Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is one of the most harmful plant viruses and one of its most important vectors is the western flower thrips [Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)]. Recently, we reported the close association of Erwinia sp. gut bacteria with this species of thrips. The first instar larvae acquire these bacteria from their food source. A high proportion of adult western flower thrips transmit TSWV after acquiring the virus during the first larval stage when there are no bacteria in their gut. A considerably lower proportion of adults that acquire the virus early in the second instar transmit virus and none of those exposed to virus late on in the second instar do so. The highest prevalence and total number of symbiotic bacteria are recorded in the guts of second instar thrips. This leads to the hypothesis that the build up of bacteria in the gut reduces the acquisition of TSWV, resulting in a lower capacity to transmit the virus. To test this hypothesis, the transmission of this virus by symbiotic and aposymbiotic adult thrips of the NL3 population was studied. Comparison of virus transmission by adult thrips, the larvae of which either had or lacked gut bacteria and were exposed to virus in either the first or second instar, revealed no difference in the ability of symbiotic and aposymbiotic adults to transmit this virus. Některé mořské krevety (Caridea) žijí v symbiotických asociacích se sasankami (Actiniaria). Článek přibližuje výhodnost tohoto soužití, způsob aklimatizace krevet na žahavé buňky sasanek a příklady druhů žijících v Rudém moři. and Marine true shrimps (Caridea) are swimming decapod crustaceans. Some of them live in symbiotic associations with sea anemones (Actinaria). The article presents the co-existence and the way in which shrimps have been adapted to cnidocytes of the anemones.
Většina krevet čeledi Palaemonidae obývajících tropická a subtropická moře Atlantského, Indického a Tichého oceánu se adaptovala k symbiózám se zástupci řady kmenů bezobratlých živočichů. Nejširší zastoupení symbiotických krevet je mezi těmi, které jsou ektosymbioticky vázány na těla žahavců, je mezi nimi i řada čističů ryb. Známa jsou i podobná soužití s ostnokožci, ale najdeme je i jako endosymbionty v mořských houbách, mlžích a v sumkách. Evoluce těchto korýšů byla zjevně úzce spojena se změnou hostitelských organizmů. Most frequent are ecto-symbioses with cnidarians, including several cases of fish-cleaners. Similar associations are known with echinoderms, and other remarkable examples include endo-symbioses of shrimp with sponges, shrimp with bivalve molluscs, and shrimp with ascidians. Evolution of those shrimp was, evidently, closely related to multiple host-switching events. Úvod: Sympatická kožní odpověď (SSR) je jednoduchý a široce dostupný test sudomotorických funkcí. Jedná se o polysynaptický reflex s variabilní aferentací a eferentní částí, zprostředkovanou tenkými nemyelinizovanými vlákny typu C. Cílem práce bylo zhodnocení validity SSR v diagnostice neuropatie s postižením tenkých senzitivních nervových vláken. Metodika: SSR byla vyšetřena na horních a dolních končetinách u 69 pacientů s bolestivou periferní neuropatií. U 33 pacientů této skupiny šlo o izolovanou neuropatii tenkých nervových vláken (NTV). Třicet šest pacientů mělo kombinované postižení vláken tenkých a silných. Nálezy byly srovnány se souborem 89 zdravých kontrol. Hodnocena byla výbavnost odpovědí elektrickým proudem a prudkým inspiriem a jejich reprodukovatelnost, amplituda a latence. Výsledky: Hodnocení latencí ani amplitud odpovědí neprokázalo jasný přínos pro diagnostiku postižení tenkých nervových vláken. Nejspolehlivější typ SSR abnormity je tedy nevýbavnost odpovědí. Postižení tenkých autonomních vláken však bylo v našem souboru pomocí SSR prokazatelné pouze u malé části pacientů se senzitivní neuropatií – senzitivita dosáhla necelých 10 % u pacientů s čistou NTV a 33 % u pacientů s kombinovaným postižením vláken tenkých a silných (u nichž je současně pravděpodobnější těžší stupeň postižení vláken tenkých). Závěr: Při zohlednění nízké senzitivity není SSR optimální metoda využitelná jako jediný diagnostický test neuropatie tenkých vláken., Introduction: Sympathetic skin response (SSR) is a simple and widely available test of sudomotor functions. Afferent part of this polysynaptic reflex is variable, while the efferent direction of the reflex arch is via thin unmyelinated C fibres. No reliable study of the SSR diagnostic validity in patients with sensory small fiber neuropathy (SFN) has so far been published. In clinical practice, however, we repeatedly meet patients, who have been diagnosed with SFN based solely on abnormal SSR. The aim of the study was to evaluate diagnostic validity of SSR in patients with sensory small fibre neuropathy. Methods: SSR was recorded from palms and soles of 69 patients with painful sensory neuropathy (33 of them with pure SFN and 36 with mixed small and large nerve fibre dysfunction) using electrical stimulation and inspiratory gasp stimuli. Small nerve fiber involvement was confirmed by reduced intraepidermal nerve fiber densities in skin biopsy samples of all cases. The results were compared with those of 89 healthy controls. The outcome for health controls were also used to establish age-stratified normative data. We assessed electric stimuli and sudden inspiration response recall end their reproducibility, amplitude and latency. Results: Both the SSR latencies and amplitudes showed very low diagnostic validity in small fibre neuropathy patients. The absence of SSR response represented the most reliable abnormality. However, using this parameter, dysfunction of small autonomic nerve fibres has only been found in a small part of our sensory neuropathy patients: sensitivity did not exceed 10% in pure SFN patients and 33% in those with mixed small and large nerve fibre dysfunction (where more pronounced small sensory nerve fibre involvement has previously been found). Conclusion: Considering its low sensitivity, SSR should not be used as the only test to confirm sensory small fibre neuropathy. Atraktivita, včetně obličeje, je pod vlivem evolučních teorií spojována s mládím, reprodukcí a výběrem potenciálního partnera. Za fyzicky atraktivní je v tomto smyslu považována tvář ženy, která vykazuje jasné pohlavně dimorfní (femininní) znaky, je souměrná (symetrická), s průměrnými proporcemi a eventuelně se ostatním jeví jako povědomá. Valná většina prací zabývající se obličejovou atraktivitou využívá k jejímu zhodnocení statických fotografií tváří mladých žen, jejichž věkový průměr nepřesahuje 25 let. Smyslem předkládané studie není upřít mládí jeho atraktivitu, ale pokouší se najít odpověď na otázku, zdali i tvář ženy nesoucí již známky stárnutí, je ostatními jako fyzicky atraktivní vnímatelná. S tímto cílem bylo k hodnocení v předkládané studii využito obličejových fotografií žen ve věku 50 – 65 let, které z hlediska atraktivity hodnotilo 120 respondentů stratifikovaných dle věku a pohlaví do 4 podskupin – mladší ženy (RZM), mladší muži (RMM), starší ženy (RZS) a starší muži (RMS). Ukázalo se, že spojovat stárnutí s fyzickou atraktivitou je pro hodnotitele nepřirozené a tváře, které podle svých slov označili jako „sympatické“, v nich na první pohled vzbuzovaly dojem dobrého charakteru. Zdá se tedy, že u stárnoucích žen je ostatními ceněna spíše jejich „vnitřní krása“ a tím atraktivita osobní v podobě vlastností, postojů, názorů, hodnot či zájmů, které si respondenti do tváří pro ně atraktivních žen promítají. and Attractiveness, including the face, is under the influence of evolutionary theory associated with youth, reproduction and a mate selection. The physically attractive face in this sense is a woman's face with clear sexually dimorphic (feminine) characters, symmetrical with average proportions and that, which possibly seems familiar to them. The vast majority of work dealing with a facial attractiveness uses for its assessment the static photographs of young women faces, whose average age does not exceed 25 years. The purpose of this study is not to deny the attractiveness of youth, but it is trying to find an answer to the question of whether even woman’s face bearing the signs of aging could be perceived as attractive by others. It was therefore used facial photographs of women aged between 50-65 years for evaluation, which were rated by 120 respondents, stratified by age and sex into four sub-groups - younger women, younger men, older women and older men. It turned out that to associate aging with a physical attractiveness is for evaluators unnatural and faces, which, by their own words, have been marked as „sympathetic“ gave to them the impression of a good character at first glance. It seems therefore, that in aging women is valued by others rather their "inner beauty" and a personal attractiveness in the form of traits, attitudes, beliefs, values or interests that respondents can project to, for them attractive, older women face.
