The Institute of Plasma Physics of the ASCR has produced a book, Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion for Everybody, which covers the story of the human struggle to achieve controlled thermonuclear fusion on Earth. The book is “reader-friendly” in that special attention has been given to plain vocabulary and rich illustration. The topic is introduced with a detailed chronology of fusion history. The contribution of Oleg Lavrentyev, a pioneer of the Soviet fusion program, is recognized since he is credited as being the first to call attention to fusion in correspondence with his government in 1949 and 1950. These letters aroused the interest of physicists Igor Tamm and Andrei Sakharov who launched a fusion program that resulted in the creation of Tokamak, a device which uses a magnetic field to confine plasma in the shape of a torus (doughnut). and Luděk Svoboda.

Součástí tektonických změn, kterými dnes prochází akademické prostředí napříč obory, je specifický - a na první pohled triviální - rys. Vědci publikují čím dál více odborných článků a knih. Globální akademické publikace rostou meziročně o osm až devět procent, což znamená, že se jejich objem zdvojnásobí asi každých devět let. Tento trend je znatelný i v České republice. V roce 2013 byla druhým největším celostátním nakladatelstvím, co se počtu vydaných titulů týče, Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci (vydala v daném roce skoro 500 titulů), Univerzita Karlova byla pátým největším (asi 360) a Masarykova univerzita sedmým (310 knih). V současném systému hodnocení a financování vědy není příliš ojedinělým jevem, když humanitně a společenskovědně orientovaní akademici produkují pět až šest článků a jednu až dvě knihy ročně - aby si udrželi zaměstnání, dosáhli na rozumný plat, splnili (grantový) plán. Kdo jsou však čtenáři těchto textů? Zatímco autorů a autorek jsou dnes pod tlakem systému hodnocení a financování výzkumu přehršle, čtenářů, recenzentů a diskutujících je málo a akademická půda se tak stává souborem monologů, případně specializovaných, málo propojených diskusí. and Tereza Stöckelová, Filip Vostal.

This article argues that understanding any space or site relies on a knowledge of its fourth dimension - the timescape. It will explore this by situating the investigation in the museum - a place of heightened contrivance which could easily be shallowly interpreted as "mere style". It will defend a new method of investigating museum temporality which combines both phenomenology and literary theory, and will replace the idea of geo-epistemology with geochronic epistemology: an understanding of context and situation which takes on time as well as spatial location. In so doing, it moves on from notions of the museum as a place out of time, situating it in the networks of meaning, power and politics in which we have lived and are living. Thus, "the whole space of the exhibition" as Lyotard said, "becomes the remains of all time": the Museum on the Edge of Forever., Tento článek pracuje s argumentem, že porozumění jakémukoliv prostoru či místu se odvíjí od znalosti jeho čtvrtého rozměru – krajiny času. Toto tvrzení probádává tak, že zasazuje výzkum do muzea – místa se zvýšenou mírou machinace, již by bylo snadno povrchně interpretovat jako "pouhý styl“. Článek obhajuje novou metodu zkoumání temporality muzea, jež v sobě kombinuje fenomenologii i literární teorii a nahrazuje myšlenku geoepistemologie geochronickou epistemologií: porozuměním kontextu a situaci, jež je umístěno jak v čase, tak v prostoru. Tím, že tak činí, se článek posunuje od pojetí muzea jakožto místa mimo čas a zasazuje jej do sítí významů, moci a politiky, v nichž jsme žili a stále žijeme. Podle knihy Petera Harrisona The Bible, Protestantism and the Rise of Natural Science z  roku 1998 vznikla moderní věda jako výsledek důrazu protestantů na  doslovný smysl Písma, jejich odmítnutí dřívějšího symbolického či alegorického výkladu a  jejich snahy o  fi xaci významu biblického textu, v  němž každá pasáž měla mít jediný a  jedinečný význam. Tento článek se pokouší o  shrnutí nejvýznamnějších kritik Harrisonovy hypotézy (od  Kennetha Howella, Jitse van der Meera a Richarda Oosterhoff a) a  uznává jejich oprávněnost. Nicméně ani alternativní vysvětlení vzestupu moderní vědy jakožto výsledku neshod ve výkladu Písma a následného objevu nejednoznačné povahy běžného verbálního jazyka není zcela uspokojivé., According to Peter Harrison’s book The Bible, Protestantism and the Rise of Natural Science (1998) modern science came into existence as a result of the emphasis of Protestants on the literal sense of the Scripture, their refusal of the earlier symbolic or allegorical interpretation, and their efforts at fixing the meaning of the biblical text in which each passage was to be ascribed a single and unique meaning. This article tries to summarize the most significant critiques of Harrison’s hypothesis (by Kenneth Howell, Jiste van der Meer and Richard Oosterhoff) and to acknowledge their legitimacy. However, the alternative explanation of the emergence of modern science as a result of disputes over the biblical interpretation and the subsequent discovery of the ambiguous character of the ordinary verbal language is not fully satisfactory either., and Petr Pavlas.

Chemické vizualizace a modely jsou zvláštními druhy médií myšlení. Tato studie zkoumá několik historických případových studií – archív obrazů z muzeí, specializovaných sbírek a populárně-vědeckých časopisů – emergentních praktik materiálního modelování coby teoretické hry, jež se staly základem molekulární biologie a strukturní chemie. Sleduji dědictví nástrojů vizualizace počínaje Archibaldem Scottem Cooperem a Friedrichem Kekulé na konci 19. století, jejich vyústění do materiálních manipulativů Van’t Hoffa a užití jeho skládaných papírových "hraček“ Linusem Paulingem i jejich následné pronikání do populární obraznosti díky modelu DNA Jamese Watsona a Francise Cricka. Sleduji dále jejich vliv na současné praktiky modelování a zdůrazňuji, že materiální modely, jež tradičně stály za hranicemi deduktivní, pozitivistické vědy, jsou nyní v těchto oblastech chemie akceptovány jako způsob vědeckého uvažování., Chemical visualizations and models are special kinds of media for thinking. In this paper, I examine several historical case studies-an archive of images from museums, special collections, and popular magazines- as examples of emergent practices of physical modeling as theoretical play which became the basis for molecular biology and structural chemistry. I trace a legacy of visualization tools that starts with Archibald Scott Cooper and Friedrich Kekulé in the late 1800s, crystallizes as material manipulatives in Van’t Hoff and his folded paper “toys”, is legitimized in the California lab of Linus Pauling, and is glorified in the popular imaginary with James Watson and Francis Crick’s model of DNA. My tracing then follows several threads into contemporary modeling practices. I ultimately argue that modeling play, originally outside of the boundary of deductive, positivist science, is now an accepted mode of reasoning in these related chemical fields., and Kate McKinney Maddalena.

Od začátku 21. století roste vědomí, že software je slepou skvrnou teorie nových médií. Vzrůstající zájem o software ovlivnil také tezi předkládaného příspěvku. Vychází z předpokladu, že koncept univerzálního stroje Alana M. Turinga je jedním z mládeneckých strojů (Carrouges). Předchozí texty založené na podobné hypotéze (Daniels, Baudrillard, Turkle, Ascott) se zaměřily buď na srovnání univerzálního stroje a mládeneckého stroje na základějejich strukturálních podobností, nebo užívaly mládenecký stroj jako metaforu člověka nebo počítače (umělé inteligence). Na rozdíl od nich, tento příspěvek zdůrazňuje význam kontextu (imitační hry Turingova testu), který je klíčem k interpretaci univerzálního Turingova stroje jako mládeneckého stroje a potenciálně jako autoportrétu., Since the beginning of the twenty-first century there has been an increasing awareness that software represents a blind spot in new media theory. the growing interest in software also influences the argument in this paper, which sets out from the assumption that Alan M. Turing’s concept of the universal machine, the first theoretical description of a computer program (software), is a kind of bachelor machine (Carrouges). Previous writings based on a similar hypothesis (Daniels, Baudrillard, Turkle, Ascott) have focused either on a comparison of the universal machine and the bachelor machine in terms of the similarities of their structural features, or they have taken the bachelor machine as a metaphor for a man or a computer (artificial intelligence). Unlike them, this paper stresses the importance of the context (the imitation game of the Turing test) as a key to interpreting the universal Turing machine as a bachelor machine and, potentially, as a self-portrait., and Jana Horáková.
