- Anacanthorus franciscanus sp. n. and Anacanthorus brevicirrus sp. n. (Dactylogyridae) are described from the gills of the matrinchã, Brycon orthotaenia Günther (Characidae), from the Rio São Francisco in Brazil. Anacanthorus franciscanus most closely resembles Anacanthorus elegans and A. kruidenieri from the matrinchão, Brycon melanopterus, of the Amazon River Basin. It differs from these species in part by having the bulbous proximal end of the hook shank with two translucent regions. Anacanthorus brevicirrus resembles A. franciscanus, A. kruidenieri and A. elegans but is differentiated from these species by its short straight male copulatory organ and by having one translucent region in the bulbous base of the hook shank.

13. Neotropical Monogenoidea. 58. Three new species of Gyrodactylus (Gyrodactylidae) from Scleromystax spp. (Callichthyidae) and the proposal of COII gene as an additional fragment for barcoding gyrodactylids

- Based on molecular markers (COII and ITS1-ITS2) and morphological data, we describe three new Neotropical species of Gyrodactylus von Nordmann, 1832 from Scleromystax barbatus (Quoy et Gaimard) and Scleromystax macropterus (Regan) from southern Brazil. The three new species can be distinguished from each other by sequences of both molecular markers and morphology of hooks and anchors. Gyrodactylus bueni sp. n. is characterised by having hook with shaft curved, heel straight, shelf straight, toe pointed, anchor with superficial root slender, elongate and male copulatory organ armed with two rows of spinelets. Gyrodactylus major sp. n. presents hook with shaft, point curved, proximal shaft straight, heel convex, shelf convex, toe concave, anchor with superficial root robust and male copulatory organ armed with two rows of spinelets. Gyrodactylus scleromystaci sp. n. presents hook with shaft, point recurved, heel convex, shelf convex, toe pointed, anchor with superficial root curved and male copulatory organ armed with two rows of spinelets. These species appear to be closely related to other species of Gyrodactylus known from other species of Callichthyidae. These new species, however, differ by the comparative morphology of the haptoral hard structures and molecular data. Comparative analysis of sequences from these species of Gyrodactylus suggests that the COII gene may represent an important marker for the taxonomy of species of Gyrodactylidae and, perhaps, for species of other lineages of Monogenoidea.

14. New oxyuroid nematodes of the genera Ichthyouris and Spinoxyuris from South American freshwater fishes

- Three hitherto unknown oxyuroid nematode species of the family Pharyngodonidae are described from the intestine of South American freshwater fishes, two of them being established as species new to science: Spinoxyuris annulata sp. n. from Myleus ternetzi (Norman) (Serrasalmidae) from French Guiana (Sinnamary River) and Ichthyouris ovifilamentosa sp. n. from Cichlasoma sp. (Cichlidae) from Amazonas (Negro River, São Gabriel da Cachoeira), Brazil. A third species, recovered from the same host as the latter (Cichlasoma sp.), was identified only as Ichthyouris sp. because of the absence of the male, although it probably also represents a new species. S. annulata differs from the only other congeneric species, S. oxydoras Petter, 1994, mainly in the absence of egg filaments, the location of an unpaired postanal papilla in the male, a distinctly longer spicule, and in an approximately double length of the body. Ichthyouris ovifilamentosa is closest to I. ro Inglis, 1962, differing from it principally in the structure of the cephalic end, the position of the excretory pore, and in the presence of filamented eggs. Ichthyouris sp. females differ from their congeners mainly in a characteristic structure of the cephalic end, the extent of lateral alae and the shape of their posterior ends, and in the character of egg filaments.

15. Paranaelia luquei gen. et sp. n. (Monogenea: Microcotylidae), a new parasite of Brazilian catfìshes

- Paranaella, a new microcotyline monotypie genus, is erected to accommodate Paranaella luquei sp. n., parasite of gill filaments from Hypostomus sp., Hypostomus regani (Ihering) and Rhinelepis aspera Spix et Agassiz (Loricariidae) from the Paraná River, Brazil. The new genus is most closely related to Microcolyle Van Beneden et Hesse, 1863, Diploslamenides Unnithan, 1971 and Solostamenides Unnithan, 1971. From Microcolyle it differs mainly by having the genital atrium formed by a muscular ring with a concentric row of numerous elongate and straight spines; from Diplostamenides it can be distinguished by the unarmed and not differentiated cirrus and from Solostamenides it differs by the single vaginal pore and absence of larval hooks.

- Specimens of the elasmobranch, Isurus oxyrinchus Rafinesque, captured in 1999 in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, were parasitized with the poecilacanthoid trypanorhynch cestode Gymnorhynchus isuri Robinson, 1959, that is redescribed here. New details of scolex and proglottid morphology are given. These details are mainly related to tentacle armature, terminal genitalia and observations of external morphology of proglottids.

17. Systematic status of Manaosia bracodemoca Woodland, 1935 and Paramonticellia itaipuensis Pavanelli et Rego, 1991 (Eucestoda: Proteocephalidea), parasites of Sorubim lima (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from South America

- Type material of the proteocephalidean cestodes Manaosia bracodemoca Woodland, 1935 and Paramonticellia itaipuensis Pavanelli et Rego, 1991 (both monotypic genera) as well as recently collected material of the latter species are redescribed. A close similarity between both species was observed: the shape of scoleces is identical, both possess a globular scolex with hidden suckers, a well-developed circular, horseshoe-shaped musculature surrounding suckers; the measurements of both taxa are also similar (scolex, suckers, young proglottides). Both cestodes possess a medullary ovary crossing the dorsal muscle layer and ending in the dorsal cortex, the testes are in the dorsal cortex and the cortical vitellarium is laterally situated. Both species parasitize the same fish host. Therefore Paramonticellia is considered a junior synonym of Manaosia and Paramonticellia itaipuensis becomes a junior synonym of Manaosia bracodemoca. An emended diagnosis of Manaosia, which is a monotypic genus, is provided.

18. Tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephalidea) of firewood catfish Sorubimichthys planiceps (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the Amazon River

- A survey of proteocephalidean cestodes found in the firewood catfish Sorubimichthys planiceps (Spix et Agassiz) from the Amazon River is provided. The following taxa parasitic in S. planiceps are redescribed on the basis of their type specimens and material collected recently in the Amazon River, near the type localities in Brazil, and in Iquitos, Peru: Monticellia lenha Woodland, 1933; Nomimoscolex lenha (Woodland, 1933) (syn. Proteocephalus lenha Woodland, 1933); and Monticellia megacephala Woodland, 1934, for which a new genus, Lenhataenia, is proposed, with L. megacephala (Woodland, 1934) comb. n. as its type and only species. The new genus is a member of the Monticelliinae, i.e. has all genital organs in the cortex, and is most similar to Chambriella in possessing biloculate suckers and lacking a metascolex. It differs in the morphology of the cirrus-sac that contains a strongly coiled, thick-walled internal sperm duct (vas deferens) and a muscular cirrus of the appearance typical of most proteocephalideans, whereas that of Chambriella is sigmoid, with voluminous, tightly sinuous thick-walled internal sperm duct. In addition, Lenhataenia possesses a well developed internal musculature, whereas the internal musculature of Chambriella is weakly developed, formed by a low number of muscle fibres. The scolex morphology and distribution of microtriches of Peltidocotyle lenha (Woodland, 1933) (syn. Othinoscolex lenha Woodland, 1933 and Othinoscolex myzofer Woodland, 1933), Chambriella sp. and Choanoscolex sp. are described using scanning electron microscopy. The two latter taxa may be new for science and are reported from S. planiceps for the first time .

- Holotype and paratype of Ascocotyle (Phagicola) rara Arruda, Muniz-Pereira et Pinto, 2002, a heterophyid trematode recently described on the basis of two worms collected by Lauro Travassos in 1921 in the intestine of Ixobrychus exilis (Gmelin) from Brazil, were studied. The morphology of the worms revealed their conspecificity with Ascocotyle (Phagicola) angeloi Travassos, 1928 found in the same host. Both the taxa have a similar length (between 600 and 900 µm) and shape of the body (long pyriform), the long intestinal caeca reaching to the ovarian level, a long posterior muscular prolongation of the oral sucker and the prepharynx, transverse uterine loops situated between the ventral sucker and testes, and the gonotyl with more than 20 digitiform pockets. Consequently, A. (P.) rara is proposed as a junior synonym of Ascocotyle (Phagicola) angeloi.

20. Two Camptylonemopsis species (cyanoprokaryotes) from "Mata Atlantica" in coastal Brazil

- Two new species of the genus Camptylonemopsis (Cyanoprokaryota, Cyanobacteria), namely C. epibryos spec. nova and C. sennae spec. nova, are described from the coastal tropical rainy forest “Mata Atlantica” in Brazil (state Săo Paulo). The diacritical features and the taxonomic position of the genus, particularly the comparison with the related genera Coleodesmium, Tolypothrix and Scytonema are discussed. The tabular review of the genus Camptylonemopsis is presented.
