The paper tries to analyze critically what is usually taken for granted - the causal relation between empirical knowledge about external world and the world which is (supposedly) known. The aim is neither to propose a new definition of knowledge nor to restate an old one but rather to take a closer look at the claim that knowledge is a true belief caused in a proper way by facts, events, etc. of the external world. This claim is a core of the epistemological approach usually labeled as ''causal theory of knowledge'', but there are many causal theories distinct from each other. The paper therefore sketches the causal components of D. Davidson’s epistemology and the roles they play in the process of cognizing, first. Then it exposes more details of Davidson’s approach and pushes some of them further critically., Příspěvek se snaží kriticky analyzovat, co je obvykle považováno za samozřejmost - kauzální vztah mezi empirickými znalostmi o vnějším světě a světě, který je (údajně) známý. Pak odhaluje více podrobností o Davidsonově přístupu a některé z nich kriticky posouvá dále., and Miloš Taliga
The Evolutionary Argument (EA) plays the central role in the realism- antirealism dispute. Proponents of this argument maintain that evolutionary theory pro- vides a convincing evidence for the reliability of our cognitive capacities. The evolutio- nary function of these capacities is to inform us about the character of our environment; and, as evidenced by the survival of our species, we can surmise that our cognitive capac- ities tend to provide a true, rather than false, picture of the world (cf., e.g., Quine, Kornblith, Munz). However, opponents of this view argue that evolutionary processes are not exclusively adaptive or optimal; indeed, some processes may not be adaptive at all (cf., e.g., Putnam, van Fraassen, Stich, and Bradie). Some of these critics, e.g., Thomson, believe that evolutionary theory demonstrates that our knowledge is not true, and that our cognitive capacities are not only fallible but completely unreliable. They produce only one of the many possible pictures of the world. I criticize this type of argument by means of a non-adaptationist interpretation of evolutionary theory (Wuketits), and I am seeking an evolutionary way out., Evoluční argument (EA) hraje ústřední roli v realisticko-antirealismickém sporu. Zastánci tohoto argumentu tvrdí, že evoluční teorie poskytuje přesvědčivý důkaz spolehlivosti našich kognitivních schopností. Důležitou funkcí těchto kapacit je informovat nás o charakteru našeho prostředí; a, jak dokazuje přežití našeho druhu, můžeme se domnívat, že naše kognitivní kapacity mají sklon poskytovat pravdivý, spíše než falešný obraz světa (srov. např. Quine, Kornblith, Munz). Nicméně, oponenti tohoto pohledu argumentují, že evoluční procesy nejsou výhradně adaptivní nebo optimální; některé procesy nemusí být vůbec adaptivní (srov. např. Putnam, van Fraassen, Stich a Bradie). Tento druh argumentů kritizuji prostřednictvím neadaptistické interpretace evoluční teorie (Wuketits) a hledám evoluční cestu ven., and Vladimír Havlík
By addressing fictional names head on, we risk going back to familiar, ordinary names intuitions and missing what is specific about them. I propose a different strategy. My view is grounded on fictional name sentence utterances and on indexed tokens of such sentences, where an index contains the fictional narrator and the time and location of the token. Using the framework of pluri-propositionalism (Perry 2012), I argue that the semantic relation of reference – ''x'' refers to y - where ''x'' is a name, rather than the notion of an object, is central to the debate on fictional names. I also contend that fictional names do not enter into that relation. Tokens of fictional names are individuated with the fictional index of the sentence they originate from. This allows for dispensing with a referent. Indexed fictional name sentence tokens have semantically determined truth conditions, yet they are not truth assessed given facts. In this respect, they have cognitive significance only, and no official or referential content. Indexed fictional name token of sentences are accepted as true, but they are not true. and Tím, že se zaměříme na smyšlené názvy, riskujeme, že půjdeme zpět ke známým, obyčejným názvům intuice a postrádáme, co je o nich specifické. Navrhuji jinou strategii. To umožňuje vynechání referenta.
Heideggerovým cílem je ukázat, že mathématický charakter moderní vědy rozhoduje o obecném chápání významu "bytí“ a že moderní věda nahrazuje metafyziku, v níž tkví její původ., In the mid of 1930s Martin Heidegger attempted to explain the
“history of Being” leading to what he called “the oblivion of Being". In this he focused on the impact of modern science, which he grants to be a sort of metaphysics. According to Heidegger, the main feature of the modern science consists in what he calls the mathéma -character. Th e Greek word “to mathéma” means “that what can be learned” and “what must be know beforehand.” It is Heidegger’s intention to show that the mathéma-character of modern science is deciding about the general understanding of the meaning of “being” and that modern science is replacing the metaphysics, which is the origin of the modern science., and Aleš Novák.
The article considers descriptive statements about languages and language phenomena and seeks to determine how such statements can be ''true''. Descriptive statements about languages are considered from the points of view of the correspondence and coherence theories of truth and from the point of view of hypothetico-deductive testing. It is argued that descriptive statements about languages are rationally discussable interpretations disciplined by what we can observe within a given paradigm, and that issues of truth and issues of empirical testing should be distinguished., Článek se zabývá popisnými výroky o jazycích a jazykových jevech a snaží se zjistit, jak mohou být tyto výroky ,,pravdivé''.
This study is concerned with interpretation of the Tractatus and the picture theory of the early-Wittgenstein from the perspective of the anti-metaphysical reading of M. McGinn and from the perspective of W. Sellars. I analyse McGinn's interpretation and the difficulties which are caused for her in her attempt to provide a non-minimalistic interpretation of Wittgenstein's picture theory. The interpretation of McGinn is then contrasted with Sellars who, unlike the majority of other interpreters, reads Wittgenstein's picture theory in a radically nominalistic way, and places little emphasis on the overall consistency of the Tractatus. I show that his approach allows one to preserve some interesting insights provided by McGinn, while it also manages to avoid the problems that beset her interpretation. Sellars' reading may therefore better serve McGinn's aims than her own reading, although it demands that we give up some of the key theses of the Tractatus. At the same time it may also lead us to a reevaluation of the relevance of the Tractatus for contemporary philosophical debates., Stefanie Dach., and Obsahuje poznámky a bibliografii
A significant and interesting part of the post-Gettier literature regarding the analysis of propositional knowledge is the attempt to supplement the traditional tripartite analysis by employing a fourth condition regarding the defeasibility of evidence and thus to preclude the counterexamples displayed in Gettier’s original article. My aim in this paper is to critically examine the sort of externalism that accompanies the most promising of the proposed fourth conditions, due to Pollock, in order to offer some fresh insights on this old epistemological issue. I argue that Pollock’s paradigmatic treatment of the matter gives rise to a critical problem with regard to the exact role of the fourth condition and its relation with the onto-semantic or alethic condition of propositional knowledge, to wit, truth. In the light of this discussion, I draw certain conclusions about epistemic externalism and point out some of its theoretical shortcomings., Významnou a zajímavou součástí post-gettierovské literatury týkající se analýzy výrokových poznatků je pokus doplnit tradiční tripartitní analýzu využitím čtvrté podmínky týkající se nedotknutelnosti důkazů a tím vyloučit protiklady uvedené v původním článku Gettiera.
Problém podrobne interpretujem v úzkom rozmedzí dvoch Nietzscheho textov, Lidské, příliš lidské (prvá hlava„O prvních a posledních věcech“) a Radostná věda (piata kapitola „My nebojácní“). The text traces the motif of the re-evaluation of the sense of knowing and thinking based on the function of error consisting in the claim to ground/truth in knowledge. I interpret the problem in detail in the narrow confines of Nietzsche’s two texts, Human, All Too Human (the first heading “On First and Last Things”) and the The Gay Science (fifth chapter “We the Fearless”). An analysis of error issues in the re-evaluation of the sense of knowledge which, subsequently, we can distinguish into the positive and negative. Negative knowledge is understood as basic, having sense, but not sense-seeking, which does not have knowledge as the assumed aim, but whose sense consists in its activity. Positive knowledge is conceptual knowledge which, once one perceives its basic non-functionality in the area of truth, gains the function of orientation. Thought, when it stops being focused on a product by the directed activity of a demarcated section of time, is a part of living and moving in the world. This, in the second part, is deepened in analyses of consciousness and knowledge from The Gay Science, which stress the meaning of the unthematised in thinking and knowledge, especially the picture of consciousness as a mirror. Here knowledge is understood as a conceptual construction of the ground by which the unthematised experience is individually lived. The error here is the need to transform the unknown into the known on the basis of fear. That need points to the unknown as the agent that reveals the problem which is necessary for the maintenance of knowledge., Daniela Šterbáková., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
The aim of this paper is to consider a possibility of understanding assertibility as a semantic concept. This leads to a nonstandard view of the relation and borderline between semantics and pragmatics. For the language of classical propositional logic entailment will be defined as a relation which preserves assertibility rather than truth and it will be shown that this enables us to model some linguistic phenomena in an adequate way., Cílem příspěvku je zvážit možnost pochopení asertivity jako sémantického konceptu.
The familiar division of political thinkers into moralists and realists leads the author to the question of how to classify Ladislav Hejdánek’s unique yet ambiguous approach to public weal and matters politic. Does Hejdánek base his understanding of democracy and liberalism (and of liberties an drights thereunto appertaining) on morality (on philosophy or on system theory) or does he recognise the primacy of matters politic? Though in Hejdánek’s writings moral appeals are frequent and fundamental, the author seeks to show that realism prevails. In the present text, the author delineates the specific realism of this Czech thinker more precisely by analysing Hejdánek’s texts, especially his Epistles to a Friend.
