Zájem současné sociologie a  dalších společenských věd o  výzkumy spokojenosti a štěstí zatemňuje skutečnost, že původně právě sociologie chtěla "štěstí“ poskytovat a  nahrazovat tak náboženské přístupy ke světu. Tento implicitně náboženský charakter je patrný i  v  rané české sociologii v  dílech prvních propagátorů sociologie, jako byl především Emanuel Makovička, a později (někdy jen dočasně) u některých následovníků a epigonů T. G. Masaryka, v  meziválečném období zejména u Ladislava Kunteho, R. I. Malého, Alexandra Sommera-Batěka, Jindřicha Fleischnera a  Jana Duška. Z  hlediska vývoje české sociologie šlo o zcela okrajové postavy, ačkoli mnohé z  nich vynikly v jiných oblastech, jako celek jsou nicméně vyjádřením jednoho z  aspektů dobových teoretických úvah o  společnosti, jejím uspořádání a  vývoji, na  který by nemělo být zapomínáno. Zatímco T. G. Masaryka a pozdější akademické sociology "omezoval“ vědecký charakter jejich práce, a i pokud směřovali k  sociálnímu reformismu, oddělovali jej od  teoretické sociologie, "sociologie vedoucí ke štěstí“ nalezla plné uplatnění ve vizích a ambiciózních projektech těchto amatérských takésociologů - třebaže skončily faktickými nezdary nebo ani nedošly praktického naplnění, ostatně stejně jako v  případě jejich pravzoru, Comtova pozitivistického apoštolátu., The engagement of contemporary social sciences in happiness studies blurs the fact that, originally, it was sociology that offered to provide “happiness” with the intention of replacing religious approaches. The implicitly religious nature of the “happiness” movement was characteristic of early Czech sociology (e.g. Emanuel Makovička) and it was adopted by certain followers and epigones of T.  G. Masaryk as late as during the interwar years (Ladislav Kunte, R.  I.  Malý, Alexandr Sommer-Batěk, Jindřich Fleischner and Jan Dušek). Whereas Masaryk himself and academic sociologists as a  whole were “restricted” by the rules of scholarly work, or they made a clear distinction between their academic and social-reformist engagement, the afore-mentioned, predominantly amateur, sociologists fully employed “sociology as a way to happiness” in their ambitious visions and reformist projects. Th eir largely stillborn eff orts had (fortunately) a minimal impact on both society and the study thereof, but their efforts should not be forgotten entirely since they represent an important element of early Czech sociology., and Zdeněk R. 53. Sociology’s rhythms: temporal dimensions of knowledge production

From the temporal perspective, this article examines shifts in the production of sociological knowledge. It identifies two kinds of rhythms of sociology: 1) that of sociological standpoints and techniques of investigation and 2) that of contemporary academic life and culture. The article begins by discussing some of the existing research strategies designed to “chase” high-speed society. Some, predominantly methodological, currents are explored and contrasted with the “slow(er)” instruments of sociological analysis composed of different, yet complementary, modes of inquiry. Against this background, the article stresses that it is through the tension between fast and slow modes of inquiry that sociology reproduces itself. The subsequent part explores the subjective temporal experience in contemporary academia. It is argued that increasing administration and auditing of intellectual work signifi cantly coshapes sociological knowledge production not only by requiring academics to work faster due to an increasing volume of tasks, but also by normalizing time-pressure. The article concludes by considering the problem as to whether the increasing pace of contemporary academic life has detrimental consequences for the more organic reproductive rhythms of sociology., Tento článek zkoumá proměny produkce sociologického vědění, a to z perspektivy temporality (časovosti). Odlišuje dva druhy sociologických rytmů: první souvisí se sociologickými hledisky and technikami zkoumání, druhý potom se současnou podobou akademické kultury. Článek se nejprve zabývá několika existujícími výzkumnými strategiemi určenými ke „stíhání“ vysokorychlostní společnosti. Některé, především metodologické proudy jsou podrobeny diskuzi a  porovnány s „pomalými/pomalejšími“ nástroji sociologické analýzy, sestávajících se z  odlišných, avšak komplementárních způsobů šetření. V  této souvislosti článek zdůrazňuje, že napětí mezi rychlými a  pomalými způsoby šetření tvoří reprodukční předpoklady sociologie. Následující část se zabývá subjektivní časovou zkušeností v  podmínkách soudobého akademického světa. Článek tvrdí, že zvyšující se adp ministrativa a auditování intelektuální práce značně spoluutváří výrobu sociologického vědění; a to nejen proto, že akademičtí pracovníci jsou díky vzrůstajícímu počtu úkolů nuceni pracovat rychleji, ale také kvůli normalizaci časového tlaku. Závěrem je pojednáno o tom, do jaké míry lze tvrdit, že tempo současného akademického života má neblahé důsledky pro organické reprodukční rytmy sociologie., and Filip Vostal.

55. Současné vědecké poznatky o vnímání: voda na mlýn pragmatismu?

Nedávné vědecké poznatky týkající se lidského vnímání a lidského konání naznačují, že nejenom není konání bez vnímání (což není až zase tak překvapivé), ale že není ani vnímání bez konání (což už je mnohem překvapivější). Zcela se mění pohled na to, jak lidé vnímají (nejlépe zdokumentováno je to v případě vidění); a objevují se dokonce i extrémní názory, že vnímání a konání jsou vlastně jednou a toutéž věcí. Podobně se v důsledku zkoumání motivačních struktur stojících v základu tvorby teorií rozmývá ostrou hranici mezi teorií a praxí. Zdá se mi, že tohle všechno je poněkud překvapivá voda na mlýn filosofického pragmatismu., Recent scientific results concerning human perception and human action indicate, that not only there is no action without perception (which would not be so surprising), but also that there is no perception without action (which is much greater surprise). The view of how humans perceive has completely changed (as best documented in the case of vision); and there appear even such extreme views as that perception and action are in fact one and the same thing. Similarly, the research of the motivation structures in the foundation of theory forming erases the sharp boundary between theory and praxis. It seems to me that this is a somewhat surprising grist to the mill of philosophical pragmatism., and Jaroslav Peregrin.

Podle knihy Petera Harrisona The Bible, Protestantism and the Rise of Natural Science z  roku 1998 vznikla moderní věda jako výsledek důrazu protestantů na  doslovný smysl Písma, jejich odmítnutí dřívějšího symbolického či alegorického výkladu a  jejich snahy o  fi xaci významu biblického textu, v  němž každá pasáž měla mít jediný a  jedinečný význam. Tento článek se pokouší o  shrnutí nejvýznamnějších kritik Harrisonovy hypotézy (od  Kennetha Howella, Jitse van der Meera a Richarda Oosterhoff a) a  uznává jejich oprávněnost. Nicméně ani alternativní vysvětlení vzestupu moderní vědy jakožto výsledku neshod ve výkladu Písma a následného objevu nejednoznačné povahy běžného verbálního jazyka není zcela uspokojivé., According to Peter Harrison’s book The Bible, Protestantism and the Rise of Natural Science (1998) modern science came into existence as a result of the emphasis of Protestants on the literal sense of the Scripture, their refusal of the earlier symbolic or allegorical interpretation, and their efforts at fixing the meaning of the biblical text in which each passage was to be ascribed a single and unique meaning. This article tries to summarize the most significant critiques of Harrison’s hypothesis (by Kenneth Howell, Jiste van der Meer and Richard Oosterhoff) and to acknowledge their legitimacy. However, the alternative explanation of the emergence of modern science as a result of disputes over the biblical interpretation and the subsequent discovery of the ambiguous character of the ordinary verbal language is not fully satisfactory either., and Petr Pavlas.

Sleduji dědictví nástrojů vizualizace počínaje Archibaldem Scottem Cooperem a Friedrichem Kekulé na konci 19. století, jejich vyústění do materiálních manipulativů Van’t Hoffa a užití jeho skládaných papírových "hraček“ Linusem Paulingem i jejich následné pronikání do populární obraznosti díky modelu DNA Jamese Watsona a Francise Cricka. Sleduji dále jejich vliv na současné praktiky modelování a zdůrazňuji, že materiální modely, jež tradičně stály za hranicemi deduktivní, pozitivistické vědy, jsou nyní v těchto oblastech chemie akceptovány jako způsob vědeckého uvažování., Chemical visualizations and models are special kinds of media for thinking. In this paper, I examine several historical case studies-an archive of images from museums, special collections, and popular magazines- as examples of emergent practices of physical modeling as theoretical play which became the basis for molecular biology and structural chemistry. I trace a legacy of visualization tools that starts with Archibald Scott Cooper and Friedrich Kekulé in the late 1800s, crystallizes as material manipulatives in Van’t Hoff and his folded paper “toys”, is legitimized in the California lab of Linus Pauling, and is glorified in the popular imaginary with James Watson and Francis Crick’s model of DNA. My tracing then follows several threads into contemporary modeling practices. I ultimately argue that modeling play, originally outside of the boundary of deductive, positivist science, is now an accepted mode of reasoning in these related chemical fields., and Kate McKinney Maddalena.

Od začátku 21. století roste vědomí, že software je slepou skvrnou teorie nových médií. Vzrůstající zájem o software ovlivnil také tezi předkládaného příspěvku. Vychází z předpokladu, že koncept univerzálního stroje Alana M. Turinga je jedním z mládeneckých strojů (Carrouges). Předchozí texty založené na podobné hypotéze (Daniels, Baudrillard, Turkle, Ascott) se zaměřily buď na srovnání univerzálního stroje a mládeneckého stroje na základějejich strukturálních podobností, nebo užívaly mládenecký stroj jako metaforu člověka nebo počítače (umělé inteligence). Na rozdíl od nich, tento příspěvek zdůrazňuje význam kontextu (imitační hry Turingova testu), který je klíčem k interpretaci univerzálního Turingova stroje jako mládeneckého stroje a potenciálně jako autoportrétu., Since the beginning of the twenty-first century there has been an increasing awareness that software represents a blind spot in new media theory. the growing interest in software also influences the argument in this paper, which sets out from the assumption that Alan M. Turing’s concept of the universal machine, the first theoretical description of a computer program (software), is a kind of bachelor machine (Carrouges). Previous writings based on a similar hypothesis (Daniels, Baudrillard, Turkle, Ascott) have focused either on a comparison of the universal machine and the bachelor machine in terms of the similarities of their structural features, or they have taken the bachelor machine as a metaphor for a man or a computer (artificial intelligence). Unlike them, this paper stresses the importance of the context (the imitation game of the Turing test) as a key to interpreting the universal Turing machine as a bachelor machine and, potentially, as a self-portrait., and Jana Horáková.

Článek se zabývá některými důsledky otevřené vědy z perspektivy komunikace vědy a filosofie komunikace. Kromě čistě komunikačních a filosofických témat se text věnuje i otázkám tykajícím se procesu popularizace vědy prostřednictvím sociálních médií (zejména Twitteru a blogů). Článek se sestává ze tří oddílů: první navrhuje definici komunikace vědy a sociálních médií; druhý zkoumá proměnu komunikace vědy v éře internetu a zabývá se vlivem sociálních médií na komunikaci vědy; třetí a závěrečný oddíl přináší několik případových studií a filosofických postřehů. Nejdůležitějším, zde dosaženým závěrem je tvrzení, že sociální media vědu a vědeckou komunikaci proměnila. Twitter a blogy jakožto nové nástroje vědecké komunikace mohou být užitečné a smysluplné pro vědu i společnost. Sociální média mohou být navíc použita k usnadnění širšího zapojení občanů do diskusí o vědě., The aim of the present article is to discuss several consequences of the Open Science from a perspective of science communication and philosophy of communication. Apart from the purely communicative and philosophical issues, the paper deals with the questions that concern the science popularization process through social media (especially Twitter and blogs). The article consists of three sections: the first one suggests a definition of science communication and social media, the second examines the transformation of science in the Age of the Internet and considers the influence of social media on science communication, the third and final one presents some case studies and philosophical observations. The most important conclusion to be reached here is that the social media have changed science and science communication. Twitter and blogs as novelty tools of science communication can be useful and meaningful for both science and society. Furthermore, social media can be used to facilitate broader involvement of citizens in the discussion about science., and Emanuel Kulczycki.
