Dynamic soil properties are important parameters for the design of structures subjected to various dynamic/cyclic loading such as earthquake which can be obtained by in situ and laboratory measurements. Numerous empirical and mathematical models have been proposed to predict the dynamic properties of soils, including maximum shear modulus (Gmax), normalized shear modulus (G/Gmax - γ) curve, reference shear strain (γr), minimum damping ratio (Dmin) and damping ratio (D - γ) curve. However, the majority of the existing models were proposed for specific soil types, loading characteristics, initial soil fabrics and strain ranges. This paper proposes five universal models to estimate the Gmax, γr and Dmin values, and also G/Gmax - γ and D - γ curves using a database that contains 117 tests on 5 different granular soils. The proposed models include the effect of grading characteristics, void ratio, mean effective confining pressure, consolidation stress ratio (KC) and specimen preparation method. The models are validated using experimental data from previous studies for granular soils. The PC is and will remain a basic instrument in the laboratory arsenal in the next few years. The key role of the IBM PC and its clones prompted us to develop a universal multifunctional I/O board (CNIMCJL) for this computer. The board will make it possible to use the IBM PC for a wide range of tasks from a simple interface for laboratory processing of data to complex IBM PC-based instruments, e.g. a stimulator, signal analyzer, chart recorder. The present article summarizes the experience gathered during the design and application of the described I/O board in more than 10 different IBM PC-based laboratory and clinical systems listed in the Appendix. An example of the application of the I/O board is presented in the conclusion of this report together with the discussion of the future role of new Application-Specific Integration Circuits (ASICs) and single chip processors in this domain.
Using sequence alignment, a conserved domain in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of the cytoplasmic heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) of Lepidoptera was found. This region is highly variable in other insect groups. Furthermore, universal primers were designed to amplify the complete coding sequence (CDS) of HSP90 from total genomic DNA in Lepidoptera, avoiding the commonly used reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and 3', 5'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) methods based on cDNA. These primers amplified a fragment of about 2.25 kb in the 11 species tested, which represent seven different families of Lepidoptera, including moths and butterflies. The results suggest that the conserved domain of 3'UTR is universal in Lepidoptera and these primers successfully amplify the complete CDS of cytoplasmic HSP90 from genomic DNA. and Peng Jun XU, Tong LI, Jin Hua XIAO, Robert W. A simple renewal process is a stochastic process {Xn} taking values in {0,1} where the lengths of the runs of 1's between successive zeros are independent and identically distributed. After observing X0,X1,…Xn one would like to estimate the time remaining until the next occurrence of a zero, and the problem of universal estimators is to do so without prior knowledge of the distribution of the process. We give some universal estimates with rates for the expected time to renewal as well as for the conditional distribution of the time to renewal.
Universal Segmentations (UniSegments) is a collection of lexical resources capturing morphological segmentations harmonised into a cross-linguistically consistent annotation scheme for many languages. The annotation scheme consists of simple tab-separated columns that stores a word and its morphological segmentations, including pieces of information about the word and the segmented units, e.g., part-of-speech categories, type of morphs/morphemes etc. The current public version of the collection contains 38 harmonised segmentation datasets covering 30 different languages.
We lift important results about universally typical sets, typically sampled sets, and empirical entropy estimation in the theory of samplings of discrete ergodic information sources from the usual one-dimensional discrete-time setting to a multidimensional lattice setting. We use techniques of packings and coverings with multidimensional windows to construct sequences of multidimensional array sets which in the limit build the generated samples of any ergodic source of entropy rate below an h0 with probability one and whose cardinality grows at most at exponential rate h0.
Milan Otáhal (1928-2017) was a leading historian studying the contemporary history of Czechoslovakia. In the 1960s, he was the head of the Department of Modern History of the Historical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences; in the early 1970s, he lost his job at the institute and was expelled from the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. He was one of the fi rst signatories of Charter 77 and was active in the historical samizdat as an independent historian. Since the 1990s, his scientifi c activity was connected with the newly established Institute for Contemporary History. His main focus was the history of the anti-regime opposition and of the society between 1969 and 1989, and the role of students and intelligentsia in the change of the political situation in the end of the 1980s. He wrote a number of factographically rich and interpretationally distinctive publications on these topics. The harmonic oscillations of water level changes with several hundred nanometers amplitudes and 10-3 [Hz] frequencies are irregularly observed with the water-tube tiltmeter. The effects are observed only by one of four gauges - the one closest to the entrance to underground. The other three gauges of water-tube tiltmeters are situated at the ends of the corridors and are significantly more distant from the entrance to the underground. The atmospheric pressure signals affect level of water in the instrument by inverse barometric effect. The water-tube tiltmeters can register water level variations associated with inverse barometric effects, which were produced by air pressure signals until 10-5 [Pa] magnitude. The amplitude of harmonic oscillations of water level is significantly large and amounts to 1/10 of tidal amplitude, that is 300 to 500 nanometers, which corresponds to 5 x 10-3 [Pa] of air pressure variations. Harmonic oscillations appear irregularly and their time of duration changes from few days until several weeks. The length of atmospheric wave of 10-3 [Hz] frequencies is of 1000 [km] and cannot be explained by any phenomenon from the outside surroundings or the inside of the underground. Resonance frequencies of air column in the hundred meters long underground corridors are of the order of single Hz. Absence of similar signals in measurements from the other three gauges suggests that the harmonic signals are not propagated through the Earth’s solid body but through the atmospheric medium. The observed micro-vibrations of air pressure are very low infrasounds which can be produced in large dimension space of thousand kilometers size. Instances are proffered where it seems Buddhists have been stimulated by Judeo-Christian material. Openness to wisdom emanating from a non-Indian Buddha is documented already in the Mahāyāna, but the majority of these present instances are taken from Theravāda literature. It seems material emanating from Jews was assimilated before the suttas were finalized. If so, "openness" established before being rationalized and lauded in the Mahāyāna.
