1) Alloxystinae are major secondary parasitoids of aphids, important in both their ecology and pest management. 2) Two radically differing views of alloxystine taxonomy exist in the literature, in one of which the group is very diverse, in the other it consists of a few variable species. 3) We sequenced a variable nuclear gene region (ITS2) for 28 specimens of a morphologically clearly defined group which, in one view belong to a single species and in the other to four species. We find that the four putative species each carry a different unique allele with no intraspecific variation. We show that the probability of the observed distribution of alleles under the assumption of a single interbreeding population is very small and we reject the view that all specimens belong to a single biological species. 4) We discuss the implications of our results for aphid - parasitoid community ecology and the biological control of aphids with parasitoids.
The influence of some pulmonary ventilation alterations (the normal ventilation at rest = control), the hyperventilation (HV) lasting 75 s, the hypoxic-hypercapnic ventilation (HXV) lasting 3 and 6 min) on the instantaneous QRS vectors was investigated in 42 young healthy women (19-24 years old). The magnitude and the direction of instantaneous QRS vectors in the 10th to the 70th ms and in QRS max were constructed from the Frank lead ECG. The significant alterations of the direction (angle) were found in the 30th ms and QRS max at HXV and in the 60th ms at HV. A significant decrease in the magnitude of instantaneous vectors was found in the 10th to 50th ms after 6 min of HXV, in the 30th to 50th ms at 3 min of HXV, in the 40th to 50th ms at HV. These alterations were the most marked in the horizontal plane. We suggest that the alterations of the instantaneous QRS vectors were caused by the influence of the autonomic nervous system or humoral agents, but not by heart position, Brody’s effect or lung hyperinflation.
Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory rheumatic disease characterized by the development of osteoproductive changes in the spine which could possibly result in ankylosis. Treatment with tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) inhibitors has proved to be an important step forward in the treatment of this disease, but for the time being it is not clear whether it favourably influences radiographic progression of the disease. Vascular endothelial growth factor most probably plays a role in the development of osteoproductive changes and recently its predictive influence on radiographic progression has been demonstrated. Bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP-2) participates in the regulation of bone proliferation and its increased serum level has been demonstrated in patients with advanced AS and correlated with the degree of radiographic changes. Aim: The study aims to evaluate the VEGF and BMP-2 levels in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and how these levels relate to the concurrent treatment with TNFα inhibitors. Methods: Sera were evaluated from patients at the Rheumatologic Clinic of the Hradec Králové Faculty Hospital who fulfilled the modified New York Criteria for AS (n = 55). In these patients, the parameters of the activity of the disease (BASDAI = Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index, CRP = C-reactive protein) and the concurrent therapy (TNFα inhibitors, n = 21, vs. non-anti TNFα, n = 34) were recorded. The levels of VEGF and BMP-2 were analyzed using the ELISA method. Results: In patients treated with TNFα inhibitors, a significantly lower VEGF level was found when compared to untreated patients (140.3 (109.4; 262.2) vs. 261 (172.4; 396.6) pg/ml; p = 0.02). No difference was found between BMP-2 levels in both groups (treated vs. untreated patients) (254.8 (2301; 267.3) vs. 261.1 (248.6; 273.5) pg/ml; p = 0.24). A correlation analysis did not reveal any relationship between VEG F and BMP-2 (r = 0.057; p = 0.68). Serum levels of VEGF correlated with serum levels of CRP (r = 0.56; p = 0.00001) and the BASDAI value (r = 0.33; p = 0.015). Conclusion: Significantly lower VEGF levels were found in patients treated with TNFα inhibitors versus the untreated patients. These findings are in harmony with some hitherto published analyses and may give evidence of a favourable effect of TNFα inhibitors on radiographic progression. The aim of this study was to obtain a detailed analysis of the relationship between the finger arterial compliance C [ml/mm Hg] and the arterial transmural pressure Pt [mm Hg]. We constructed a dynamic plethysmograph enabling us to set up a constant pressure Pcss [mm Hg] and a superimposed fast pressure vibration in the finger cuff (equipped with a source of infra-red light and a photoelectric sensor for the measurement of arterial volume). Pcss could be set on the required time interval in steps ranging between 30 and 170 mm Hg, and on sinusoidal pressure oscillation with an amplitude Pca (2 mm Hg) and a frequency f (20, 25, 30, 35, 40 Hz). At the same time continuous blood pressure BP was measured on the adjacent finger (Portapres). We described the volume dependence of a unitary arterial length on the time-varying transmural pressure acting on the arterial wall (externally Pcss+Pca.sin(2πf), internally BP) by a second-order differential equation for volume. This equation was linearized within a small range of selected BP. In the next step, a Fourier transform was applied to obtain the frequency characteristic in analytic form of a complex linear combination of frequency functions. While series of oscillations [Pca, f] were applied for each Pcss, the corresponding response of the plethysmogram was measured. Amplitude spectra were obtained to estimate coefficients of the frequency characteristic by regression analysis. We determined the absolute value: elastance E, and its inverse value: compliance (C=1/E). Then, C=C(Pt) was acquired by applying sequences of oscillations for different Pcss (and thus Pt) by the above-described procedure. Both the Czech and Slovak Republic announced their plans to play an important role in the processof “nuclear renaissance” in Central Europe. However, this process cannot be limited to a mere multiplicationof nuclear facilities, but must be accompanied by strengthening of the legal and regulatory framework. Takingthe potential magnitude of a nuclear incident into regard, strengthening of the existing legal framework forthe nuclear third party liability must play an eminent role in this legislation. This paper deals with the currentliability frameworks in both countries, analysing the implementation of their commitments arising from theVienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage of 1963. Further, it points out major challengesfor the future development in this field, in particular taking the provisions of the Protocol to Amend the ViennaConvention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage of 1997 into regard.
To propose a test to evaluate endothelial function, based on VO 2 on-transition kinetics in sub -anaerobic threshold (AT) constant load exercise, we tested healthy subjects and patients with ischemic -hypertensive cardiopathy by two cardiopulmonary te sts on a cycle ergometer endowed with an electric motor to overcome initial inertia: a pre-test and, after at least 24 h, one 6 min constant load exercise at 90 % AT. We measured net phase 3 VO2-on kinetics and, by phase 2 time constant (τ), valued endothe lial dysfunction. We found shorter τ in repeated tests, shorter time between first and second test, by persisting endothelium -dependent arteriolar vasodilatation and/or several other mechanisms. Reducing load to 80 % and 90 % AT did not produce significant changes in τ of healthy volunteers, while in heart patients an AT load of 70 %, compared to 80 % AT, shortened τ(∆=4.38±1.65s, p=0.013). In heart patients, no correlation was found between NYHA class, ejection fraction (EF), and the two variables derived from incremental cycle cardio - pulmonary exercise, as well as between EF and τ; while NYHA class groups were well correlated w ith τ duration (r=0.92, p=0.0001). Doxazosin and tadalafil also significantly reduced τ. In conclusion, the O2 consumption kinetics during the on transition of constant load exercise below the anaerobic threshold are highly sensitive to endothelial functi on in muscular microcirculation, and constitute a marker for the evaluation of endothelial dysfunction. and D. We apply a traditional method of surface wave tomography as a new approach to investigate the uppermost crust velocities in the Western Bohemia region (Czech Republic). It enables us to look for velocity distribution in a small scale of tens of kilometers. We measure Rayleigh wave group velocity dispersion curves in a period range 0.25 - 2.0 s along paths crossing the region of interest. We use modified multiple-filtering method for frequency-time analysis. We compute 2-D tomography maps of group velocity distribution in the region for eight selected periods using the standard methods and programs described in literature. We discuss the velocity distribution with respect to results of former study by Nehybka and Skácelová (1997). The wing stalk in Diptera is examined, and its structures are re-evaluated and re-interpreted. The non-homology of A2 in Tipulomorpha and "A2" in other Diptera is claimed. Some notes are presented on the higher-level phylogeny of Diptera, especially those concerning Tipulomorpha. The family Trichoceridae is restored among Tipulomorpha, and the Tipulomorpha are re-affirmed as the sister group of the remaining Diptera. The clade Anisopodidae + Culicomorpha + Bibionomorpha is suggested as the sister group of Brachycera.
This work is a contribution to archaeometallurgical studies on the Únětice axes in Poland. The research was initiated by a single find of the Wrocław–Szczytniki flanged axe recovered from the village of Koperniki (Lower Silesia, Poland). The axe was examined in terms of raw–material profile (ED–XRF) as well as its micro-, and macrostructure (OM). The spatial distribution, deposition context, and raw–material profiles of the remaining Únětice axes from Central-Eastern Europe, with a special emphasis put on those recovered from the Polish land, were also juxtaposed throughout this work. It has been established that the axe from Koperniki was cast in standard Sn–bronze alloyed from so-called Eastern Alpine copper, and thus, the axe may be considered as one of the very last Wrocław–Szczytniki specimens emerging in the Odra and Vistula
Basins. Although the casting was intensively plastic-worked out, the axe from Koperniki itself was not used in the past. Hence, the statement that the axe was intended to serve as a prestigious or insignia metal object rather than fulfil utilitarian functions seems reasonable. The obtained conclusions indicate that the single wet–findings of the Wrocław–Szczytniki axes (including the specimen from Koperniki) reflect indeed the aquatic hierophanies of single hoards. Furthermore, having analysed the results of the research performed we can state that the raw–material profile of some Únětice axes presents the chronological sensitivity, and thus, confirms their usability for raw-material dating, especially concerning so-called single finds. and Článek je příspěvkem k archeometalurgickému studiu únětických seker s lištami v Polsku. Výzkum byl iniciován solitérním nálezem sekery s lištami typu Wrocław–Szczytniki učiněným v obci Koperniki (Dolní Slezsko, Polsko). Analýza sekery zahrnovala stanovení jejího prvkového složení (ED-XRF analýza) i posouzení mikro- a makrostruktury (optická mikroskopie). Pozornost byla věnována rovněž prostorové distribuci, nálezovému kontextu a základní materiálové charakterizaci ostatních seker únětické kultury ze středovýchodní Evropy, se zvláštním zřetelem na nálezy z polského území. Bylo prokázáno, že sekera z lokality Koperniki je odlitkem ze standardního cínového bronzu s příměsemi charakteristickými pro tzv. východoalpskou měď. Nález lze proto považovat za jednoho z posledních zástupců seker typu Wrocław–Szczytniki objevujících se v povodí Odry a Visly. Přestože byl odlitek podroben intenzivnímutváření, sama sekera z Kopernik pro práci použita nikdy nebyla. Proto soudíme, že měla sloužit spíše jako symbol prestiže a moci než jako pracovní nástroj. Výsledky výzkumu naznačují, že jednotlivé nálezy seker typu Wrocław–Szczytniki z vodního prostředí (včetně exempláře z lokality Koperniki) skutečně odrážejí hierofanii takového prostředí u jednotlivých depotů. Na základě analýzy výsledků daného průzkumu lze rovněž konstatovat, že základní materiálové charakteristiky některých únětických seker vykazují chronologickou citlivost, což potvrzuje jejich využitelnost pro datování pomocí základní charakterizace materiálu; týká se to především tzv. solitérních nálezů.
