groups. This same pattern was observed for mTOR phosphorylation and for the most pivotal molecules involved in the upstream control of mTOR (increase of PKB, 14-3-3, ERK, p38 MAPK, and 4E-BP1 phosphorylation, and reduction of tuberin, sestrin 2, REDD1, and phospho AMPK). We studied the psychophysiology of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) in 25 apparently healthy middle-aged men who underwent an acute psychosocial stressor three times with one week apart. Measures of the biological stress response were obtained at week one and three. The magnitude of the sICAM-1 stress response showed no habituation between individual visits. At week one, cognitive stress appraisal independently predicted integrated sICAM-1 area under the curve (AUC) between rest, immediately post-stress, and 45 min and 105 min post-stress (β=0.67, p=0.012, ΔR2=0.41). Diastolic blood pressure AUC (β=-0.45, p=0.048, ΔR2=0.21) and heart rate AUC (β=0.44, p=0.055, ΔR2=0.21) were independent predictors of sICAM-1 AUC at week three. Adjustment for hemoconcentration yielded a decrease in sICAM-1 levels from rest to post-stress (p<0.001). Stress responsiveness of plasma sICAM-1 was predicted by stress perception and hemodynamic reactivity and affected by stress-hemoconcentration but unrelated to cortisol reactivity and not readily adapting to repeated stress., R. von Känel, D.
